Do you think Smash Ultimate would get the Slippi or Project M treatment?

In my opinion, yes but it may take a while. There already has been skin mods for Ultimate and one close to project M only on mechanics. I think if someone maybe had really good experience and whatnot. We could reach something similar to Slippi or Project M to make Ultimate more amazing than the core game.

Project M was a once in a life time kind of deal and Nintendo today will do everything it can to prevent something like that happening again. There was already an attempt at a Melee styled mod for Ultimate (Project NX, as it was called) and Nintendo issued a C&D for it.

I know about that. Project NX was cancelled. From what I heard, they were making money, but I'm not sure. I'm actually surprised Slippi is still up considering Nintendo's harsh treatment on fan stuff. Maybe Ultimate has to be fully finished in order for stuff like this to happen since Nintendo after that never focuses on that specific smash game. It happened with Brawl and 4, it's gonna happen with Ultimate. Some downloadable mods (Like those on GameBanana) were carefully made to avoid Nintendo's wrath though. Maybe mostly because it was used privately.

I think it would depend on a number of factors.
For one, it would have to be made by passionate-enough fans that want to see it to the end. If it's not then it won't get finished. Look at the dozens of Sonic fangames that get cancelled after they release a one-level-long demo.
Second, it can't make money or else it gets taken down. Sega is generous enough to leave up Patreon pages with optional donations, but Nintendo isn't as generous. So no money, donations or not, can be made off of this.
Third, it needs to be able to work after updates of the game are downloaded. So if a new DLC character comes out and I download them while I have a PM style mod on my Switch, the PM style mod should still work. If this can't happen we would have to wait until the game stops getting updates-which would at least be two full years from now.
Fourth and finally, let's make sure it doesn't take over all tournaments. Until Ultimate becomes forgotten by Nintendo, we should keep it as a side event, because the more traction it gains, the more Nintendo would want to take it down.
There's a lot more that would need to happen obviously. But if the stars align, we could see a Project Ultimate of sorts come to fruition. I wouldn't use it since I've become so accustomed to vanilla Ultimate and the imperfections like the buffer system don't bother me as much as others. But I would be happy for people who really want it and may even try it out myself.

I mean, in 2011 Nintendo didn't care much about Brawl and Sakurai answered to like a few questions. There was one response in 2013 related to Brawl, when 4 was being developed. People were huged on Project M when Brawl was somehow all over. Maybe around 2023 it would happen. Keeping it as a traction is a good recommendation. Or doing a good tournament plan like with Project M. Or as a very rare tertiary, Nintendo stops being sensitive and harsh to fangames cause there are MANY fangames with effort that they confused with those who take no effort.
