I like it for being season 0 of Yugioh in a nutshell.
Oh god yes. I had this convo with Xonar that there seems to be this recent trend of do or die genres that seemed to have gotten really popular in Japanese culture like Battle Royal and Yugioh and also spinning into the United States in books/movies like the Hunger Games.

While the TCG, which still is mad popular, is a large reason Yugioh is around, though the anime does assist in that a lot, it did start with this do or die situation with a "children's card game."

The concepts can be incredibly stupid at time.

Pegasus invites kids to play on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Kaiba shuts a city down for a card game.
Series 2 confirms it became a sport of sort and has a school for it in the middle of nowhere.
Series 3 has them on motorcycles.

But it still remains and works because the formula gets people interested and the do or die situations make it even better, though the "Shadow Realm" more or less is killing someone or sending them to god knows where.

Phi brain is simular where they make "Death puzzles" with the goal of killing the loser like yugioh did at times. A lot of people liked season 0 because it had Yami mentally scar people for losing if not sending them to near suicidal points.

Guy loses at a game of claiming to a briefcase, Yami gives him images of being eaten alive in a river. Another guy gets turned into a human clock. Another he forces hallucinations in a ferris wheel an forces him to jump off it.

Stuff like that never really happened in the card game era so I understand why some of my friends like that more and can see why a do or die kind of thing is picking up more.

Nah, that would be strange (to me) to do.

I've only namechanged once to capitalize the "J" in my name. =P
