[I. INTRODUCTION]

1. Who is Diddy Kong?

Diddy Kong is the famed sidekick of the protagonist of the Donkey Kong (DK) Series, Donkey Kong. He first appeared in 1994 in the game Donkey Kong Country which was produced by Rare. Rare, a United Kingdom-based video game developing industry is also credited with creating Diddy.

Diddy was actually intended to be an updated version of Donkey Kong Jr. Nintendo was not very happy with the changes Rare had made to the series and had given Rare the option of either sticking with Donkey Kong Jr. or giving the new character a name. The original idea showcased in the creation of Diddy was that he be named 'Dinky Kong'. Unfortunately due to important legal issues, they settled with Diddy.

2. The Plot Behind the DK Series

Donkey Kong was created when Shigeru Miyamoto was assigned by Nintendo to convert Radar Scope, a game that had been released to test audiences with poor results, into a game that would appeal more to Americans. The result was a major breakthrough for Nintendo and for the videogame industry. Sales of the machine were brisk, with the game becoming one of the best-selling arcade machines of the early 1980s. The gameplay itself was a large improvement over other games of its time, and with the growing base of arcades to sell to, it was able to gain huge distribution. In 1981 Falcon created a legitimate clone of Donkey Kong known as Crazy Kong for distribution in non-US markets.

In Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo Co., Ltd., MCA Universal sued Nintendo over copyright violations, claiming that Donkey Kong was a copy of King Kong. Nintendo's lawyer, Howard Lincoln, who would go on to become a Senior Vice President of the company, discovered that Universal didn't own the copyright to King Kong either, and was able to not only win the lawsuit (as well as several court appeals), but get Universal to pay the legal costs. Ironically, it was MCA Universal that previously won a lawsuit declaring King Kong was in the public domain. The case was an enormous victory for Nintendo, which was still a newcomer to the U.S. market. The case established Nintendo as a major player in the industry and arguably gave the company the confidence that it could compete with the giants of American media.

Because of the huge success of Donkey Kong, Nintendo of America was able to grow and release many more games in succeeding years, and had the resources necessary to release the Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States.

The series took a different direction in 1994 when Diddy first appeared in Donkey Kong Country. The main purpose was to show off Rare's brand new CGI graphics. From then on, the series began to follow the storyline developed in DK Country. This storyline consists of Donkey Kong and his sidekick Diddy trying to stop King K. Rool from stealing their hoard of bananas. From that point and on, the series seemed to go by this type of storyline.

3. Allies

a) Dixie Kong



Dixie Kong is Diddy Kong’s girlfriend and sidekick in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Dixie Kong’s greatest asset is her long, blond ponytail. Her ponytail has the ability to rotate like a helicopter, allowing Dixie to slow down and control her descent to the ground when she is in the air. She can also use her ponytail to lift Barrels and attack enemies. Although she is a bit slower than Diddy Kong, the versatility of her ponytail more than makes up for it. Dixie can also be recognized by her trademark pink beret. The beret has a gold Rare logo pin attached to it, although in recent games the Rare pin has been removed due to Microsoft now holding the rights to Rareware

b) Cranky Kong



Cranky Kong is Donkey Kong's fourth-wall breaking and constantly complaining and rambling father. Cranky is the original Donkey Kong.According to the Donkey Kong Country series, Cranky Kong is likely the original Donkey Kong from the arcade games. (although Nintendo, who now owns the Donkey Kong rights, supports this fact very rarely, choosing to say that it's always been the current Donkey Kong). During his youthful prime, Cranky Kong kidnapped Pauline, was kidnapped by Jumpman (Mario), and even battled Stanley the Bugman in a greenhouse.

c) Donkey Kong



Donkey Kong, also known as DK, is a powerful Kong from Donkey Kong Island. In fact, there have been two separate Donkey Kong. The original Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong arcade game eventually became Cranky Kong, while his son Donkey Kong Jr. became the current Donkey Kong. The current Donkey Kong is a carefree simian who spends his days collecting Bananas and spending time with his friends, particularly Diddy Kong. However, when trouble arises, Donkey Kong jumps headfirst into the action to help his friends and protect his island.

