All I really hear about on the forums are the very technical methods of playing the game including short hops, teching, L-cancelling, etc. etc. I'm wondering, does anyone simply just play without thinking too hard about it...? I'm hoping that most people on WiFi do.

Everyone here PLAYS the game, just not in the casual way you do.

People have to remember that this site is the #1 resource for competitive Smash players looking to improve their game. All types of players are welcome, but it's something to keep in mind.

About online, expect for the first couple weeks to be friendly, but just like Mario Kart DS people will start getting cutthroat. Be prepared, that's just the way online gaming is.

Are you aware that you are posting on a competitive centric forum? Do not worry the competitive players are the minority when compared to that of so called "casual" players. You should be able to find people "playing just for fun" very easily.

Sigh, another idiot who expects enjoyment to come from a lack of thought. How can you play the game and not think? When you're knocked off and need to recover, do you decide that the thought to determine your direction is too tedious? Do you merely recover away from the stage because you're too lazy to consider that fighting will possibly give you more than merely fleeing? Are you ruled by instinct, yet satisfied to live in a mire of incompetence? Truly, your existence is worthless.

Learn to play with purpose or don't play at all. Though, amusingly enough, if you "play" even though you put no thought into it, you're not really playing. And you will be beaten by anyone who can put thought into the game.

Essentially: EPIC FAILURE.

Multiple people play the game without thinking to hard about it you just don't hear about those people because they don't care enough to get pro. Most people on WiFi probably will be moderate players.

I'm sure there are people who play this came without advanced tactics because frankly anyone can play brawl the way they want. But some people here use those advanced tactics to add depth and possibilities to their methods of playing

Most people just PLAY the game. Thats why there not very good.
If you dont want to be good at the game, dont post here and dont read any of the information
that makes you good at the game.

Sure alot of people JUST play sports, like Baseball, basketball, Football, but pros use advanced tecniques and plays to make them better. They even have coaches :O

So its your choice you can just leave the game now and never know what its like to be good at it.
Or you can contienue posting here and actually learn how the play with the best.

I don't bother with Advanced Techniques much. Sure, occasionally I may try a Wavedash or L-Cancel every once in a while, but mostly I just play for fun.

And I take offense at your post, Jazriel. D:

You know, like it or not, games are meant to be won. Yes, you're supposed to have fun leading up to it, but it's the winning, the beating of a level, that's the point.

Pros DO play the game, just in a different way, far more unique than simple button mashing and special spamming casuals seem to employ.

I understand where you're coming from, I suppose, and on some level I agree. The way you went about stating your opinion was foolish, though.

To some people, all that techinical stuff is what makes the game fun. I know it does for me. So when I'm "just playing" the game, I'm still wavedashing and SHFFL'ing.

People will have different styles of play, and enjoy playing different ways. With that said, you can't really say "just playing" is when you play with the advanced techs because MANY people are going to disagree.

lol, then don't try and be competitive. there are plenty of people who play without using advanced techniques in all games, including this. they just get stomped by and mad at people who use the advanced techniques and are better than they are. just keep playing casually and come up with excuses as to why you lose or lost to competitive players. it seems to be the trend now a days...

lol I just play the game.
I might be doing stuff that is really technical but that's because I've played the game for a long time. I don't give a **** about the names of the moves and whatnot. I just have fun.
I don't even give much attention to Online battles and international tournaments.
I just have a lot of fun with my friend.
lol we still laugh to tears with melee!!

Aren't we competitive. You've never had fun losing?

Even IF you're playing in a tournament, you're opponent can pull of a really slick maneuver or mindgame, and you can be impressed, lose, and STILL have fun. As long as it FEELS like you were thoroughly beaten (and you didn't lose because of suicides or somethin') losing is almost as fun to me as winning.

Also i'd rather lose because my opponent pulled something god-like off, than win because my opponent suicided.

--------------------------------

Long story short: if you've never had fun losing, I feel bad for you. You probably don't enjoy the game as much as the rest of us do.

I guess you've never won 400+ dollars from a tournament have you? Until you have done so, don't say "losing is almost as fun to me as winning" because you really dont know what winning is like. And yes, I have fun losing occasionally... but only in friendly matches were the outcome isnt important, losing in a tourney, however, is ****ty no matter what way you look at it. You play in tournaments to win, not lose.

I'm a player, just a player, who loves the game. I've always thought that techniques and all that tounement mentality of "play to win or else" distracts from the fun of the game and the challenge of the fight. I'm one of those people who are overjoyed when I get someone who can play against me, and the playing is where I get all the fun and enjoyment.

Losing is great, it means that you can learn from your mistakes, and plus, it's not about winning or losing, it's about the game, and about the fight and the challenge. If all you care about is winning and losing, you're not caring about the game, you're just trying to be a winner (not to say that everyone who uses techniques only cares about winning).

All in all, any time you can lose, shake your opponents hand (or give him/her a pound) and say, and truly mean, "Man, that was a great match,"you had a good time. Case Closed.

Plenty of people play the game just like you do, and you knew that already. Why make a thread about it?

Oh yes, techniques take away from the challenge of the fight.

Not really techniques per-se, for they can be used and still be used in the sake of a challenging, well played game. It's the mentality that usually comes with the techniques, the do-or-die mentality where one only cares about winning or showing off, and not the game, and usually ends up taking away from the fight itself (that's actually the reason I stopped playing Guilty Gear all those years ago, I rarely ever found anyone who actually wanted to play, most people just chose Dizzy and kept doing those 1-Hit KO moves over and over again), either because the player is not fun to play against (IE, he's a jerk), or the player exploits so much that the game becomes solely about fighting fire with fire, and not about actually playing.

What I'm saying is, techniques don't take away from the game, players who only care about winning, and thus over-technique the fight into a dullness do.

Depends on how low thinking you are speaking about. I don't L-Cancel, WD and/or Shffl, but I do however try to think strategically when combating my opponent and I study the individual moves of each character. (Despite this, I'm still considered casual)

I do, and so does everyone else that has turned on their Gamecube to PLAY Melee. You can't stop thinking while you're playing, anyways. Everyone has a different way to play Melee. The competitive community's just more technical and more mindgame-oriented, which is what I like.

I've been on the fence about how I feel on adv. techs and how much to use them. I play tournaments and do really well without spamming WD like the national ranked samus that plays with us. I get bored of it after a while, it's like it's not a fight between young link and samus.... it's a tech spam fight, and unless I switch my style up and go all ming games on him, whoever does the better spamming gets the kill. I'd rather just pit the characters against eachother, instead of the universal set of techs people pit against eachother.

Losing can be alot of fun, if you didn't enjoy jus tplaying the game even though you lost, you're already looking at the game wrong. Seriously, there are a few people at our tournament that trash talk while playing effing peach. That's not the kind of mind set the game should come with. That's why I stopped playing CS1.6 in cal, there was no friends ship there. There wasn't any "Oh, I won't be an *** and AWP spam, I'll use scout instead" it was "Okay, shoot through this wall to kill the bomber then camp it and one hit kill anyone who touches it". It's fun to win like that the first few times, but really it just gets lame.

Yep, everyone who plays with technical tricks is constantly thinking. The game isn't fun for them, it's just like homework. Instead of using muscle reactions and playing with a character they enjoy playing with, they're just thinking; Smash Bros is work.

I do I'm an average player and a frantic button masher it wins me games with out much thought. The only bad thing is I don't really know how to redo things I've done.
