Yeah. Honestly I think the word dedicated would suit what I and a lot of other gamers are. Gaming is a hobby, a very significant one. I take my games seriously, and I look for certain things when I call a game great.
I accommodate for basically any art style, genre, and themes as long as I feel a sense of connection and accomplishment when playing. Thing is, I don't look down on the casual experience, I love casual distractions, stuff that's lighthearted and basic, but I will never see them as the best example of gaming. That's not a criticism, because there's a place for everything, but yeah, obviously when I want a full on gaming experience, I look for layers of depth in a game, and wherever those layers lie, I just look for them to be pulled off well. If a game accomplishes something very well, I will buy into it.
I'll just put my much personally praised favourite game out there as an example. Majora's Mask wasn't bloody and in your face mature and dark. As a child, I didn't even appreciate some of what it was doig, but it still had everything. The game was tough, the game connected me to the world very strongly, and it gave me great satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment whenever I succeeded at something. Maturity and depth is not in any way correlated to violence, guns, and sex. In fact, adding those things for the SAKE of looking mature is the most immature and puerile thing possible, and shows a complete ****ing ignorance to the entire concept.
Honestly, I would rather play Duke Nukem than most "hardcore mature" games because unlike those, Duke Nukem knows it is being puerile, and of course being immature and puerile is ****ing hilarious, but only when it is acknowledged and understood, and not taking itself as being mature because it is incorporating such things. Duke Nukem, an immature game but actually mature. Get it?