d) Lanky Kong



Lanky Kong is a wacky looking orange orangutan and ally of Donkey Kong and the Kong family.
Lanky's first appearance was in the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64. In this game Lanky is one of the many Kongs imprisoned by the Kremling Krew at the start of the game. Lanky is found in the Llama's temple in the area Angry Aztec, Donkey Kong and his Coconut Shooter are needed to release Lanky from his imprisonment by the Kremlings.
Once Lanky is released players become capable of collecting blue Bananas, coins and Blueprints.
Throughout the game Lanky gains a variety of bizarre abilities from drinking Cranky Kong's various potions. Some of these abilities include Lanky walking on his hands, inflating himself like a balloon and walking on his hands at super-fast speeds. Lanky's weapon is the Grape Shooter, a long blow tube that shoots large grapes. His instrument is trombone, which allows him to use the powerful Trombone Tremor attack.

He is also able to transform into Enguarde in DK64.

e) Chunky Kong



Chunky Kong is a character who debuted in Donkey Kong 64. His name is often wrongly applied to his younger brother, Kiddy Kong.
Chunky Kong is a big, strong ape that helps Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, and Lanky Kong on their mission to defeat King K. Rool and his Kremling army. His weapon is a bazooka that launches pineapples. He is not as fast as the other Kongs, and cannot Jump as high as them, but he makes up for it with raw strength, being the only Kong who can lift large Boulders.
After drinking Cranky's potions, Chunky can do a super strong hit, become super huge, and become invisible. Chunky's instrument is the triangle.

f) Ting Kong



Tiny Kong is Dixie Kong’s younger sister and as such is the cousin of Kiddy Kong and Chunky Kong. She is one of the five playable characters in Donkey Kong 64. She is very nimble and is the fastest of the characters in DK 64.

In this game Tiny is one of the many Kongs imprisoned by the Kremling Krew at the start of the game. She is found in the area Angry Aztec.

Once Tiny is released, she can collect purple Bananas, coins and Blueprints.

g) Kiddy Kong



Kiddy Kong is a playable character and the sidekick of Dixie Kong in the games Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III. He is also Dixie Kong's cousin. Additionally, Kiddy Kong is the cousin of Dixie's sister Tiny Kong, and the younger brother of Chunky Kong. Overall, Kiddy Kong is the youngest member of the Kong Family. Kiddy Kong's most notable attribute is his incredible strength. Despite his age, he rivals Donkey Kong himself in terms of size and sheer physical power.

h) Candy Kong



Candy Kong is Donkey Kong's girlfriend and ally in some of his adventures.

The first appearance of Candy Kong was in the game Donkey Kong Country. Here, she managed Candy's Save Point where Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can save their progress. In the Game Boy Color remake of Donkey Kong Country, Candy instead, manages the game's various mini-games. In the Game Boy Advance remake, Candy's occupation is once again changed. She now runs a dance studio where the Kongs can play mini-games.

i) Funky Kong



Funky Kong is a Kong inhabitant of Donkey Kong Island and member of the Kong Family; one of the hero Donkey Kong's best friends and allies, Funky Kong first appears in the game Donkey Kong Country and has made various subsequent appearances since, often selling or offering some service to his friends, but he occasionally appears as a playable character in spin-off games.

In the Donkey Kong Country games, he would allow Diddy and Donkey Kong to use his supply of barrels.

j) Wrinkly Kong



Wrinkly Kong is the wife of Cranky Kong and mother of Donkey Kong, she is also an intelligent ally of the Kongs.

The first appearance of Wrinkly Kong was in the game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Here Wrinkly manages the Kong Kollege where Diddy and Dixie Kong can save their game progress. Wrinkly, like her husband Cranky Kong can also give the Kongs information on the various items and objects found throughout the game.

Her role would follow throughout the DK games until Donkey Kong 64. In this game she has appeared to have passed on after the events beforehand. She is now a ghost that inhabits Wrinkly Doors which if a Kong steps in front of the doors, she would appear and give useful hints of what to do.

k) Rambi



Rambi the Rhinoceros is the first Animal Buddy to appear in the Donkey Kong Country series. He is found in a crate, midway into the first level of the original Donkey Kong Country. He has made the third most appearances in the Donkey Kong Country series, appearing in five games. He is behind Enguarde and Squawks, who have appeared in six games each. However, Rambi is always the first Animal Buddy to be released in whatever game he appears in.

