Can you imagine a Smash Bros. game directed by anyone but Sakurai?

About the red part, there is a difference between the amount of content and the quality of content. How about this for an analogy... would you be satisfied with 100 boxes with nothing but rocks or with only one box with nothing but gemstones?
99 boxes with diamonds, and 1 with carefully shaped rocks Is my answer. That's Smash 4.

This game isn't a hundred boxes of rocks, though. It's more of a large box (or a hundred boxes, whatever) mostly consisting of gemstones, but with some rocks sprinkled in.

That's completely subjective. Something you hate I might like. Something you like I may hate. I'm fine with milestones, and you clearly hate them.

But chances are they took little development time. If they didn't put milestones in, they probably wouldn't have done extra balancing.

But it is quality content...

Maybe but it is the little things that make a big difference between a positive experience and a negative experience... and that make me feel like certain content are not quality content.

I guess it is because I am pretty much satisfied with the character roster that I want to enjoy these characters in better-designed stages and solo modes. :ohwell:

To be honest, yeah I can imagine a Smash Bros by someone else who isn't Sakurai. It'd probably turn out to be a game that focuses solely on what the qualms of the vocal fans are, like "MY WAVEDASHING" and "PLS DELETE DIDDY" and it would probably leave out a lot of things that Smash is known for, for the sake of other features which revolve around said qualms. I can only assume they'd give the trophies far less detail (as far models go) they wouldn't be able to provide worthy trailers nor any interesting newcomers, or any fun stages with intricate design. It'd probably be a bit more like PM where everything is placed into already existing characters, editing stages to be more "normal" and the only new content would be a crappy theme song and a stage that looks visually horrible. I don't agree with everything Massive-Hero Samurai does, but without him Smash wouldn't have even been a ****ing concept.

I think someone else could. The SSB formula has been established at this point, so there's a solid foundation for the hypothetical successor to build on. What I find more interesting to think about is what would they do differently? Would they, unlike Sakurai have a team that makes the decisions? Would it be more casual? More competitive? Have a story mode? Rather than wonder if a SSB game could be made without Sakurai, I think the question is, what would it be like compared to the ones made by Sakurai.

That would be a good analogy if this was an awful game, but it's not. It's GOTY-level material. The game is truly remarkable overall.

I can imagine people other than Sakurai being good/competent developers, because that's a reality already, so it's not that much of a stretch.

Yes, I can easily imagine someone else being the director of future Smash games, and I hope that there will be someone replacing him. While I do appreciate the smash games so far, I think Sakurai is too Nintendo-esque in forcing his way of things, even if they are not up to date. Smash needs to evolve past the brawling game that 'the whole family can play' and should move in the direction of esports. I'm not calling on gameplay and mechanics, but simply improving online play, an easy way to host matches with certain rules for everyone, easy friend making, net stability and so forth.
No matter how the game itself is played, it should orientate itself towards online play, as 4 player on one couch action practically has been declining for years.

A Smash without Sakurai as director could be a huge hit or a terrible miss. It all depends on the director and the demographic Nintendo is going for with a new Smash. Perhaps we could get someone who wants to create a Smash just like Melee, who unlike Sakurai sees that having a fast, technical game does not drive away casual players. We could also get a director who wants to only cater to casuals, ending up with a game even more slow and gimmicky than Brawl. Point is, it all depends on the director and even more on Nintendo's desired demographic. If Sakurai continues as director, I expect the next game's speed will increase, though still not be at Melee's level. Sakurai doesn't seem to understand that competitive players and casuals players generally don't play on the same couch. If he figured this out, we may see a more competitive game in the future.

Yep, someone else can definitely make it and someone else can make it better than it was. However, all of the games Sakurai makes have his own style to them and no one can seem to duplicate it or match all of the same credentials he had in them. This is why I feel he should stop making the Smash games, he has covered all spectrum of gaming with only 4 games: for casuals, hard-core, and somewhere in between (like me). He has even admitted his parts of failures with Brawl and I feel what he produced with Smash 4 was what he has always strives to create. I think that if someone else continues to expand on the Smash series they will try and make it more for the hard-core side, but after all of this we will always look back at the ones Sakurai made and remember all of the hard work and effort he put into each and every detail and in my eyes that is what truly makes a masterpiece and to me every Smash game falls under that category.
Don't worry Sakurai it's time to take a break:bee:
(but once that break is done start on Kid Icarus and try and make that game what you wanted it to be:4pit:)

I don't think Namco being the developer and the quality of SSB4 are a coincidence, especially when the last SSB game Sakurai worked on was Brawl and we all know how THAT turned out...

It should also be noted that the Kirby games became better when Sakurai stopped working on them. Always felt like the ones he worked on were just kind of bland...

It would also be nice to have a director who doesn't blatantly favor franchises he worked on...
