Anyone here play backgammon?

I play regularly with my grandfather. I was just wondering if anyone here plays. Anyone play online? I play sometimes on yahoo or pogo but was just wondering whether anyone knows of any good sites or whatever.

Maybe we could get something going like the chess thread?

To quote Marshall from How I Met Your Mother:

Marshall: "It's called MarshGammon, it combines all the best features of all the best games, Candyland, I Never, Pictionary.."

Robin:"Backgammon obviously..."

Marshall:"No Backgammon sucks. I took the only good part of Backgammon, the Gammon and I left the rest of it in the trash where it belongs"

Actually it's been ages since I've played it so I might be a bit biased.

The difficulty to enjoyment ratio is pretty low. Chess is a man's game. And Risk. Risk kicks all their *****

Actually I used to play around 4 years ago...but then I dropped it suddenly and ever since I've never picked it up again.

Is there a really common backgammon site?

Honestly, I wish I knew how to play. Ive tried on yahoo but I got lost and gave up
It's quite simple.

You have to get your pieces to one side of the ''board'' where you can then collect them. First to take all their ''pieces'' gets a point. First to however many points wins. If you take all your pieces and your opponent has taken some, you get one point. If they have taken none, you get two points.

You move by rolling dice. The numbers you roll represent how many places you are allowed to move a piece of choice. Say I roll 6 and 2, I can move one piece 6 places and another 2 places or one piece 8 places. If you roll a double, you can move those many places four times.

If a place is occupied by two or more of your opponents pieces you cannot put your own pieces there. However, if there is only one you can ''capture'' them. Then, when it's your opponent's turn, they have to roll the dice to return the piece to the board. When they return, they have to go back to the start of the board, and in the place corresponding to the number they rolled.

lol I say it's simple then give the worst explanation of all time. Terminology is way off too.

I tried to learn Backgammon, but it was too hard for me...:( I think chess will do me fine.
The game is very simple. Just read rules and start playing. There are some popular strategies and tricks. As for start simply read: backgammon strategy and instructions. Play with players who have little higher skill and train yourself. In few months you will see the big difference.

it's hard to take a game seriously when it relies only on luck. you roll doubles, you win!

Welcome to the backgammon club  I'm playing already for a long time at this online backgammon room. There are thousands of players with various skills - from newbies to professional players.

Backgammon not based only on luck - this is real logical game. Usually not person who rolls doubles win, but player with higher skills. In a series of backgammon games the better player will win.

Great, so I'd have to play 100 games with someone to lessen the effect of luck and see who's truly the best, while I do this in 5 games of chess.

Though call...
