Doubles Advice

Hey, I'm about to enter my first Doubles tournament on Saturday. I'm familiar with Singles and have been to them before, so I know kind of what to expect.

I'm playing in a doubles tourney with a partner who is fairly good Samus but hasn't been to a tournament before. I've searched the forum; while there is plenty of advice on how to manage your first singles tournament, there's little on useful advice for doubles play. Any pointers and general advice?

Also, I want to know what character synergizes best with Samus-- I can play a variety of characters, but I'm best with Marth and Falco.

The best advice I can give is to not play singles in doubles. Remember that you have a partner there and to attack with him. It's ok to do separate 1v1's, but don't forget to save your partner if you see them being combo'd. Team attack will be on, keep that in mind.

With team attack on there are several advantages such as you can save them with an up air should they not be able to recover, you can jab a jiggs out of her rest if she is on your team, etc.

I'm not too familiar with who works well with Samus but both Marth and Falco are good choices. I would personally use Falco because if you are careful with his lazers (and don't hit your partner) they can annoy the opponent your friend is facing while not hindering you from attacking your opponent.

Good teamwork takes a LOT of practice

hope this helps a little

Watch your partner whenever you can. Don't do long combos because the other teammate can hit you out of it, unless your partner has that under wraps. Sometimes its better to hit a guy away from the stage and start double teaming his partner. When your partner is being edgeguarded and can't possibly make it back, it's probably in your best interests to stop the edgeguard. Similarly, if your partner is edgeguarding and has it under control, buy time for him by keeping the other guy away by grabbing the other person or something. Some obvious things in teams that aren't obvious in singles.. Also, isn't this the wrong section to be posting in?

if you are significantly better than your oppoennet, try to turn it into 2 1v1s as much as possible.

if you're not, help your partner a lot, break you're opponents combo's vs him when you can and call for help when oyu need it. and finish each others combos too

Some people say that in doubles it is more important to keep your stocks then it is to get rid of your opponents. Translate as you will.
I would agree with this... not dying is really annoying for your opponents.

what character synergizes best with Samus
Given that it's your first doubles tourney, try Shiek. She'll be a better overall doubles teammate with a Samus and is much better and simpler in doubles (don't have to play super safe from your opponent like marth or safe with set ups and combos like Falco)

Just give that a try if you tamper with her at all.

Burst damage and kill moves benefits you as you can hit the opponent away then go help Samus. Samus is slow so the battle 1v1 with her will be spacy and steady (if your teammate and opponent are at all competant players lol)

Shiek also has great edge game and can hold people back as Samus takes a while to recover. Samus can stock tank for you and won't get in much trouble aside from edge game. Shieks 'in the middle of battle' game is great with gtfo fast and hard hitting moves which samus lacks too.

Save Samus when she's on the edge

Use your burst power to fight both players at once

Don't get gimped

lovage's doubles advice

don't waste your time trying to do crazy team combos, let your partner do his own thing, and if he can't cover something, be there. example: he throws and the opponent techs into you, your partner is too slow to get there, usmash the dude who rolled into you, then get back to your own stuff. the more experience you have with each other, the more you can team combo safely without hitting each other or risking either of your lives.

when your partner is recovering, don't jump out there to hit him after his up+b, this is sometimes the only choice you have, but 80% of the time it will only get both of you killed. let your partner DI and recover to the best of his ability, and PROTECT the edge. you can protect the edge simply by standing there in your shield while your partner recovers. sure you might get shield pressured or hit, but if your partner survives, mission accomplished

i could write lots of stuff about doubles, but those are two of the most important things
