“Looks bright enough for you to dive now. Another action-packed day ahead. Good Luck!”
- Katherine Sunday
Come take a dive and join the list of supporters for the Endless Ocean to join. What, you don’t know what this franchise is? Well, I wouldn’t expect you to, being a highly underrated franchise, the entirety Endless Ocean franchise has been forgotten and left as a relic of an era many hope to not return to. While Endless Ocean may be from the era of ‘casual Nintendo’ that by no means should damage the two games’ reputations as superb titles that most missed out on.
What Is An Endless Ocean
Endless Ocean was a franchise developed by Arika studios for the Nintendo Wii. After developing two, not so loved titles for Playstation 2 with the Everblue franchise, they went to make a game in a similar vein to Everblue, and got Nintendo as a publisher. The scores from Endless Ocean were decent going from the 4.5/10 of Everblue to a respectable 7.5/10 on most reviews, with the sequel kickin up that score to an 8/10.
Endless Ocean was released on August 2, 2007 in Japan, November 9, 2007 in Europe, and January 21, 2008 in North America. The game would go on to make about 1.06m sales worldwide according to VGChartz
Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep, commonly referred to as Endless Ocean: Blue World in the U.S. was released on September 17, 2009 in Japan, February 5, 2010 in Europe, and February 22, 2010 in North America. The game would go on to make about 0.87m sales worldwide according to VGChartz.
The genre for both titles is Adventure, and they both premiered on the Wii as the origin console.
Nintendo recently trademarked the name of Endless Ocean in Japan, so clearly the company still cares about their hidden Wii gems.

The gameplay of the title uses the base of the Everblue titles, but instead of just a first person perspective, there is now the inclusion of a 3rd person perspective as well. The game has you play as your own avatar as you join a diving company. In the titles you will explore the ocean looking at various creatures along the way, rub a creator and you’ll get a brief description of what the animal is, including some mating habits, along with food preferences. You will need to spend time with each creature as you get information in chunks. Other features of the title include building your own aquarium and training dolphins, orcas, and belugas to do tricks. The games are very open, allowing the player to do what they want to do, and explore until their hearts are content.
Blue World kicks things up a notch by including more missions and a story in addition to the very open-ended gameplay. While the first did have missions like taking tourists diving, the sequel has story based missions where you and a group of divers try to find lost treasure in your adventure. Also added to the gameplay would now be attacks from predators, such as sharks, so you need to use your new pulsar to fend them off. The game also streamlined the petting mechanic, giving you all the information after one pet, instead of the three different info bowes you needed to spend tons of time to complete in Endless Ocean.