Rambi’s greatest asset is his giant horn which he uses to defeat enemies. Additionally, Rambi can use his horn to open up hidden passages. All games following Donkey Kong Land give Rambi the ability to supercharge his attack. After charging, Rambi will run at incredibly fast speeds, taking out a line of enemies or breaking down heavy barriers. In Donkey Kong 64, he only appears in the level Jungle Japes, as well as a few mini-games. Only Donkey Kong can transform into him.

l) Enguarde



Enguarde the Swordfish is the Animal Buddy that has the most playable appearances in the Donkey Kong Country series. Squawks the Parrot has the same number of appearance as Enguarde, however, Squawks is not a playable character in the first Donkey Kong Country game (he merely holds a flashlight in one level).

Enguarde is the greatest swimmer of all the Kongs and Animal Buddies; and his pointed bill can be used to attack underwater enemies. However, he is useless on land.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, Enguarde can supercharge his attack. When released, he can use his bill to break through walls or defeat a line of enemies.

Enguarde is one of only three Animal Buddies who gets to fight a boss character. Enguarde fights Barbos the sea urchin during the events of Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land 3. Interestingly Enguarde is incapable of using his Supercharge attack in Donkey Kong Land 3.

Lanky is able to transform INTO Enguarde in DK64.

m) Squacks



Squawks the Parrot is an Animal Buddy that first appeared in the game Donkey Kong Country. Along with Enguarde, Squawks has the most non-cameo appearances of all the animal buddies in the Donkey Kong series (however, Enguarde has the most playable appearances). Interestingly enough, Squawks is the only Animal Buddy who fulfills multiple tasks throughout the series.

In the original Donkey Kong Country, Squawks only appears in one level, "Torchlight Trouble". Once released from his crate, Squawks would follow Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong through the pitch-black cavern. Armed with a bright lantern, Squawks lit up the surrounding area, allowing the Kongs to see ahead and complete the dark level.

n) Winky



Winky the Frog is an animal buddy from the original Donkey Kong Country. Since he is a frog, Winky can jump extremely high. He can also defeat enemies that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong cannot defeat by themselves (which is strange, because it would make more sense that a gorilla’s huge foot could do more damage than a frog’s soft belly). Additionally, Winky is one of Cranky’s favorite animal buddies (His other favorite is Expresso the Ostrich). However, Winky is only playable in one game, meaning he has the least number of playable appearances of all the playable animal buddies. In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, a Winky figurine can be seen in Cranky Kong’s Monkey Museum. Winky has similar abilities to another animal buddy, Rattly the Rattlesnake.

o) Espresso



Expresso the Ostrich is a large ostrich wearing sneakers and friend of the Kongs.

Expresso's first appeared in the game Donkey Kong Country as one of the game's four Animal Buddies. Expresso can run at fast speeds and glide through the air by flapping his wings rapidly. Interestingly Expresso has no offensive capabilities at all meaning he has no way to defend himself against threats; though some small enemies may pass under Expresso's legs leaving Expresso unharmed.

Expresso reappears in Donkey Kong Country's semi-sequel Donkey Kong Land as one of the games two Animal Buddies (the other buddy being Rambi the Rhino). In this game Expresso's abilities remain relatively the same as before.

p) Rattly



Rattly the Rattlesnake is a large green and red ringed snake whose body is coiled, allowing him to jump high through the air like a spring; despite being an inhabitant of Crocodile Isle, Rattly is allied with the Kong Family and is described as "rebelling" against the reptilian Kremling Krew by aiding them.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Rattly, first appearing in the level "Topsail Trouble", would allow Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong to ride him after they release him from his crate. With his superb jumping ability, Rattly would allow the Kongs to reach high areas normally unreachable by them. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest also featured an entire level dedicated to Rattly known as "Rattle Battle", which was also the first level that had the Kongs changing into an Animal Buddy by using an Animal Barrel.

q) Squitter



Squitter the Spider is a large, friendly spider covered in orange and black fur (which has a vague resemblance to lava) and an Animal Buddy ally to the Kong Family. Squitter possesses the ability to fire webbing from his mouth, that will either act as a projectile that can hurt enemies or become floating platforms that can be used to reach high areas or cross gaps.

