You can understand my skepticism, at first, as it is surprising.

Because after all if cloud got in (a character more associated with another console, but franchise has good history) whats stopping any other memorial characters that are deemed impossible, after ryu there was still some points that people could speculate on.
Now, Speculation is impossible. . .

There's still some possibilities, as the Final Fantasy franchise DID have a good history with Nintendo for the first six games.

If a character from a franchise with no relevance to Nintendo, like Halo or inFAMOUS, got revealed, speculation would indeed be impossible.

Although, I recall that Sakurai had mentioned him during that one Ssream a while back. He mentioned that he was aware of the requests for him and Spongebob, among others, and laughed about it.

I never caught that part of it, but I doubt the translations could've made it sound THAT different from what they were actually saying, and I heard lots and lots of news about it.
