Do you think this game will lag as bad as brawl did online?

It'll be much better, trust me. Many years have passed since Brawl came out. The Wii U and 3DS are much more capable than the Wii were. Sakurai has also by admission in the Direct, realized the problems online Brawl had.
Also if you've ever played Tekken, Namco KNOWS how to make Online Play like Local Play. Exactly...

Probably will have some lag, but nowhere near as bad. Nintendo still using friend codes, obviously their system can't be that technology good.

Namco will make it better but they are still working with Nintendo's online system, designed by Nintendo, not Namco. Tekken works well partly because Sony knows how to make a good online interface.

Just not convined the technology is good enough to eliminate lag when it isn't even good enough to let you just search your friends gamertag instead of inputting a 5000 digit number like it's still1993.

LOL you're so right at many things, i understand your rage and i'm mad at Nintendo too, Nintendo is crap without their games, hardware sucks. Also, everything about them sucks, but their games. Namco knows the best about the online, i'm sure they'll just try to do their best, noone expects Nintendo to make a lag-free gameplay experience (that is like as impossible as teleporting for Nintendo), but at least it'll be much better than Brawl, am i wrong?

Eh, I don't worry. Namco's on board here. They know what they're doing.
Besides I hear the recent Mario Kart patch improved online stability, so there's no doubt that they'll patch Smash online if they need to.

It's no doubt going to be better than the atrocious multiplayer which accompanied Brawl, but I'm not 100% sure it'll be a completely lag-free experience, which IMO it should be. I still find it really weird how Brawl's multiplayer turned out as bad as it did, while Mario Kart (6) Wii already worked fine. Pretty sure knowledge like that gets shared throughout the company.

I do think the Wii-U version will be better, since [with the Wii-adapter] it's possible to get a wired connection, whereas 3DS players will always be on [slower] wireless connection.

With a game like Smash, there is so much going on when it comes to input it's ridiculous. Not MvC3 ridiculous, but still. Add on the fact that we have it on a 3DS System. It takes a hit.

It only lags if you have a bad connection and the others don't. I know you guys in America don't have the speed we have in Sweden so... I'm not worried unless I play with people outside of Sweden and Japan and other places with fast internet. I ordered the Wii LAN adapter and I have 100mbit/s so I gotta be fine. And also like people have said, the consoles and games are newer.

I have it in good faith that the 3DS online will be good, after hearing about the horrible experience with Brawl online. I'm sure Nintendo learned from their mistakes.

Um i live in Italy and i have fast internet, being cocky about a country is not good, even if it's the one you're living in. It's childish, and also the way you think about American internet, and the way you express your thoughts about it, could offend some people. You should be careful about these kind of things, if you ever find time to think about these from playing super fast online games with holy Swedish internet which America lacks obviously.

I'm American, and I don't find this offensive. In fact I think most Americans would agree about how terrible our Internet services are. Our online speeds are atrocious. Fiber optic Internet is available in some parts of the country, but crappy cable companies tend to control the Internet in most of the country, including where I live. And yeah, they're the absolute worst.

But anyway, on-topic, I'm always fearful about the online capabilities of a Nintendo game. Ever since Brawl completely botched it, I guess I've been a cynic. But MK7 and MK8 run excellently, so I'm hoping Sakurai can pull off a more functional online experience in 3DS/Wii U. Having Namco help out doesn't hurt, either.

You don't find this offensive but he can't just act like that. He can even be right but he doesn't have the rights to talk about other countries, like this. You may think like him, but he doesn't know. He didn't mean it like you did, he was just saying it without a knowledge, no second thought. I couldn't tell how i feel exactly, but sorry for defending you.

Hahahahaha. XD I'm sorry... ehum... haha.

Yes, I don't know what the internet situation is in EVERY country.

I'm not cocky about my own country, I'm not a patriot and I don't love my country. I don't care much about my country but I know it's a good country and has done some awesome things.

I can say whatever I want as long as it's not outlandish and I know that the Internet in America is often bad and they're behind in the possible speed they can get, that's just a fact.

If anyone is offended by me saying "your country's internet is ****" then they need to get their head checked. Often Americans get offended for no reason so I know it could happen, but I don't care cause it's stupid.

You're over reacting and I think you're silly. XD

Hey, I do appreciate you trying to defend other countries, but I don't think he was lambasting other countries or the people in them. He was just talking about the Internet here, and how it sucks in comparison to many other countries. And it does. I was only saying that most Americans probably share his sentiment about the Internet.

Yep, one of those awesome things done by your country is probably losing against Finland at 2011 Hockey World Cup. Using Facebook on your American phones(they have better fashion than you) and thinking you're good at technology and etc. Good. Having a language more annoying than Norwegians is also a plus. I'm happy for you Swedish Otaku.

It probably will. I didn't even notice Brawl's apparent lag, so I don't really care.
EDIT: I meant will not. :p

The online will be good. If you played Kid Icarus online, then you know it had no lag. It was so smooth

What the **** are you on about? I told you I don't care about my country and I don't even know half the stuff you're talking about. Stop going off topic.

If any Ness players here wanna play some online with me when the game is out, be sure to send me a message or contact me any other way. Really wanna play against some Ness players.

Someone's gotta create a thread for online play and then we can see and discuss people's experience with the online play.

It will not be as bad as Brawl's online. Will it be perfect?...I don't think so. It probably will have some moments where it lags but it won't be atrocious.

Besides, patches are a thing, so they can easily fix something if the online is really horrendous.

On a personal note, I do hope it is good. I'm going to be playing against my fellow smash board member so it needs be amazing. <3

It has a 1v1 no items variant, so it's already better than Brawl's in my opinion. Even if it still lags. But now they can actually fix those kinds of problems, so I'm not too concerned.

I wonder how it'll work for cross-continental play; i.e. you want to face someone in Europe and you're in North America or something. Someone who knows a bit more about networking should chime in and tell us.
I am worried about this. I live at the end of the world and I really want to play with the people here on smashboards.

I know about networking, it won't change much. Usually distance doesn't effect gameplay more than internet connection quality. If your internet is good, and if game serves you a good service for that, you won't have lag anywhere in the world. Online play actually depends on a super simple technique. It's called (i don't know how it is called in English exactly, but i'll try to translate) rapid socket data action. It just sends the other user about your pushed button codes (for example for every A button you push, it sends the other player the data of it, then the game takes it and pushes A for you there, you and the other player never share the same screen, you only send each other button data simultaneously.) , when one of those data codes miss, the game freezes until it gets the code, this is called "lag", to prevent lag, you both need to have a seamless connection, or if nintendo is skilled enough, they can make those codes too very little so even with the slowest connection, it won't be a problem. It's kinda complicated, that's why there's a school for it, which i'm going to. Hope it helped ^^

How is local multiplayer on 3DS in the demo ? It doesn't seems to lag from what I've seen but It's hard to tell without playing. Any return on this ?

After Brawl´s online fiasco.... im really not sure if it can improved.

Maybe theres so much going on in smash that it cannot be coded to work at the proper speed?.
In brawl, i played with pals who were like just a kilometer away...and the input lag was super annoying to the point you had to refrain urself from doing certain things.

And playing with peeps from smashboards from USa and so on....was simply unplayable. It was such a turn off.

The worst that I was forced to play with friends on my list... because the queue to play with random people was infiite after 2 months or so.

More than likely, it's sure to be better than Brawl. How much? I'm not sure, but definitely less lag than what Brawl was struggling with. Man, all I remember is the turtle speed if anyone 1/8th had lag. Now that was a nightmare to play with.