Endless Ocean: Blue World
The Plot Takes Shape
The franchise has always been pretty weak on plot, choosing to just say go instead of hold you back, but since many don’t know a thing about the franchise I think the plots are worth talking about.
Endless Ocean - The plot is as basic as it gets, you’re a diver working under Katherine Sunday, now go dive. The story progresses later on with Katherine talking about how her father left to find the White Mother, a new species of whale, and never came back. You and Katherine will then go to find the whale.
Endless Ocean 2 - You are a diver once again, but are now working for Jean Eric and R7R Diving Services. You and Jean’s granddaughter go diving together, and come across a lost humpback calf and reunite it with the mother. Oceane’s pendant drops causing a high pitched noise that provokes the whale into charging. Oceane becomes curious of her pendant ad finds another piece, seeing now that it reads out a verse of the poem, “The Song of Dragons.” The pendant is then shown to contain a map to find the Pacifica treasure. The group goes to find the treasure, but Jean seems unsure about going due to a rough past.
Endless Ocean’s History With Smash
Surprisingly, Endless Ocean has no history with the Super Smash Bros. series. Its representation being none is strange as the games were well liked and sold decently, if it getting a sequel is any indicator. The series has not had any representation, so now mighty be a good time to change that.
The only history Endless Ocean has with Smash is that there were rumors of an Endless Ocean stage in Smash Wii U, so maybe that dream can finally be realized.
Why Endless Ocean Should Have Representation
Now that I’ve already established what Endless Ocean is, why should it have representation? I believe the series should be represented as it is a Nintendo franchise that is lacking any representation at all, so to complete the full Nintendo history that is present in Smash the series should be included. Endless Ocean is also different from the rest, being a realistic, open world exploration, and educational game; a combination that is rare to see made by Nintendo, or even see in gaming. The franchise has a good amount of fans that grew up playing it on the Wii, so it’d be a semi-popular pick.
The franchise could also add more diversity. There is only one realistic character in Smash, being Snake, so a diver could add to that list. On top of that, the lack of stages, assists, or even characters related to the sea could be fixed with the series inclusion as it’d offer unique characters that bring in the creatures of the sea, or how about having stages be fully underwater for once. We may have Pirate Ship, Starfy, and maybe the Inklings/Octolings to include ocean content, but I’d like to see much more than what we got.
Also for Music Buffs, the soundtrack to Endless Ocean is Incredible! Super relaxing and just beautiful in every way, I’ll be posting links in the music section.
Addressing Detractors of The Series
If we are to get more content from this series in the game, we will have to answer the detractions the series will potentially have, as this series is big enough for at least some content.
Obscurity and Lack of Relevancy
I don’t think this should be much of an issue now that we have K Rool in Smash, as he was gone longer than the Endless Ocean franchise, but still made it in. One thing to note though is that Nintendo did trademark the name recently, so maybe a new title is on the way, so Smash could advertise it to give it a boost in sales.
Death of The Wii Era
Nintendo is trying to right their wrongs by destroying the Wii era and the more ‘casual’ gamer focus they had. Endless Ocean is primarily a ‘casual’ Wii title, so they may kill it off.
My hope is that the franchise can stay alive, as both Endless Ocean titles are heavily overlooked and deserve more praise. The franchise may be casual, but it deserves to stick around as there are no gimmicks and the love for the series is strong. We shouldn’t let such a gem of a franchise die so easily.
Realism in Smash
Endless Ocean is a realistic franchise, but a fighter could work for the series or really any content. We already have a move set listed below, but if you are concerned about realism in Smash, then Snake should have been the point that makes it acceptable.
What The Series Can Bring
The series has tons of content that can translate well into Smash, from characters to stages, the series is brimming with interesting concepts that could be looked at by the Smash team. For this part we'll go by sections to give you and idea of what the series could bring.

Stage Potential
I think most would love a stage from the series, but what would the stage be? Well I’m going to suggest one of the most iconic locations from the games.
- Nineball Island - A consistently reoccuring location in Endless Ocean Blue World, the island can be a peaceful location with the camper and Nancy’s shop (with Nancy in back running it) in the background. The side of the island will have a dock and the small L&L Diving services boat and be a place where Dolphins, Orcas, and Belugas may creep out to say hello, by the dock as to not intrude on battle. You can call them for an appearance by hitting the bell, like how you break the signs in the back of Ryu’s stage. The stage will hold no obstacles as Endless Ocean is a peaceful series, leaving players with a flat battleground and water to swim in on both sides

- Valka Castle - The stage would be a stage that is completely submerged under water. The sunken 16th century castle would make for a great stage that has a similar layout to Luigi’s Mansion, or Tomodachi Life, where there are multiple rooms to explore. The King’s chamber is the main room, containing the throne of Prince Valka in the back and his mural on the wall. Another room would be the Mermaid’s Ballroom, a standard ballroom were many legendary creatures can be seen from the window, including the deep predator Thanatos, and the Jet Black Manta Ray, Phantom. The third room is the Underwater gallery, this two has a window with a lurking Thanatos as he goes between the two rooms, and the window contains the bizarre Anomalocaris, a bug like creature. There are some smaller rooms including the collapsed gallery as a hall where fish swim, the armory, and finally a treasure vault make up the last three rooms. Finally the tower has a spiraling top end that leads out of the castle. Many hammerhead sharks can be seen swimming in the background. The stage has no dangers to fit the peaceful feel of Endless Ocean, and all vicious fish are background details. The stage also makes players jump higher and fall slower, and movement is slow due to water physics.

