Cave Story is an absolutely brilliant freeware platformer which I think a lot of you would like, and it's coming to wiiware. Truth be told, I haven't played nearly enough of it on the pc as I could never quite get it to work, but it's developed something of a cult following which is, by all indications, not undeserved.

Download the deluxe package by Wavedizzle for both PC and Mac and get your awesome on.

...Nevermind.

So yeah. Cave Story's awesome. Best metroidvania game ever (yup, better than Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night). :bee:

I started playing over the weekend; I haven't much time during the week due to classes but the abundance of save points makes it good for playing in short chunks. I'm roughly halfway through Greenwood, or whatever the stage after the Egg Factory is. Awesome game, great music.

After reading Chief_Mendex rave about this game in the Nintendo Conference thread, I downloaded it. So far it's been pretty awesome. It doesn't really seem Metroidvania-ish, though. Either way, it's a really cool game. Depending on how different the Wii version will be, I might buy it.

The term "Metroidvania" just refers to any action/adventure game that isn't separated into linear stages. Once an area's open to you, it's usually open to you for the rest of the game to explore at your leisure, assuming no plot points of story event bar your path.

So in that sense, yeah, Cave Story is a Metroidvania game. It's just a bit less focused on collecting stuff, and more focused on combat.

Glad everyone's enjoying it though. And remember, no matter what you do...always return what you borrow. :chuckle:

Isn't there also a version of this coming out for the PSP? Or at least that's what wiki says...

You can get an upgraded Polar Star if you don't accept the girl from the Sand Zone's machine gun <_<

That's just a homebrew hack. Cave Story on Wii is the first official release of the game aside from the PC/Mac freeware version, and the first time since the inital release waaaaaay back when that Pixel's been involved with his masterpiece.

Jerk.

...Though technically what I said applies to two other things... :chuckle:

I admit, I've never beaten you-know-who in you-know-where :(. I don't think I ever will by playing with a keypad.

The first time I played it I had to do it with a keyboard, which really isn't ideal. It's definitely possible to beat the game, though (unless you're talking about
Final Cave
, which I'm pretty sure is impossible to do with just a keyboard
).

But one of the reasons I'm really excited about this game coming out on Wii Ware is because I'll be able to play it with a controller that doesn't suck. I bought one of those generic USB "Game Pads", just so I could enjoy Cave Story more, and while it was definitely easier than with the keyboard...it's nothing compared to what, say, the Classic Controller could bring to the table.

No I'm talking about the part of the game people generally speed run. I could get to the end of that section but I never beat you-know-who's
third form
.

Heh, when I read that error, it made me think of the Latin word "mendax", which means liar. Not that I'm calling you a liar, the similarity is just striking and I found it funny. But I'm the only one who would actually know that, so it wouldn't be a subtle insult.
[/completely useless rant about Latin words]

Meh, I disagree that it's better than...well, definitely not as good as Super Metroid. I've only played a 20 minute demo of SotN, so I can't say whether it's better than that or not.

I will say, though, that I got a little addicted to the game and once further in it, do find it to be very awesome. Godly for a freeware game, but definitely pretty awesome as a regular game as well. (Much better than Super Mario Galaxy. *Equips Flame Shield*) I'm considering getting it for WiiWare now.

Crap. I already accepted the Machine Gun.

But you can turn it into a jetpack! How can you pass that up?! You know, even though I didn't know that when I took it.

Just downloaded the Mac OS X version recently, and I have to say that Cave Story is a wonderful game indeed. Not too far into it yet, but I've loved every moment so far. I just need a gamepad to play with, because I've long since lost my taste for playing games with a keyboard--call me spoiled on console games.

Bah. Dead language is dead.
That's still really awesome though. Very nice catch.

That's much less useful once you obtain one of the actual Boosters.

Now you know for your second run.

Or rather, you need a keyboard that's not made by Apple. Seriously, I can barely type correctly on the things--I can't imagine trying to play a game (even a simple one like Cave Story) on one.

But yeah, if you (or anyone else, for that matter) can get/already has a basic PC Gamepad, that's the way to go. Or you could just buy the game on WiiWare when it comes out, solving the problem entirely.

But, I wanna play it now! *whines*

My Macbook came with a little bit of a learning curve, but nothing too bad. If anything, I'd say that typing on this has actually increased my already considerable WPM. I just don't like playing games with the keyboard, it feels really iffy to me.

But thank you.

Well, true, it's not AS useful. But with at least the one I have now, it's still pretty useful because it's a basic one.
Either way, I don't think I could've survived the Sand Zone without it. (I flipped out every time my level dropped on the Machine Gun.)

Yeah, I think I'll probably get it on WiiWare when it comes out. I'm fine with keyboard controls -- they're always awkward initially, but usually quite good once you get used to them. Playing with a controller would be so much better, though. Also, I want to get it on WiiWare to support the creator, and possibly get improvements if the WiiWare version includes any (hopefully not too many, as the game isn't really in desperate need of improvement. Maybe just some extra features or something).

As far as I know, the only actual changes are updated graphics and remixed music. Also the font's different. The graphics aren't that different, and in fact I think I'll prefer them over the old sprites. SEE 4 URSELF:

Toroko

No thoughts on the music yet though, as I really haven't heard any of the new stuff yet. However, even if for some reason you don't like the new sprites, tunes, and font, there's an option to play the game in it's original form, with nothing new added. So we're all happy!

Cool. The improved graphics do look pretty nice, and it's great that they allow you to play it in its original form.

Wow--they're totally respecting the game in its transition. What a concept.

First Blast Works and World of Goo, now this. It's very good to see games not getting totally massacred when being ported to the Wii.

Yeah, I think this is the kind of thing that's nice to have for ANY remake or port, assuming it's possible and the games aren't too similar (if the game is massive, obviously it might be implausible or impossible altogether). Have the remade game in there, and have the original accessible in some way, shape, or form. Just like Metroid: Zero Mission did; you beat the game on any game mode, and you unlock the original Metroid to play. That way, you don't have to work hard to appreciate the original -- it's made as accessible as the remake. If they make a remake of Super Metroid, I hope they do that there too...I can't imagine they wouldn't butcher the game, just because it's hard not to butcher such a great game.

...But I'm getting off-topic. My point is, this is a great feature, allowing you to play the game in its original form, and they should use it more often.
