My 3 year old cat recently went missing, she's been gone for almost a week now so we've pretty much given up hope. The thing is, we live near a busy road, and our last cat died at said road, the cat before that died at a different traffic-related incident. Because of these three deaths of our cats, my mum really doesn't want to get a new cat in case the same thing happens. I can tell my Dad wants to get another one, just as I do, but he hasn't said anything to Mum.

Earlier today he showed me an E-mail he got from a workmate about them finding, and possibly giving away a kitten. But we don't know whether to tell Mum and hope for the best, or take it without her knowing.

I don't know how Mum would react if we got the cat, but I'm afraid she'd say no if we asked. Any opinions/suggestions?

I'd probably wait a bit longer and look a bit more for the missing cat. There will always be kittens waiting for homes should you decide to get one eventually. After all, kitten season has begun, the shelters will be booming with them. Also, waiting a bit longer might affect how your mom reacts to a new kitten. The frustration of another lost cat won't be so fresh in her mind and she might be less likely to be thinking "this is a bad idea".

Since it seems the dangers to a cat in your area are a bit higher maybe consider having a strictly indoor cat with only supervised controlled times outdoors. Its quite common for cats that spend a lot of time outdoors to have a pretty short life span, while indoor cats usually live long lives.

Whatever you decide, good luck :)