- Ship’s Rest (Ocean’s Graveyard) - Another stage with water physics, the stage takes place on an old wrecked ship known as the Navier, and some planes. You can go on top of the ship and the plane parts, or go into the interior of the ship. Banded Dogfish can be seen on girders of the ship in the background of the interior, while great white can be seen swimming about in the ocean. Orcas can also be seen swimming around, and the background also contains the dreaded shark, Magu Tapa. Once again the stage has no hazards, so have fun
- The Gabbiano - The main headquarters of Endless Ocean, the boat provides a good amount of space as you move through the water in a similar fashion to the Pirate Ship. Sometimes an African Penguin, a Marine Iguana, a seal or walrus, or even a polar bear may climb aboard. Don’t worry though, they just hang out in the background.
Music Tracks
Endless Ocean has many extraordinary tracks, so the music for stages could have an amazing selection. The music for the Endless Ocean Stage will have many of Endless Ocean’s tracks, alongside some other water based Nintendo franchises like Wave Race or Steel Diver.

Endless Ocean Character?
If Endless Ocean got a character, then me and fellow Endless Ocean fan Cetus believe you have one of two options, those being a generic diver from Endless Ocean 1 & 2, or the main character of the second game, Oceana.
Why The Diver? (Captain Shades’ Pick)
If Endless Ocean did get a character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate why would it be a generic diver? Are there no other options?
I would choose the diver, or avatar player, as they are the main character of the franchise, and other titles have done the same with Villager for Animal Crossing or Wii Fit Trainer for Wii Fit. Going by the trend these two set, being in a similar ‘casual vien’ to Endless Ocean, I can see Sakurai doing the same for this franchise. The diver is also the only character to appear in both titles, so that way the first game isn’t forgotten.
The diver can also add more diversity to Smash as, unlike other avatars, you can change the race of the diver, so for the few people complaining about the lack of other races in Smash, this could help in solving the issue. While I don’t particularly look at things like that when choosing characters, I don’t think the criticisms are wrong, so having a character that can be male or female, while also having more options in terms of race would never be a bad thing to add.
Along with more diversity, the diver also offers a good base to include other characters from the series as costumes as they all fit the same body type, that way the favorites don’t get left out.
Why Oceana Louvier? (Cetus’ Pick)
Why would Oceana be the representative for Endless Ocean? She only appeared in one game, so how could she represent the whole series?
Oceana would be a good choice as she was an iconic character from the series, unlike the generic human diver. Unlike Animal Crossing with the villager, Endless Ocean doesn’t have a stylized art style, so a diver would be boring. Oceana is also a female, which was a big topic in the Smash Wii U days as people wanted more females, so having a full female would be good for representation.
Also why can’t Oceana represent the whole franchise, Ness did it for Earth Bound, which at the time had two main protagonists. Blue World is generally considered the better game, so it should get more representation, while the original gets stages.
Oceana’s Flamboyant Echo, Gaston Gray (Cetus’s Pick)
Cetus felt that if his diver, Oceana, ever had an echo it should be Gaston Gray. Gaston is a very fun character from the franchise being a hot shot tv star and an excellent treasure hunter. GG’s inclusion would add another Endless Ocean character and be Smash’s first African American character, seeing how is a famous American diver.
What Can The Diver Bring/ Moveset (Captain Shades’ Moveset)
The diver would have a unique moveset, relying on diving techniques, similar to how the Wii Fit Trainer has many yoga poses. The Diver would also include a wide array of sea creatures in the specials as Endless Ocean is all about your interactions with animals, so it’d be criminal not to include the various creatures.
The Diver would be a character with terrible ground game, being very slow, as the world around them emulates the ocean, so walking speed is as slow as possible. The Diver will have amazing air game though, as propel themself across the stage as if they are swimming. This character would essentially be a reverse Little Mac, very floaty jumps and great recovery options, but a slow movement speed when handling ground combat.

