Do you think this game will lag as bad as brawl did online?

One of my biggest worries about this game is that it'll lag online. I've been an online warrior for many years now mainly because I don't know very many people in person. so unfortunately I'll likely be forced to play Sm4sh online as I did with brawl. I played a ton of brawl online and always got frustrated when I came across someone with a terrible connection. (Sometimes there were some incredibly good connections but they were a tad rare.)
My question is, as the title of the thread states, Do you guys think playing this game online will be as awful as it was in brawl?

Im pretty nervous too. I moved away from all my buddies so its pretty important to me that it works.

By now nintendo has to have figured it out, especially with network connection being so integral to the wii u firmware.

First of all, no.
Second of all, no.

Do you even realize what kind of godly powers Namco posseses when it comes to online play?

This is something that has constantly been on my mind too, and I'm really hoping that Nintendo will get it better this time around and know just how much online Smash Bros means to people, especially being able to play it well. Stuff like Mario Kart (Both Wii and 7) have beautiful online play, so I'd like something so seamless and smooth to be there for Smash Bros as well.

You know, your right! I forgot that Namco was even a part of this!
I mean even soul calibur was a tad laggy online at some points so my worry still remains.

No worries, I have complete faith that Smash 3DS's online will run smoothly enough.

Kid Icarus's online was amazing, that's with up to 6 players and there's 3D maneuvering, areas, etc.

Considering they had the problem with Brawl, I highly doubt they're going to make the same mistake. Could easily kill sales of both versions. Especially the Wii U one which won't have come out yet.

We have Nintendo Network on top of Namco handling the server stuff. I'm quite confident we'll have smoother gameplay this time.

I agree with this. There's no need to worry.
Nintendo Network is better than the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which is what Brawl used to play online. I'm pretty sure the online will be great in Smash 3DS.

Nein, I think the online play will work just fine. And they have the potential to improve the online infrastructure post release this time.

Do you guys think that IF The game is a bit laggy online that they will possibly try to patch it or something to possibly make it run more smoothly?

Yes. Patches are a thing now. If players have issues with the online, Nintendo will fix them. Then, once it's fixed, we can all play online with no problems.

I hope not, it seems like the Nintendo Network is quite a bit better than Nintendo WFC.

That said, we'll have to wait and see.

There are plenty of 3DS and Wii U games you can go try online right now to make yourself feel better.

Playing friends I know in America on Mario Kart (I live in Japan) has been extremely foretelling in a positive way about the online capabilities of the 3ds and Wii u, I'm not worried in the slightest.

Sakurai and Nintendo know this is the main priority. They will get it right.

Mario Kart Wii also used NWC and ran smooth, but Brawl didn't. So... NWC worked, as crappy as it was. With that in-mind, that makes me a bit worried. As I said, though, the infastructure is completely reworked and they know they can't afford to mess it up.

There is some doubt that it will not run smooth. And that is at launch when the servers get hammered in hard. That I'll forgive.

If it runs smooth the night I get it.........................MY GAWD.

I don't know about the online.... if you're expecting anything close to local multiplayer i can assure you that you will be disappointed. Fighting games are the hardest games to get right when playing online, because even slight amounts of delay are VERY noticeable. You can't compare that with mario kart at all really... I'm hoping it will be good enough for "for fun" matches but when playing "for glory" I'm expecting to have some moments where i will feel greatly hindered by the lag... Best case scenario for me would be if there is very little noticeable delay when playing with people from the same continent that you live in. i wouldn't mind if nintendo restricted you to only playing people from the same continent for that exact reason (or maybe let you choose between "regional" and "worldwide"). Thats what I'm hoping for really.

Bamco is about as good as they come in terms of netcode. I think we'll get about as good online play as possible for a fighting game on the Wii U. It'll be an upgrade over Brawl at least. I do expect patches to improve online, since we also got that with MK8. It'll at least be generally playable, though it might not be enough for high-level competitive play, since only a few frames of lag can make a big difference in such an environment. It'll actually probably be better in terms of lag in For Glory because it's only one-on-one as opposed to having to deal with 4 connections.

