Canada Cup is Crowdfunding a $30K SSBM Prize Pool

Announced via Facebook today, Canada Cup Gaming is pairing up with crowdfunding platform Matcherino in order to raise $30,000 for both Super Smash Bros. Melee’s and Street Fighter V’s prize pools. This is obviously big news for the Canadian Melee community, who already managed to attract top-level talent to last year’s tournament. If successful, this would make Canada Cup 2016 the second largest Melee prize pool ever according to esportsearnings.com.

For those unfamiliar with Canada Cup Gaming, they organize and host Toronto, Ontario’s premier yearly tournament series of the same name. This well-loved event frequently attracts international competitors for all featured games. Matcherino is an esports crowdfunding organization that aims to “efficiently and transparently handle donations from the community.” You can learn more about both organizations by going here (for Canada Cup Gaming) and here (for Matcherino).

Stay tuned for more updates on Canada Cup 2016, which is scheduled for October 28–30.

This is a great use of crowdfunding and I love seeing this. It's so much better than using crowdfunding to fly in top 5 players. Speaking of which,

this is awesome. Lap Chi is a top tier homie for doing this.

Canada seems to be doing a lot of things right for Melee, and that makes me happy.