Squitter first appeared in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest as an inhabitant of Crocodile Isle, first encountered in Crocodile Cauldron and later in many other locations, such as Krazy Kremland. Squitter even has an entire level dedicated to him in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest known as Web Woods, which makes frequent use of his ability to spawn web platforms. Squitter makes a return appearance in Donkey Kong Land 2.

r) Clapper



Clapper the Seal is a seal Animal Buddy found in the games Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2.

In both of the aforementioned games Clapper appears in only two level: "Lava Lagoon" and "Clapper's Cavern". In "Lava Lagoon" Clapper appears throughout the level to aid Diddy and Dixie Kong by using his breath to cool down the boiling hot water in the level; thus making it safe to swim in.

In "Clapper's Cavern" Clapper once again uses his breath abilities to aid the Kongs. Here Clapper freezes the water in the level so the Kongs can walk on it, keeping them safe from the Snapjaw piranha below the surface of the water.

Aside from the various remakes of Donkey Kong Country 2 Clapper has yet to appear again.

s) Glimmer



Glimmer the Anglerfish is a brown colored anglerfish and one of the few friendly inhabitants of Crocodile Isle, living in one of the island's sunken ships in the Krem Quay. Glimmer is also an Animal Buddy friend of the Kong Family.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Glimmer appears in one level, his apparent home, "Glimmer's Galleon", where he aids Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong through the oily black water using the bright light attached to his head. Glimmer will swim behind the Kongs at a steady pace and cannot be harmed by enemies.

Though Glimmer is absent from Donkey Kong Land 2, being replaced by light casting barrels, he does appear on the game's box art, which portrays him as aiding Diddy and Dixie Kong in a sunken ship.

It is possible that Glimmer may have been intended to reappear in the now cancelled Nintendo GameCube game Donkey Kong Racing, as he can briefly seen in the game's trailer in the scene where Diddy Kong and Tiny Kong ride a pair of Enguarde underwater.

t) Espresso II



Expresso II is an ostrich Animal Buddy found only in the GameBoy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

Expresso II was apparently bought by Cranky Kong who used the "vast fortune" he made from his "starring role" in the game Donkey Kong Country. Cranky had planned on raising Expresso II as a racing bird; unfortunately Expresso II was extremely small and weak. Expresso II can be found, along with Cranky, at Cranky's Hut.

In order to make Expresso II big and strong Cranky told both Diddy and Dixie Kong to find various Golden Feathers scattered throughout the levels of Donkey Kong Country 2. Each feather given to Expresso II would raise one of the tiny bird's stats, and increase him in size.

Expresso II is not to be confused with his namesake, Expresso despite the two being identical in appearance there both different.

4. Enemies

a) Kremling



The Kremlings are a race of crocodiles that originated from Crocodile Isle. They first appeared in Donkey Kong Country. Kremlings come in many different varieties. Most Kremlings are a part of the Kremling Krew. Kremlings also made a few appearances in various sports titles in the Mario series. Kremlings can be seen in the background of the Donkey Kong Jungle court in Mario Power Tennis, and they take on the role of goalies in Super Mario Strikers. The Kremlings apparently originate from the Lost World on Crocodile Isle, an island mostly composed of swampland. They make brief appearances in the Jungle Japes stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

b) King K. Rool



King K. Rool, who has gone by many aliases, is the malevolent ruler of the Kremlings and the Master of the Kremling Krew. He is also the archenemy of Donkey Kong and his allies. King K. Rool has repeatedly tried to steal the Kongs' Banana Hoard for unknown reasons, and has even kidnapped members of the Kong Family on various occasions.
King K. Rool first appeared in Donkey Kong Country as the game's main antagonist and final boss. K. Rool and his gang of minions, the Kremling Krew, came to Donkey Kong Island one stormy night with intention to steal Donkey Kong's fabled Banana Hoard. Sending several Kremlings to Donkey's tree house to steal the precious bananas, the Kremlings encountered little resistance as the only person guarding them was Donkey Kong's nephew and apprentice, Diddy Kong. Knocking Diddy aside and sealing him in a barrel, the Kremlings stole
the banana hoard.

c) Kip



Kip is a Kremling (possibly Kritter, the most common type of Kremling) child that appears as a playable character in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. He was made to rival Diddy Kong, and as such he has the same racing stats as him. His relationship with Kass is unknown.

d) Kass


Kass is a Kremling (possibly Kritter) child and a playable character in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. She was made to rival Dixie Kong, and as such she has the same racing stats as her. She is also the first known Kremling to be explicitly female. She also has hair, a trait most Kremlings lack. Her relationship with Kip is unknown.