I'm confident that the game won't lag too much, at least not to the point of being unplayable. Of course, like Sakurai said in the Direct, having a good connection yourself is important.

Well, i cant really say much since i have no idea, but i THINK it CANT be as bad as brawl, it just cant. New technology, more time to improve it, having experience, etc is more than enough to at least improve it.

Im not expecting a smooth experience tho, just a "playable"version but not being a viable for competitive gaming ala sf4 .

Hopefully ill be wrong.

It will be better if you have better internet connection obviously. So, it will be smooth overall unless your internet is terrible.

I would think it would be a lot better; there was some interview with Sakurai where he said stuff about wanting to improve it an an article from a year ago, and from what everyone has said about KI:U, which Sakurai directly worked on, we can expect to see the same results. Mario Kart 8 is a more recent example of good online from Nintendo, it usually doesn't have too many issues and Nintendo is going to fix little things in the next couple updates as well. So hopefully it will be nice!1

I wonder how it'll work for cross-continental play; i.e. you want to face someone in Europe and you're in North America or something. Someone who knows a bit more about networking should chime in and tell us.

still, no random items (including pokemon and assist trophies) and no stage hazards
... I don't know how pointing out the obvious relates to the topic at hand.

Either way, I expect some serious shock and backlash if the online is anything remotely like Brawl's. I don't anticipate failure, though.

Remember how "revolutionary" Sakurai thought it was that if someone dropped then a CPU would take over their character? That was funny! I have faith in the game's online - especially the 3DS version (less information to communicate, if my understanding of online play is accurate). I also think online is a lot more important for the 3DS version because of the lack of a major local mode.

there's a lot less to process on the screen at once in For Glory than With Anyone... so For Glory will probably be somewhat smoother than With Anyone.

the original post in the conversation mentioned that because For Glory is only 2 players it should be easier to handle than For Fun,
then somebody responded and said that For Glory can still be 4 players,
so i responded by saying there is still less to process at once than For Fun.

I'm personally still skeptical despite knowing the good points of a hopefully smoother online. I'm more worried about the 3DS version and I guess it's because it doesn't have a broadband adapter like the Wii/Wii U does that Sakurai suggested in the Direct. Yes, Mario Kart 7 has had some of the smoothest wireless online play I seen in the series and surprisingly, MK8 seems to be A BIT laggier from my experiences(other racers rubberbanding more often), but I'm still skeptical.

In my own bias, and even though I am getting both versions, I want the 3DS online to work better - come on, online gaming on the go/toilet!

The Japanese release and Japanese player input may not help as well, I can't recall a time when Japan altogether has internet issues.

No. Brawl come around when Nintendo was still new to the whole Online Gaming thing. Now that Nintendo has had practice with more games under their belt Super Smash Brothers 4 should be tons more better online with less hiccups.

Things have come a long way since 2008 and the Wii had awful online for it's time anyway. We have Namco Bandai on board now, and they have had a lot of experience developing games for online play on multiple consoles over the years. On top of that, the Wii U and 3DS are far better designed and better capable of online gaming. I did not lag once playing MK8, and Animal Crossing New Leaf ran without a hitch for me. So I have no doubts at all.

what do you mean less info to communicate? online play is all about little bytes that is being sent in miliseconds, it's like sending buttons you push, very simultaneously, not the images. So 3DS and Wii U is the same. Wii U could even be better in terms of transfer speed

I think the 3DS version will have worse online than the Wii U version, but I doubt it'll be worse than Brawl.

It'll be much better, trust me. Many years have passed since Brawl came out. The Wii U and 3DS are much more capable than the Wii were. Sakurai has also by admission in the Direct, realized the problems online Brawl had.
