Character Select Screen

I was wondering what everyone thought about the possibility of having a scrolling character select screen on the 3ds. Given the potential size of the roster and the limited size of the 3dsxl (let alone other versions) it seems like having multiple pages or characters might be the best option. This is made more likely given that the 3ds is only used by one person.

It could look something like this

I think the same menu from before has been confirmed already.
Though I'm not sure if I'd like this. I don't really like the idea of endless scrolling to pick a character, bit I haven't really played any games that use it. So I really don't know.

yeah i don't think that that will happen just because it would not feel right for a smash game i think the boxes will look like what we seen at e3 the boxes for the character then as you unlock people the boxes will get smaller when you unlock them i think that there will be at most 50 character no more that that

I dont think there has been a thread about the 3ds select screen. What are your thoughts on it where do you think the settings will go do you like it or dislike it?

It'll be interesting to see how the character icons and whatnot are sized to avoid overcrowding on the 3DS-Not-Fat, but if it's anything like the past games, it'll be fine. No reason to significantly change what isn't broken, after all.

And while I love Tatsunoko vs Capcom, I didn't like the character screen, and don't think it would fit Smash.

That is indeed what it looked like in the demo. But I'm having a hard time imagining that with 20+ more characters crammed in. Though it does seem reasonable that they could put the back buttons and stuff on the touch screen.

Indeed. It disturbed me as this is not even half the roster. Honestly, the scrolling CSS is the most plausible path if we do not want 40-50+ extremely small squares with light borders.

Maybe they'll make it so you scroll to the side to find more characters? Because we're at 37 right now, and there'll probably be a couple more newcomers and more veterans. I don't really see any other way.

I'd rather not scroll, honestly, but it would be better than things being too small. Maybe they could make multiple pages of characters that flip through if you press the shoulder buttons or something. That would probably swap faster than a slow scroll.

I feel that scrolling or having two pages will be a necessity. Otherwise the character icons will have to be shrunken to such an extent that their names will be impossible to read.

Using the shoulders to turn pages is a good idea.

The background might be white to match the SSB 3DS menu. It'll be interesting to see how it'd look like on the final version.

I can see a scrolling select screen since each person will have their own 3ds to choose their characters instead of 1 screen for all the people to select their characters on.

Yep, that's it. It's pretty obvious that when the game comes you can probably flip through pages for character select.

At least in the demo, moving the cursor downward brought it to the bottom screen (I guess for color clicking or something), so I doubt it would scroll downward. Sideways would work fine, I think I'd just rather see a page-flipping mechanism (kinda think of what happens on Melee's screen when you choose each menu option) instead of a gradual scroll. Feels faster, at least in my mind.

I honestly like that idea better , but I wouldn't be too bothered if it scrolls.

can you show me the video where you see the curser going down to the bottom screen?

heyyy this is pretty smart, i never thought of this, but the character portraits are always pretty big no matter what.
plus, this would mean that you can tap on the character you wanna pick with your stylus/finger, which isn't "fair" to the other characters ? idk sakurai thinks like that

it would be cool but i think the 3ds demo will be roughly what the menu looks like.

L/R style page flipping would be faster than scrolling, IMO.

I'd also be up for an option to mark a certain number of "Favorite Characters" that it filters to if you hold a button or something.

Flipping character pages using L/R would be useful IMO. And setting favorite characters would be great, probably you'd have to go to 'Games & More' to set it and then when you select characters there'd be a whole page for them or something.

Actually that's a nice idea, but it'll probably have smaller character roster icons, but I'm not sure how's that going to look like on 2DS and 3DS. On the XL, while having the same resolution as the other 2, it might be easier to look at.

Page flipping sounds like a great idea!

Good point. If the text struggles to write Donkey Kong and Wii Fit Trainer, it would be impossible to see Mr Game & Watch and Zero Suit Samus' name.

I like the idea of seperate pages. Press the L and R buttons to scroll to the next page of characters. I also wouldn't mind if you could sort out the icons of your choice, like have the 64 originals on one page, Melee and Brawl on another, an the newcomers have their own page.
Highly doubtful though.

I can see them fitting all characters onto the screen/same page without being hard to see.

That's maybe just me, though. I have an XL and I don't see there being a problem. The demo boxes are actually huge. I love the XL screen.

Honestly, does anyone think putting the fighters' names in both the roster box and the highlighted screen is redundant?
