D-throw --> Knee practice against peach help

I miss these all the time despite putting in a good amount of time in practicing this.

I wanted to make this thread cuz I thought I'd share what I know and the troubles I am having with this simple yet often missed combo. But mainly, I can't figure out how to get this combo consistently on PEACH. against other characters (marth, jigglypuff, spacies) it is a lot easier for some reason.

I practice this combo in training mode (with c-stick enabled). I set cpu peach to around 70-85% and put the CPU action to evade.

I put the CPU to evade because the CPU will DI the down throw differently depending on when you grab her. Example: If you grab her right before she lands from a jump, the CPU will always DI the d-throw down and away (might be useful to some of you guys who didn't know this).

First Question (with more soon to come):

There are these situations where if peach DIs the down throw in some way (some sort of up and in/away direction ) that I can't seem to hit the knee without it being reverse. I tried adjusting little things like pulling back while jumping forward and it's just really frustrating. Am I just screwing up or is there certain DIs where it's always gonna be reverse knee?

Knee hits higher and lower than you probably think. If the Peach does the "Matt R DI" where it's between your short hop knee and full hop knee, you should still be able to clip her with the very top of the knee hitbox if you short hop, or the very bottom of the knee hitbox if you full hop. I don't think you should be forced to reverse knee ever. For the up and away DI, try a standing full hop knee in the forward direction, with no running head start at all.

GG7 vs MacD is a good match to watch for seeing how to catch different DIs and still connect with dthrow knee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oce9U6I-bTo

Good points Juggleguy, I am still practicing this in my room often.

I am still finding this to be one of the hardest d-throw-->knees to hit. Why is it so much harder vs peach than jigglypuff, marth, spacies, etc?.

Is it something about her particular weight, floatiness or something? or is it cuz peach can like easily wiggle out of the stun and nair falcon or something? I can't palce my finger on it...

I took a look at that match juggle guy and the first thing i noticed was this:

^That bothers me so much when it's a free knee. Ironically, peach DI'd the second d-throw better and I think that scenario is much easier to hit than the first one.

Apologies for off topic but is this a standard option in training mode? Ive never seen it. If not what you have to do to enable c-stick/change CPU action mode?

To enable c-stick in single player mode, you need to have a hacked version of melee some how. There are various ways to get hacked melee.

You can change CPU action mode in the training mode menu (Press start) and change CPU from just standing to "Evade"

The CPU will try to evade you by running away and if you get close to the CPU it'll try to jump over you. Grab the CPU before it lands and it will always DI the d-throw down and away.

I chose to set the CPU at ~70-85% because that's when I feel hitting the d-throw to knee combo is most important as it is when peaches can die from knee. Anything before that, you should probably just try to combo her to get her to dying percents. Anything after that is also useful too but I don't know at what point the combo is no longer connectible and you have to use up air. I think after 100 or something if the Peach DI's correctly you can't connect the knee....but I don't know ...

EDIT: also, is your username "It's me, Q" anyway related to twista?

Any links for this 'hacked melee' (if allowed)? Sounds interesting.

Nah the names just 'cause I couldn't get 'Q' alone, it was either that or 'Falcon.. PISS!' :bee:

There's a lot of info on smashboards on how to get c-stick enabled in melee. You'll have to do a bit of digging.

It generally involves Action Replay. (Most people have it burnt onto a disc and then play the burnt disc in a hacked wii that can play burnt games).

Magus420 posts will guide your way. If you are unfamiliar with all this stuff, it's best to consult someone whom is experienced with this or have someone send you the melee file with the c-stick hacks already enabled so all you have to do is burn that to a disc and play it in your wii (which has been hacked to enable playing burnt games).

I do.

The difficult part I'm having right now with d-throw knee on peach is like...all the different DI's she can do...I dunno. It's never this hard against jiggly puff... =/

There's these few "tricky" scenarios where it looks like you need to full jump to hit her but you actually need to do a short hop.

i'm gonna teach my gf how to di and make her practice with me.

That's hard and inefficient. It's better to just set the game in slow motion and switch controllers really quickly imo. But that's so tedious and boring.

you can set the controller to diing in a direction by holding it in the opposite when you plug it in or while holding x/y. you can still move this character around on the stage with c-stick rolling.
if you have them di straight right/left they'll keep running of the stage which is annoying, but if you have them di down& away they'll usually just duck. this is good because good players will di down&away from the combos and its the hardest to combo them this way, hence the best practice

Hmm... I never thought of that. That's really useful.

Going to have to try that