[II. GAME APPEARANCES]

1. Donkey Kong Country Series



Diddy Kong first appeared in Donkey Kong Country, here he was still Donkey Kong's apprentice and an in-training video-game star. Wanting to humor an over eager Diddy, Donkey decided to let Diddy guard his Banana Hoard. Unfortunately, when DK assigned this duty to Diddy he hadn't expected the Kremling Krew to attack. Unable to hold off an attack by a Krusha, Diddy was sealed in a barrel. The next morning Donkey awoke and, realizing his bananas were missing, he found and released Diddy and the two set off to reclaim them and drive the Kremlings off of Donkey Kong Island.

Disaster soon struck in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, when the Kremling Krew kidnapped Donkey Kong and whisked him away to their own island, Crocodile Isle. K. Rool threatened to never return Donkey Kong unless he was given the Banana Hoard, which Diddy refused to give because all the trouble that he and Donkey Kong went through to recover it in the previous game. It was up to Diddy and Dixie to venture through Crocodile Isle and rescue Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool. Near the end of DK Country 2, Donkey Kong was rescued by Diddy and Dixie and Crocodile Isle sank into the ocean.

Diddy was not quite a hero anymore when Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. After the stressing events of Donkey Kong Land 2 Diddy and Donkey decided to go vacationing in the Northern Kremisphere, planning to return to Donkey Kong Island in a few days time. The duo never came back. Dixie, worried about the two Kongs, decided to venture to the Northern Kremisphere to search for them, her cousin Kiddy Kong in tow with her. After Dixie and Kiddy defeated Baron K. Roolenstein they discovered that KAOS, K. Rool's stand-in leader for the Kremling Krew, contained Diddy and Donkey. It seemed K. Rool had abducted Diddy and Donkey for the purpose of using their brain energy to power KAOS. After being rescued Diddy and Donkey went back to Donkey Kong Island while Dixie and Kiddy took care of what was left of the Kremling Krew.

2. Donkey Kong Land Series

Donkey Kong Land is a video game developed by Rareware for the Game Boy. Released in 1995, it is a handheld follow-up of Donkey Kong Country. The game was also one of the few Game Boy games to feature a specially colored cartridge (yellow), which was also used on the sequels, Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land III. It was also one of the first games to feature Super Game Boy special features, including a rendered jungle border across the television screen.

The game is a pseudo-sequel to Donkey Kong Country; after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong defeat King K. Rool and get the Banana Hoard back, Cranky Kong makes a bet with the two Kongs that they couldn't do it on a handheld game. He demands that K. Rool steals the Banana Hoard again, and DK and Diddy are set out on another quest.

The game is often mistaken as a Game Boy 'port' of Donkey Kong Country. Although this is true in the manner that the two games play the same using the same engine - it is false because not only is the storyline different (if only a little), but Donkey Kong Land has different levels, enemies and bosses to Donkey Kong Country.

3. Diddy Kong Racing Series



In Diddy Kong Racing, while lazing around one day while the rest of the Kong clan was out, Diddy eventually got a letter from his long-time friend Timber. The letter was asking Diddy for help, as an intergalactic bully named Wizpig had invaded Timber's Island and Timber needed Diddy's help to get rid of him. Diddy and Timber, along with a few friends eventually managed to drive off Wizpig and release those who were under his mind-control.

Diddy Kong has recently appeared in Diddy Kong Racing DS, a semi-remake of Diddy Kong Racing. He seems to sound like a little kid with a cold in this game.

4. Donkey Kong 64



King K. Rool, hungry for revenge, tried to attack Donkey Kong Island. Luckily for the island's inhabitants K. Rool's weapon, the Blast-O-Matic was damaged after K. Rool's Ship crashed into a small island. To buy time to repair his weapon K. Rool had Donkey Kong's Banana Hoard re-stolen, and had several Kong's kidnapped, Diddy included.

