I PM'd this to UMBC Super Smasher for him to put in his guide, but he recommended me to make it a thread instead. So, here it is. I mainly made this cuz I personally feel Peach's Dash Attack is THE MOST annoying attack in the game. Not the best attack, not by far, but the most annoying. This is for you goodies.
Peach’s Dash Attack
Peach’s Dash Attack IMO is the most annoying attack in the game. It just seems like you can’t escape it. The reasons why this attack is so good:
-Massive Priority. This attack takes priority over so many of Marth’s attacks.
-Long Range. The range of Peach’s dash attack is definitely deceiving. It reaches farther than you think it will.
-Long Duration. Again, the duration of this attack is deceiving. It lasts much longer than you think.
-Little Lag. Yeah, in addition to all of the above there is little lag on this attack, which makes it so that Peach can chain into other things, usually some jabs.
With this being said, there are a lot of things Marth can do about this annoying attack. Unfortunately, all of them are risky or unreliable, but some options do work better than others.
Shieldgrab- Probably the most standard way to deal with her dash attack. There are pros and cons to dealing with her dash attack.
Pros-You get a free grab on Peach. Marth’s grabs **** Peach. You can grab to Fsmash at lower percents, grab to dash attack at medium percents, and depending on her DI you can grab to Wavedash to Fsmash, or my personal favorite, at the ledge, grab to Ken combo. Not to mention grab to Fair, which leads to massive combos. Grabbing Peach is definitely a good thing.
Cons-Peach may not dash attack. Peach could grab, and although her grabs don’t **** Marth as much as Marth’s grabs **** her, they still hurt Marth. Especially over one hundred percent. This is the reason a lot of Marth’s get grabbed. Because Peach’s dash attack is so good, everyone expects her to dash attack. Smart peaches will dash at you and grab.
So shieldgrabbing peach’s dash attack comes down to this question: Is the reward of getting a grab off worth the risk of being grabbed? I narrow it down to a simple solution. When Marth is between zero and forty percent, yes the risk is worth it. Over forty percent, I won’t shieldgrab, and I recommend everyone else not to.
Wavedash backwards to Fsmash- One of my personal favorites. This pretty much works on every character in the game, especially on dash happy characters like Sheik. Unfortunately, while this does work on Peach, it doesn’t work as well as it does on other characters. This is due to the range and duration of her dash attack. In order for this to work, you need to Wavedash backwards right before peach hits you with the dash attack, which is hard to do because the attack reaches farther than it looks, and after that you need to make sure the Wavedash is a long one. I think Wavedash backwards to Fsmash is probably one of the safest options Marth has to deal with her dash attack, mainly because it prevents getting grabbed too.
Retreated Fair-This is tricky, but works well if you can get out of range of the dash attack. The same reason why Wavedash backwards to Fsmash sometimes fails is the same reason why a retreated fair will not always work. You need to make sure you jump at the correct time, so you won’t get hit by the dash attack. Just as she uses her dash attack, jump back and fair. This is mildly safe, and can lead to strong combos. This is harder to do than Wavedash backwards to Fsmash, due to the fact that a Wavedash backwards is longer than a jump, but it’s also harder to punish because of the little lag time.
Crouch Cancel to Fsmash- Yes, you can crouch cancel her dash attack. Does it work well? Sometimes. Again, this is risky because peach can run up to you and grab…or worse…she can run up to you and Down smash. Since you’ll be holding down to Crouch Cancel, your likely to take forty percent or more in damage. Another thing, after you Crouch Cancel the dash attack, what can you do? You can Fsmash, which will hit with the inside of your sword, minimizing knockback and damage, or you can dtilt. In my opinion, grabbing Peach is much better than a dtilt or poorly spaced Fsmash, and since the risk of getting grabbed/Down smashed is worse than the risks of shieldgrabbing, which is only getting grabbed, shieldgrabbing is a better option. The reward is higher, and the risk of punishment is lower.
Dash Dance away to Grab- Ah, Marth’s super effective method of getting grabs off. Unfortunately, for us, Peach’s dash attack completely wipes this method out. You can not dash away and then dash back to grab Peach due to her dash attack. ****. The range of her dash attack is long, and you may not be able to dash far away enough in time. The real reason why this method doesn’t work is because of the little lag of the dash attack. Usually, if you try this on a half decent Peach, you may escape the dash attack, but when you dash back in for the grab, Peach will jab you once or twice, because there is such small lag from the dash attack. I definitely would not recommend this.
Pivot Fsmash- This is one of my favorite methods of punishing dash attacks, but this doesn’t work nearly as well on Peach as it does other characters. Again, her dash attack has too much range for you to pivot away from it, unless you perfectly dash away just out of range of the her dash attack, which is difficult to do because it comes out fast, and the range is deceiving. Try it a few times, if you find your good at predicting where her dash attack is going to end up, then this may be a good method for you.
Fsmash- Ah, the move to end all moves. Marth’s Forward smash. I’m letting you know right now, this method almost never works, because Peaches aren’t that obvious with their dash attacks. But, once in a while, a simple Fsmash will stop Peach in her tracks. If you see Peach dash at you and your far away enough, just a simple Fsmash will send her flying. The good thing about this too is that since you have to make sure the Fsmash outranges the dash attack…your Fsmash will almost always be a tipper. Don’t get excited though. This is tricky and doesn’t work for a few reasons. First, almost no Peach is going to run at you from the other side of the stage, and if they do they won’t do it without a few Dash Dance’s or Wavedash Backwards. Second, Peach’s dash attack comes out fast. Chances are she will hit you with her dash attack before you can Fsmash. Third, the range of her dash attack is long and deceiving. You may think you can hit her with the Fsmash before she gets to you, but the dash attack will end up hitting you anways.
So there you go. I think I covered all of the methods of dealing with Peach’s dash attack. Choose which works for each situation. Just for the record, no one ever told me any of this stuff, and I didn’t get any of it from watching videos either. I figured this all out on my own, by myself, one hundred percent solo from experience playing against Peach. And yes, I still get hit by the dash attack allllll the time, so don’t expect to be stopping her dash attack one hundred percent of the time.
Anyone else wanna add anything, or tell me their preferred method?
