When that rumor came around saying that Sonic and Tails were secret characters in Melee?
You had to kill over 20 cpus in cruel mode. I just remembered me trying to do it, and when I finally did it, it shattered my dreams. I kinda knew it wasn't true since the sonic is sega, but that was when the whole sega joinin nintendo thing was being said in the magazines.

EGM-- a gaming magazine-- made an excellent photoshopped image of Sonic and Tails next to Pichu and Roy.

They added the picture and the 'how to unlock them' article in their April magazine-- as an April fools joke.
