Ok, I'm starting to get more and more into the tournament scene, but before I can get much further, I need a bit of an explanation on counterpicking. I know the bare basics of it, like you can pick another character (or something like that), but I really need someone to explain it so I can get it, both for stages and character counterpicking. If anyone can explain those to me, that would be great. Thanks in advance!

It goes something like this:

Set format (In Order of Procedure):
1. Opponents choose their characters for the first match *

2. Opponents start the stage striking procedure
(You start off with a set of starter stages and you and you opponent take turns eliminating them them until you get to one)

3. Each player may announce one stage to be banned for counterpicks of the set
(You can eliminate one stage you dislike for every game you play with that opponent)

4. The first game is played, using the stage chosen during step 2

5. The loser of the previous match announces the next match's stage from either the Starter Stage List or the Counter Stage List
(Basically, you choose a stage you think you'd do well on)

6. The winner of the previous match chooses their character

7. The loser of the previous match chooses their character

8. Repeat steps 5-7 for all proceeding matches

*Double blind character selection may be called for the first match

And that's it in laymen terms. It's from the rules linked here.

Yeah, I think it'd be pretty embarrassing going into a tournament and not knowing what the basic procedure was for stage banning and stuff

I was afraid I was going to be like: "I can ban a stage? uhh..I dunno, Corneria", and I'd be playing Doc, LOL

Yeah, I'll counterpick...uhh...dream land??

Yeah, we're planning on having a tournament at school and I might be the TO, so I'd need to know this stuff if I go with the tourney ruleset. As well as also doing another tournament between some friends and others. So knowing these rules is a huge relief.

Thanks, the school one I'll be participating in (though it'll probably go by the horrid ruleset of "2:00 matches with items on"), though the other one I'll be hosting and be the TO, while friends and others participate, so all I can hope is that they understand counterpicking as well... And I have been reading the main SBR ruleset, even favorited it just for quick reference.
