Changes to Pausing

I'm not really sure if this is feasible to code, but could pausing be changed to pressing the start button twice really quickly instead of just pressing it once?

If somebody accidentally pauses in tournament because pause was accidentally not turned off, it can cause all sort of problem to the match. (It even happened at apex ' 13)

If pause were changed to just 2 presses, it would almost never be accidentally done, so this mistake couldn't happen. Also if a tournament match needs to be ended for whatever reason, instead of suiciding, pause and then end match could be used.

tournaments should just make sure that pausing is turned off. if it's not off, that's the player's fault for not checking when they were going to strike stages (in melee).

With what happened at Apex in mind, this would not solve anything, cuz he was mashing start over and over again. The reason he accidentally paused had nothing to do with him accidentally pushing start, it was because he was trying to steal a stock. In PM, stealing stocks is done by pressing A+B at the same time. Problem solved already.

I think hold start for a second to pause or double tap start to pause would be a good thing to add. Fighting Game players all want this feature in their game too, although there is no such thing as stock sharing there.
I think taking pictures isn't as important as not having tournament matches accidentally paused. Sometimes people pause accidentally even outside of stock sharing situations

Has someone ever "accidentally" paused here? The only times I can think of doing so when was I was about to die anyway, like my recovery failed or something.

I do it occasionally - I have pretty big thumbs. Sometimes when sliding too fast from A to the C Stick i'll miss and hit the start button.

personally, i've never accidentally paused. but, if it's illegal to pause during tournament play, then it shouldn't be optional, and whoever is regulating the tourney should make sure the participants are aware of the rules and ingame pause should be turned off. with that being said, having ingame pause off can lead to some pretty annoying situations, like if someone accidentally chooses the wrong stage while striking and starts the game, forcing you to have to sd 4x instead of just reseting. a hold to pause feature sounds viable, but depending on how long it takes, might kill the purpose of being able to instantaneously pause a game.

one thing i do think could be implemented is an autopause when it is sensed that a controller has been disconnected, as the user of the disconnected controller is almost always the one who is immediately aware of his/her situation but is helpless until the second person to react takes action. it's obviously possible, as the game can already tell if controllers are disconnected and take action based off what happens on the results screen when a controller is unplugged.

The only change that pausing could use would be adopting the ssb64 mechanics for unpausing. In ssb64, the camera pulled out much slower while unpausing which allowed for everyone to know where they were before the action got going again.

Okay, then to answer the OP's question, yes it technically is possible to code it so pausing is double tap of start button. However, there is no point in doing so. Your goal is to stop people from pausing during the match. You can do that already by just turning pause off in the menu.

No idea if this could be coded, but what if instead of "off", the option became this:
The game will only pause if all players hold start.
That way, matches could be reset when needed, but there could be no shenanigans.

It doesn't really... You would have a failsafe against accidental pausing without the drawback of not being able to reset...

^That's actually a good idea. I have a bad habit of pressing start when I'm surprised by an opponent's kill on me, so preventing me alone from pausing it while allowing resets without suiciding would be convenient for me. Not that that's a relevant point except when it comes to tournies, but I do think that this is pretty much the best way to handle the pause function.

I can almost guarantee that if start was pressed on a gamecube controller, it's either because that person needed a moment to recoup when they mess up an input that gets them killed, or they want to steal a stock in an extremely unfair way. Pressing that button on accident takes some serious skill. Just sayin.

Even if the no pause option wasn't there, all the TO's gotta do is say something like "Hey that ****'s gay and you're forfeiting if you do it in a way that causes you to steal a stock". It's that simple.

Double tap pausing makes sense toaster. You turn of pause not so people can't EVER pause, but so people don't do it accidentally in a tournament. At least most of the time.

I've seen people pause when mashing before, just to add that into the pot.