Diddy was eventually freed from his captivity in Jungle Japes by Donkey Kong. From then on Diddy aided Donkey and the other Kongs with shutting down the Blast-O-Matic and getting rid of King K. Rool by collecting red bananas and coins and using his abilities gained from Cranky, as well as his electric guitar from Candy and his popguns from Funky. Eventually K. Rool was sent packing by Funky Kong.

5. Donkey Konga Series



Diddy, along with Donkey and Dixie, became a musical star in Donkey Konga and Donkey Konga 2. He also appears in Donkey Konga 3. He helped them earn plenty of money, which was presumably used to buy Bananas.

6. DK Jungle Climber/Barrel Blast/King of Swing

Diddy Kong appears in DK Jungle Climber as well. In this game, DK can use him as a launch to hit objects. Diddy is also required to use three powerups: Hammer, Wings, and Torch. You race a ridiculously low-AI Diddy at the beginning of the game, and in one of the minigames, you also race a now hard-to-beat Diddy. Diddy plays a role in the plot as Donkey Kong's sidekick, as usual.



Diddy has low speed, but a good boost and handling in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. His rival is Kip.

In DK: King of Swing Diddy is capable of being played as in the games adventure mode by collecting twenty-four DK Coins in the games adventure mode with Donkey Kong. He along with Donkey Kong, helps to save the Jungle Jam from the Kremling Krew.

7. Appearances Outside the DK Universe

Mario Golf

Diddy Kong was playable in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. He was put into the game to act as a partner for Donkey Kong. This was the very first time Diddy Kong appeared in any traditional Marioverse game, and it would not be the last time.

Mario Kart

Diddy Kong later managed to appear in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. He was a light character, and his special weapon was the Giant Banana, which is shared with Donkey Kong. Additionally, his partner is Donkey Kong, and his own personal car is the Barrel Train. Diddy also made a cameo at the end of Banana Ruins of Mario Kart Arcade GP.

Mario Tennis

Eventually, Diddy appeared in the Mario Tennis Series. In Mario Power Tennis, he was a speedy character, and was usually paired with Donkey Kong. His Offensive Power Shot and Defensive Power Shot are Acrobatic Banana and Barrel Jet, respectively. Diddy Kong, however, has yet to appear in another Mario Tennis game.

Mario Superstar Baseball

In Mario Superstar Baseball, Diddy Kong was once again a playable character. He was a Team Captain in Exhibition Mode, and a Sub-Captain in Challenge Mode. During Challenge Mode, Diddy played on Donkey Kong's team. His special ball is the Boomerang Ball, which launches the ball out like a Boomerang, to trick the other team. This was also the first traditional Mario game appearance of Diddy Kong's girlfriend, Dixie Kong.

Mario Hoops

Diddy Kong was playable in Mario Hoops 3 on 3. Diddy Kong is a default player, and is of the Speedy class. His Special Shot is the Jet Shot, which summons a jet pack, which attaches to Diddy Kong's back. He then flies towards the basket. Additionally, Dixie Kong also managed to appear in this, once again, as an unlockable character.

Mario Strikers

He is also an unlockable captain in Mario Strikers Charged, unlocked by beating Diddy Kong in the Crystal Cup. Diddy Kong is a Playmaker Captain, and is very swift and agile. His Super Ability is Red Card!, which summons a beam of light that pulls any player, except for Diddy Kong, into the skies for 15 Seconds. A new trait of Diddy Kong in this game is that he does not smile very often, with the exception of his victory scenes, as do most other players.

Diddy Kong gained some new interesting abilities in this game. He is shown to have super natural powers, as seen with Red Card!, which summons a beam of light to take players out of the field, and his Mega Strike. When he uses his Mega Strike, he launches in the air, moves into a Buddha position, and launches the ball towards the goal without even touching it.


[III. DIDDY IN BRAWL]

1. Style of Gameplay

Recent reports from the E for All Demos tell us that Diddy is a very swift character that uses fluent acrobatic moves. He acts just how a monkey would act, if it were in a fighter game of course. Not much is known yet pre-release to Diddy's overall style in Brawl, which will be revealed hopefully when the Japanese version is put on the shelves. However, it has been said he is similar and/or the equivalent of Mario in Super Smash Brothers Melee.