Oceana Louvier Moveset Potential (Cetus’ Moveset)
While my diver thread may have come first, another user, and major Endless Ocean fan, Cetus decided that Oceana Louvier should be the character and designed a different moveset for her. This just goes to show that an Endless Ocean character can have so much potential in Smash and so many moves.

Final Smash
“The Song of Dragons”- The camera zooms in on Oceana smiling, eyes glowing with yellow delight. She equips the Lapis Lazuli flute and plays the cursed Song of Dragons. The stage rumbles and out breaches the Singing Dragons who pop out from behind the stage and deal massive damage to those caught in their attack. The whales breach three times in quick succession, dealing a massive 50% to those hit and having incredible vertical knockback. It ends with the whales singing their version of the Song of Dragons before vanishing beyond the stage. Tail flukes waving one in the wake of their destruction.

- Neutral Special - (Pulsar Gun) The Diver will pull out the pulsar weapon from Endless Ocean Blue World and shoot an opponent to stun them. Basically it’s the same move that Zero Suit Samus has.
- Up Special - (Dolphin Ride) The Diver grabs on to his Dolphin companion to swim upwards. The dolphin will do the iconic arched jump, giving the diver a good vertical and horizontal recovery.
- Side Special - (Jet Ski) The Diver gets on his jet ski in a similar vein to the Wario bike. This would be a reference to the Endless Ocean games having jet skis along with the idea of referencing Wave Race (another water based franchise) in the moveset, similar to how villager references Balloon Trip.
- Down Special - (Danger! Predator Approaching!) The Diver will quickly swim out of the way as opponent attack for a counter move, except the diver won’t be doing the attack. To bring in the iconic sharks of the franchise, a shark will attack an opponent for the diver, while they use the pulsar in the background. The sharks should alternate between the two iconic sharks of the titles, being Magu Tapa from Endless Ocean and Thanatos from Endless Ocean Blue World.
Grabs
- Neutral Grab - (Kraken Jr.) The legendary creature, Kraken Jr., grabs opponents and squeezes them for damage.
- Side Grab/Throw - (Big Bobby) The legendary creature smacks the opponent away.
- Down Grab/Throw - (Pelago Crocodile) The legendary creature bites onto the opponent pulling them to the ground.
- Up Grab/Throw - (Mama Cortica) The legendary creature uses her tail to slap the opponent upwards. Don’t question where she came from, she seems to just appear.
- Up Taunt - Sea Lion Clapping
- Side Taunt - Ocean Encyclopedia
- Down Taunt - Beluga’s Cry
Final Smash
“The Song of Dragons” - Using the Dragon Flute from Endless Ocean Blue World, the diver summons the Whales, including the Humpbacks commonly found in the sequel, along with the mysterious White Mother from Endless Ocean.
The Diver’s Alts
- Default (Male) - The Diver will wear the original green and black swimsuit from the first entry and have the dark tan option. Basically the default diver.
- Default (Female) - The Diver will be a female in the same green and black attire as the male to represent the first game, but have the fair skin. She will also have a ponytail.
- The Blue Suit (Male) - A fair tanned male wearing the blue and black swimsuit from Endless Ocean Blue World. He will have the mustache that the default character has.
- The Blue Suit (Female) - A dark tanned female wearing the default blue and black swimsuit from the sequel. She will have short hair like the default female in the sequel.
- Oceana Louvier (Jean Eric’s Grand Daughter) - She is your partner in Endless Ocean Blue World and can be seen as the main character. She sports a yellow and red swimsuit and seems to be in the medium tan range. She is very popular, so an alt of her is a must.
- Finley (The Eternal Rival) - He requests that you befriend an assortment of different creatures in Endless Ocean Blue World. He wears glasses, a grey bandana, and has a blue and white swimsuit. He also seems to be in the medium tan range. He can also be the Endless Ocean villain rep since people did request more villains/rival characters.
- Hayako Sakurai (The Brilliant Japanese Scientist) - An experienced diver with many PHDs, she becomes friends with the player and others in Endless Ocean Blue World. She has a fair tan, and wears a white swimsuit with green stripes. She’s an important character, so she definitely deserves an alt.
- Gaston Gray (GG) (The American Salvanger) - GG is a flamboyant TV sensation that comes diving with the player,as he is well known for finding treasures. He wears a fiery red and black swimsuit and has a dark tan. He’s a fun character that is definitely deserving of an alt.

