It's Australia Day and I'm not going to shut up til everybody knows it.
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE
OI OI OI!
etc.
But anyway, to steal a line I used elsewhere, today is a national day of pride where Australians world wide celebrate the popularised version of Australian culture that we like to export in every way, shape and form to the world.
Mateship, Beer, Lamb on the Barbeque, an over use of Aussie slang, that kind of thing. At the very least my family is preparing for an epic barbeque later today. Epic may not be the right word, it's more of a 5 people and a small barbeque out back on the concrete. My dad and I will probably share a beer, unless he hogs it to himself.
Sometimes days like this concern me. The way we like to push traditional Australian values onto people. We are all very quick to forget about things like the 'Cronulla Race Riots' from only a few years ago. Multi-culturalism seems like a farce sometimes, or at least a misleading term. The fact that a country is inhabited by members of different cultures doesn't always mean its a multi-cultural country.
At the same time though, Australia is a country that likes to celebrate its coming together of a wide array of cultures. I myself am half-filipino, and regularly attend various filipino-Australian events that serve to further strengthen the bond between the two countries.
I want all my Australian smashers to report in here. What are you doing today? (If you haven't already left to go on a trip to the beach or something). Where the bloody hell are ya?
Also, if you don't celebrate Australia, why not tell me about how you celebrate your country in your culture? America celebrates this kind of thing on the 4th of July doesn't it?