2. Special Moves(B)

a) Rocketbarrel Boost



Rocketbarrel Boost is an attack that Diddy Kong can utilize once he drinks one of Cranky Kong's potions in Donkey Kong 64; once Diddy jumps into a barrel with his face on it, he will gain the Rocketbarrel Boost, a jetpack, and be able to fly around using his Peanut Pop Guns.

Rocketbarrel Boost will be Diddy's Up special move, and will allow him to fly with only his Jet Pack. Diddy Kong can charge this attack up, and if it is charged, he will be able to fly farther. Tilting the control stick allows Diddy to curve his flight path, allowing him to fly in several different directions. It causes damage to anyone who hits it. However, if Diddy Kong is attacked while flying, he will lose his Jetpack, and fall down. The jetpack will then fly away, and has a chance of hitting another player. The Rocketbarrel Boost is also used during Diddy Kong's Final Smash, Rocketbarrel Barrage.

b) Peanut Popgun



The Peanut Popguns are an item in Donkey Kong 64. Diddy Kong can buy them from Funky Kong. Their appearance is that of two small pistols made of bamboo. They are used, among other things, to shoot enemies, Peanut Switches, and Banana Balloons. In the level Fungi Forest, homing ammo can be aquired for the popguns. He also can use these guns while using his jetpack.

The Peanut Popgun will be appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as an attack for Diddy Kong. It will be Diddy Kong's standard special move, and can be charged up. When charged up, it will be much faster, and will have a better chance at hitting the opponents. However, charging it up too long is dangerous, as it might explode on Diddy Kong. The attack occasionally releases Peanuts, which can be eaten for a slight health increase. Diddy Kong also uses two Peanut Popguns when using his Final Smash, the Rocketbarrel Barrage.

c) Banana Peel

His down-B makes him toss a Banana Peel on the ground...
Also, apparently this move has a VERY efficient backwards arch.

d) Chimpy Charge

His side-B makes him leap onto an opponent and pound them madly.
Possibly similar to DK's down + B in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

4. Role in Sub Space Emissary

Not everything is known of this, as Diddy himself is mysterious because of the lack of close gameplay to display proper movesets. What we do know is that they met Bowser first in their part of the SSE. Previews show Diddy helping Donkey Kong return his hoard of bananas from the Koopas. Another preview titled "Fox's Midfortune" (which is listed below) shows Diddy attacked by Rayquaza, only to have Fox use his reflector and shoo away the beast.

5. Final Smash



In Diddy's Final Smash, he wields his trademark peanut popgun and flies using his Rocketbarrel Boost maneuver. Diddy hovers over the stage with peanuts rapidly releasing from his wooden gun.



If you tilt Diddy back and forth, his direction changes at the instant. This gives Diddy the chance to hit everybody on the stage. Sakurai suggests you master this, Diddy users!

Awesome thread! :) I really hope DK 64 gets released on virtual console soon, Ive only played DKC and DKC 2 and hear everywhere that DK 64 is great stuff. What do I expect though its made by Rare in the N64 time period, who made like nothing but great N64 games then.

Only thing I can really contribute is his d-air is a meteor smash, someone told me he swings both arms down.

Surprisingly, I got a good school lesson from playing DK 64.
For some reason, I just had to make this, since Metaknight already has his own thread

Also just occured to me that you are missing Tiny Kong from DK64, for some reason I thought Dixie and Tiny were the same, but they are different.

You could add Tiny Kong but she was just a blaitant Dixie rip off so there is no real need to add her (if you do though it is just for complete info I guess). You are also missing his Final smash and it's history (I use that word lightly). The allie section should include some of the animals that you encounter as Diddy like Rambi and Enguarde to neame 2 of them.

Great thread though, I can't wait for the updates you post.

One thing though, in the bio for DK in smash64 it says that the aracade donkey kong is the same one as the recent ones

I think he meant that on Smash 64 when you go into bios, it says that about DK.

I don't have Smash 64, so someone should check. I think its irrelevent, Rare officials said that there are 2 different Donkey Kongs.

Cranky got hell old pretty quick.