Specials
- Neutral Special - (Pulsar Gun) Oceana takes out the pulsar gun to fire a quick electromagnetic blast that travels at the speed of Fox's projectile. She can fire three times with a very tiny gap between shots before the pulsar needs to be reloaded. If all three of these shots connect, the opponent will be paralyzed for 40 frames.
- Up Special - (Dolphin Ride) Oceana blows her whistle which causes a dolphin to spring out from below her and carry Oceana up into the air. During the brief period before the dolphin comes out where Oceana blows her whistle, the trick will differ depending on which angle you input during that window. The spin jump is the default, front flip for the forward input, and a backflip for a backwards input.
- Side Special - (Fish Food) When used, Oceana will produce a glob of fish food and lob it two crate lengths away. Once it makes contact with the ground, a school of yellow tangs will swim towards it to feast.
- Down Special - (Multisensor) Oceana uses the multisensor and unearths an item from below her. The unearthing animation depends on which item is pulled. This is like Peach’s down special but with a notable difference. The items she uncovers depend on how long the B button is held. Each item changing after 20 frames of pressing.
Taunts
- Up Taunt - Oceana breathes into her respirator, creating the breathing sound effect from the games
- Side Taunt - Oceana wiggles around a fish before tossing it.
- Down Taunt - Oceana takes pictures with her underwater camera.
Final Smash
“The Song of Dragons”- The camera zooms in on Oceana smiling, eyes glowing with yellow delight. She equips the Lapis Lazuli flute and plays the cursed Song of Dragons. It ends with the whales singing their version of the Song of Dragons before vanishing beyond the stage. Tail flukes waving one in the wake of their destruction.
Oceana’s Alts
- Default - Oceana wears her yellow and red swimsuit.
- Red - The swimsuit has the same design as GG’s, having some fiery patterns
- Cortica Green - She wears a white swimsuit with green sides, reminiscent of Hayako
- Black - The suit is a dark grey with white gray lines to represent Thanatos
- White - The suit is white with light grey stripes to represent the White Mother
- Purple - The suit becomes a light purple with white stripes to represent The Okeanos Guardian
- Swimming vest - Oceana wears a life jacket to reference Katherine Sunday.
- Gatama Midriff - She wears the standard flower t-shirt and shorts from Nineball Island.
Assist Trophy Potential
If Endless Ocean does receive a character, than an assist would need to come along with them, so I suggest the two non-playable human characters from the titles should be the assists.
- Katherine Sunday - Being the Marine Biologist she is, and seeing as her ship usually has a penguin guest, I think her assist would have her chasing down her penguin friend, while pushing fighters out of the way. She will also be a non-KOable assist as hitting an average human girl seems unfair.
- Jean Eric - He is the captain of the R&R Diving services boat, so he will ride into the middle of the stage, creating waves that can knock players back. Get caught in the middle and he’ll deal high damage as fighters get hit by the boat. He is yet another non-KOable assist.
- Okeanos Guardian -The giant shark is summoned and will swim back and forth throughout the stage, targeting the closest player. The caution sign will start to blink and those who don't get away in time are hit for massive damage.
