Comeback Mechanics

According to TV Tropes, a comeback mechanic is "a video game mechanic that grants advantages to losing players in favor of balance", like Rage and V-Trigger and stuff like that.

However, I keep seeing scorn towards it, saying it's "rewarding players for losing" which is apparently a bad thing. What's with the universal dislike? Did we suddenly forget that no one likes to lose?

Because the only acceptable remedy for poor skills is to git gud. :4pacman:

But seriously, I can't stand this hatred of comeback mechanics either, largely because it leads to people dumping shade and bile onto :ultlucario:, who I like precisely because his Aura is a built-in comeback mechanic.

The original Killer Instinct had a good comeback mechanic. If you were able to shake free of being dizzy before the winner could land a finisher then their damage output was trippled making it possible to actually win. But, doing so was extremely difficult (without turbos) which made it fair to the winner (who basically only ever gave up the win by bad inputs trying to do a fatality). Nowadays though the chances of a comeback are easier. It doesn't require your opponent to mess up per se, and it's easier to make the comeback especially in smash.
