As A Marth Player
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok, well. I have been maining Marth since good ol' Melee.
I can still remember the great range and grabs.
Then Brawl came out, and although some would say that Marth was nerfed, one cannot say that he has improved. So, I adapted my Marth playing style to what would be most effective in Brawl.
Ei: Weaving, Lots o' DB's.
And I can say that I am proficent with Marth. Always looking for something else to improve on and whatnot. But, of course there is always room to improve. I have to say that because of Brawl's different dynamics of playstyle that defensivness has a advantage of those who would reguarly would approach. Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying that approaching is the key to death, infact if one 'masters' the approach method it can be even more rewarding then defensive play, though it is more risky.
Now for the things that I need to improve on are clear, I still haven't exactly gotten the whole Retreating SHFF->Nair. And I could improving on learning how to grab more efficently. But I can Vertical space very well and I weave properly too.
The thing is that I am trying to jot down somethings that has been running in my mind about my Marth's metagame. Critizism and tips would be appreciated. Also for those who also are trying to constantly improve be welcome to post your own thoughts and Marth playstyles.
Kyunki's Marth (Me)
In the beginning of Brawl I was a very defensive Marth, constantly Fair'ing, DTilt'ing and trying not to get hit. Rarly would I do any risky things. I would want to keep to the right side of the map and not be put in a position that would make me have to retreat from my position, And thanks to the great IASA of Dtilt, it was easy to keep a defensive stance.
But, as time went on, I started to really get the hang of the SHFF, I started to punish and persue my enemy and forcing them back, rather then protecting myself. I gradually became more aggressive and taking more risks, but in that I became a bit reckless, often I would find myself at much high percentages of damage. I stopped using the rolling feature and was punished greatly. And after about a good month afterwards my gameplay changed again. I was still very aggressive, but I was using defensive strategy in my style too, I used the combinations of Dtilts, and Nairs a like. I basically started to change the defensivness and offensiveness of my style each game.
And I still do. So, This is where I stand. Interchanging the defensive and offensiveness of Marth's playstyle. Which I find is ruthlessly effective.
Things I need to work on and have questions about are:
Retreating SHFF Nair: I can't seem to do this, It usually ends with me doing a rising Nair, or a SHFF Bair. I can't seem to get the SHFF part if I try to retreat.
Grab releases: I found out just a couple of days ago to Stutter step after throwing the person, but it usually ends with the person airdodging or is to far away to hit.
Strife'ing: I don't know whether to roll or not out of a attack, a I seen a lot of videos where it seems like they don't roll at all. However, whenever I don't roll, I seem to get Zelda's magic hands in my face and force feed some powerful sh*t. I just don't seem to have enough time to just run out of the confrontation.
I just wanted to know if Strife'ing is important in Marth's metagame.
SHFF: Well, I am not 'bad' at this. But I can't seem to get it as fast as Junk or Kizzu. And I try to keep a constant SHFF Fairs like they do but it seems that I stop after three consecutive SHFF Fairs.
These are some of the things that I have trouble with and could use some tips on.
Sorry for not using the 'Ask a quick question' guide. But I don't get enough insight on what I ask there.
Sorry for the long post and thanks for your answers.
Anyone else who wants to add there Marth style, so that it can be reveiwed feel free to post.
