Character Costumes

Say, changing your characters costume changes their model, i.e. play-style. Or perhaps, Y changes colour and X changes model. This wouldn't be viable for all characters, but a good example is pikachu - other models could be raichu and pichu. This would pretty much be a way to fit clones into the game without getting that "I got ripped off with clones" feeling. Still, Fox could pull out his staff (er... Crystal's Staff) with another costume and use that. It could add a lot of variability to the game, and even small differences, like character speed and weight would be cool, since changing movesets would be pretty extreme.

Still though, probably won't happen, but it would be interesting. Comments.

I could see it happening, not in the way how Fox whips out the staff at all though, Krystal should be a character in her SF: Adventures outfit with the staff anyway IMO. But I would like to see things like Mario dressed up like Dr. Mario, and Wario in his classic outfit etc. I'm just not to keen on entirely new models and movesets coming fromt he costumes.

I think I'm the only one that doesn't like this idea.
Sticking in a whole bunch of models is a little pointless and I'd rather see it as a whole character or nothing. With so much characters, having it just for some and not for others is dumb. And then in future games, they might run out of ideas and might have to pull out exsisting models as a character and I don't think it'd be easy to keep up with all of that. And if that was the case, in the end you wouldn't have this anymore.
Anyone disagree here? Maybe it's a simple, easy to do thing and I'm thinking to much.

Yes, whole new models is stupid, but extra skins I could see. Make them unlock able extras. I don't want Fierce Deity Link as a costume, but I could easily see him turning into is OoT out fit. Just things like that. Snake turning into his older self from the Metal Gear game coming also would be feasible. Or Sonic into Shadow to make all the Shadow fanboy's happy, it's just a simple recolour. Peach into Daisy in SSBM is a good example of this.

Yeah, if not in the colors, then I don't want anything. Changing the model, color and etc for team match just gets...sloppy. I doubt they'd do a 3rd party recolor, but then again, that's just a hunch from me. Glad to know someone agrees with me to an extent. Like I said, own character or none is fine with me.

All I'[d like to see added is that when i change from Peach to Daisy(or other) the game changes what it says, like they chant for Daisy, not peach. Simple, useless, but nice.

Templar has a very intricate point. Ninja Gaiden's costume would be HELLA dope!

I like this idea about changing models. Another awesome example might be for Link. Different models could alter tunic colour with X, and Y might alter which shield he is using. This would be its own equalizer as the bigger model his shield is, the slower he could move! (oh man, and also off-topic but concerning link's shield move, I think it would be sick if he could just hide under his shield instead of having some stupid pink bubble come from his center)

Yeah, unlockable extra skins would be awesome, too! Or ones that you have to pay for, like using the coin system to buy more than just trophies! Similiar to Soul Calibar w/ the unlocking of the skins!

I don't see why there shouldn't be different models... hey, in a way it's already happened. Pikachu's different "skins" actually give him hats... that's a change in the model already.
Something like Pikachu turning into Pichu or Raichu might be rather extreme... and in those cases, it would HAVE to change the actual in-game name.

Changing a character's stats through skins is a no-no, though.

No fair, you went red pika, you know red pika is better because he has faster attacks and less lag and I can't go red pika too!

No probs with changing character models a little as long as it doesn't effect gameplay (Pika's hats for example)

Hell if I know about the Zamus stuff. But adding onto what people have already said concerning recolours.

As some of you may recall there was an event that had to do with killing link. But not just any link, it was like, Shadow link or something freaking awesome like that.

I think.. that.. for every character you can beat classic/adventure mode on hard with, w/out losing any lives, for every character you can do that with you unlock their shadow costume. (where it's just everything of them is all black) how sick would that be? ^_^

Why is changing characters stats a big no-no? People are always saying they want more characters. This can be roughly translated to, more variability. Changing stats would be an easy way to add more variety to the characters. Ok, so movesets might be a bit extreme. But if they are gonna put clones in again, they might as well not bother and do this.

I personally don't see how the game could be hurt by "two kinds of shield for link" or similar.

I think I'm the only one that doesn't like this idea.

Right, we'd rather all see new characters, but sometimes they don't want to go out of the way to make them. So what if they run out of characters in future games(not like they will, more characters are being whipped up nowadays than smash could ever hope to keep up with.

Even if, god forbid, they do run out of characters, and don't do it in the future, who cares, how does that effect now? And still, how is that different from what they did in melee. Right, Doctor Mario's sex kick does more damage late in the kick, and his pills bounce differently. Those are huge changes... I forgot.

I personally think that changing stats would be where "extreme" variety begins. They are already aiming for 40 characters... might even be 50. It already took long enough to pick up 26 characters. Now, if every character had 3 alternative stats, with 40 characters, that would amount to 120 possible PCs. The team creating SSBM apparently already had a hard time balancing 26 characters... creating a tier list took a looong time... if the changes in stats were great enough, you might end up having completely different characters who are basically identical because their movesets are not all that different ( with humans, there are only so many types of moves they can do ) and their stats have been made similar..................

Hmm good point, I may have overlooked the number fo characters they are actually implementing. Could lead to some mad complications. I still think my head exploding from overload would be cool though...

Your point about tier lists - I think the ideal game would be to have all characters on the same tier - equal playing field, or near it, but of course that's impossible. I'm thinking if they have a lot of characters, it might be hard to make a tier list, but there could be so many counter characters and strategies, that no one would really "dominate"

Actually, *that's* a good point. Ike's/Whoever's sword can be as long as it may, there's BOUND to be someone who can counter it if you have enough characters. =D

As far as costumes go, it'd be nice like Mario - Doc or Peach - Daisy in terms of colour and costume, as for stats or crowd chants, no.
