I'm just wondering--are we actually debating about anything? Who here actually thinks there's a good chance the earth will be destroyed or mankind will die out on 21 December 2012? I certainly don't. I think there's chance about twice as great of the world ending on that day than any other day in the near future. I give it double the chance because that day would be the perfect day for a mad scientist to activate his massively destructive weapon and wipe out the human race. I doubt that such a mad scientist with his weapon exists, however.

Let's look at history: People have predicted the world's end all over the place, and, if I'm not very much mistaken, they have invariably been wrong. We should celebrate World's End Eve every day, if you pay attention to the hobos with cardboard signs.

I'm not about to pay attention to some ancient people with their silly calendars. They may have been very mathematical, but they imbued numbers with mystical importances. Predictions based on things like that have no influence for me.

And for the last time, the Mayan calendar is not the most accurate calendar. Our current calendar is more accurate by several orders of magnitude.

Yes, thank you Jammer!

It's about time someone explained to everyone that the world will not end. That is just crazy thinking people! It would take a lot more than magnets to end the world.

The world will NOT end...just humanity.

pilosophy or philosophmore...

you guys are making most of this stuff up, how do mayan know the end, were they in Asia?
... yyyyes ...

Actually, no. The Mayas (are you really sure, Zink?) lived in South and maybe a little bit of Central America.

If they lived in Asia, would that mean they really do "know the end"?

Also, you misspelled both "philosophy" and "philosophomore". And you meant "philosopher" instead of "philosophy". And "philosophomore" isn't even a word, although it is sort of witty.

Sorry; it's just that two words have never given me so much trouble before.

As the only professional philosopher here, let me ask the following:

If the Maya were so great, then how come they're dead?

That's philosophy at its finest.

Pretty sure. I know it sounds odd.
They lived in Central American only: basically Guatemala and the Yucatan.

See the mayans made this calendar to keep up with there famring of food and always looked to the sky because they were astronomers to tell of the upcoming seasons and from that they made calendars ahead of time so because of that they made them into the future so far there calendar has been on par with our calendar to the exact minute its only off by one second the only thing about there calendar is that it ends on December 21 2012 its not the end of the world as you would say but changes will be great and as for why are they did cause they died out like every other civilization we just don't have any history on how they did cause after a certain amount time they just disappeared and left no traces of when where and why most people believe it was Famine disease and civil war where actually that history is true to the Aztecs it dosent hold true to the mayans even though they went through some of those disasters it survived into a golden age but during that golden age history just stops for the mayans because in a swoop they just disappear the mayans were a great civilization and there calendar hasn't been wrong yet so when there calendar ends who knows what will happen maybe a new age of man? or a new way to treat the months

Oh yea idk if this pertains to anything but i hear about a planet X being discovered and orbit being real awkward and it shows that has a real strong gravitational pull on us and will come near us around 2012 hehe in December its an oddity that is just coincidental

Are you joking, Masahirox? I thought that was a very good post, if you can overlook the fact that there were a couple terribly long sentences.

Nothing short or literally ripping our planet apart could cause it to 'die.' No matter what happens to you, me, or the entire human species, the world will continue. Life will continue to grow and thing will move on, even if it takes another billion years. /rant

I know the quote was over 2 months ago, but Earth won't last forever. The Earth's core is cooling off and in 5 million (or was it billion) years, the sun will become a Red Giant and will swallow the Earth

It's 5 billion! 5 million is not very long on the big scale of things.

Well, the sun exploding would be impossible, as it would not go Supernova for another 5 billion years (As it is 5 Billion years old now). And... I doubt it would be a financial crash, because the Mayans had no idea of what future economy would be like..... Now, it could be that some force (maybe China) will declare war on the rest of Earth, or maybe the Mayans actually COULD predict that Earth would be pelted with Asteroids. I'm not sure. But, IMO, I wouldn't worry about it. It's like how in 2000 or 2002 whatever we though the world would end, but it didn't. I don't see the "end" coming. Using logic, it is quite impossible they could have predicted such a thing. The Mayans most likey thought something bad may happen on this day because of all the special circumstances that were happeneing (Leap Year, Winter Solstice, Sun crossing Galactic Equator or something)

Edit: Excuse me, Green Kirby's right, it won't go Supernova it will turn into a Red Giant

Maybe the world already ended, and we're all in a matrix of computers being controlled by robots.

edit: that's actually a pretty cool idea, I'm going to go write a screenplay on it right now. No one steal my idea please. Thanks.

Maybe the world ended back in 100 bc when Rome managed to trap all of our souls by materialism and now we're all in a false haze because of a computer system somewhere in space.
