Custom SSS Directory

This thread serves as a complete directory of all custom Stage Selection Screen icons, previews, stage names, game names, and franchise icons. This directory is relatively new, so, for the time being, please excuse the incompleteness and lackluster organization.

Currently, the lists are not alphabetized, but this will be done, eventually.

WARNING:These files are not guaranteed to work properly with your SSS. Many of the files on the SSS are anal about file size and will cause a freeze if they are replaced by a file larger in file size than they are. I've adjusted some of these files to a lower file size that is compatible with most stages, however, a few stages require a file size that is not possible to reach without a noticable reduce in quality. These stages are 75mm, Mario Bros, and Picto Chat. When I have my own SSS working I will post the list of vanilla file sizes that I used as reference.

Anyone who has any SSS icons, please post them here. I will collect them, combine them with my own custom icons, and organize them for download in this post.


I realize that this currently breaks posting rules, but I'm honestly not sure of a better way to go about this. After installing 20 some new and solid stages to my Brawl, I realized that only a few of them came with SSS icons. I've seen SSS icons for almost every nicely hacked stage in a showcasing video, at some point or another, but because they've never been the focus of the video, no download links were provided. It confuses me that there is no database for these icons, especially since they are not allowed to be posted alone in the brawl vault.

That's the way I use to make SSS icons.
- Take a screenshot from BrawlVault (should be without fighting characters, obviously).
- Cut a square part of it.
- Stretch it to 176x176. Now you have the MenSelmapPrevbase.
- Resize it to 176x160. Do this, so you can keep proportions and the thumbnail won't look squashed.
- Scale it down to 56x48.
- Take a random MenuSelmapIcon from your sc_selmap_en file.
- Paste your scaled down thumbnail on it.
- Do little corrections in the corners of pasted image. Remember about transparency. You have a ready MenSelmapIcon.
- Now all you have to do is to take MenSelmapFrontStname, paint it to black and write ALL IN CAPS name of the stage using Impact font. It won't be really faithful, but it won't clash so much too.
Done. You may want to clear MenSelchrMark and MenSelmapMark images with black colour so you won't get illogical linkings (like "Do the Mario" with "Donkey Kong"). Haven't tried it, though.

Just to be clear, the goal of this thread is compile a library of SSS icons, not ask how to make them. I don't think you made this mistake, but I think it would be easy to make and I want to be sure that no one else thinks that this thread's "question has been answered".

I thought as much, but I didn't want to make that accusation. After I collect what I can, I do intend to fill in the gaps of my own SSS myself; however, I want it clear that I intend this thread to be a public database of this resource, rather than a small collect for my personal use. I'll certainly be sharing what icons/portraits I make myself, when I make them. Thanks for the link

Don't worry, I've not forgotten this thread and responsibility. I'm severely procrastinating while I take care of my own selfish SSS needs, but this thread is still on my daily mind. I'm glad you pointed this out so I could verify, as I am feeling a tad guilty. When you get the opportunity, definitely post anything you have!

I've got all my stage names and icons working, but I've hit a wall with the portraits(I'm getting a freeze that I don't yet understand). I was putting off working on this thread until I had my personal SSS all working, but I suppose that's inappropriate now that I've decided to take a break from working on it. Expect the OP to be updated sometime between now and tomorrow night.

I don't think so.

I've double checked and every file is less than the file it replaces. Next time I sit down to work on this I'm going to install the previews in groups of five(and then one at a time) until I identify which file is the problem.

I imported the sc_selmap from this thread into my common5, edited it, and I haven't had any problems. Although the latest version of BrawlBox won't let me replace the whole sc_selmap at once...

Hmmmm....

Apparently my sc_selmap_en is a larger file size than it's supposed to be(which makes no sense because everything I added to it was less than what it replaced...)

My working theory is that when I replace a file it automatically gets converted to one of the weird extensions that brawl uses(like .59) and that increases its file size. I already discovered that I can't just convert everything to .jpeg to lower the file size(presumably because it gets reconverted), but I've been assuming that .png was the default format used by brawl- perhaps this in incorrect.

The information in the thread you posted appears to verify my theory.

I'll try this out sometime today and see if it fixes my problem.

EDIT: I may need to make a new thread for this. Apparently, there's a limit on how many images you can have in a single post. I met this limit very quickly and I did not reserve the posts following the OP for problems like this. I've messaged BionicSonic asking how I should proceed, but I've not yet gotten a response. I'll wait a little longer.


EDIT EDIT: I've gotten no reply from Bionic, and I realize that there's little else he could probably suggest to do. When I have some down time on campus, tomorrow, I'll make a new thread and finish uploading all the files. If I have the time, I'll work with properly organizing the information, as well.

This may be a stupid question, but, how do you insert custom Menu icons into PM? I use PM Homebrew and i would like to replace stock icons, CSS icons, and SSS icons.
