I know this is really, really early, but I thought I could start the thread for next year's Apex. (The official thread hasn't even gone up yet lol.) What are some ways we can top the attendance from this year's Apex, and hope for more international competition?

I'm also going to take this opportunity to say that I am going to Apex next year. I thought it mite b cool. :secretkpop:

Near I hope you remember the alias poll I made.

People frown upon the use of alias' in tourneys. So if you use one of your 8000 different smashboards accounts (like Skrlx) that's not Near you're probably gonna piss some people off.

Sounds cool, but I would refrain from having an actual discussion about this in this particular thread. It seems like there's a big split in the community about this.

here we go again

LOL. That's not my intention at all. "Skrlx" was some random name change I did way back when, and I never used it in smash (original name was Dair if anyone OLD SKOOL recalls). If I did go under a different name, I'd let the TOs know.

Does anyone know if the international players expressed interest in going to Apex again? I know Marijuas wants to go.

Alex is starting at a 128 cap anyways

Though being the tease that he is, he said he might remove it if enough sign up (apparently he wants to have the largest Smash 64 tourney ever eventually, for which he'd need like over 150 people to beat Japan)

So, if 128 people sign up, and there's more interest, he will raise the cap? Man.

Smashboards mobile blowz.

Edit: I suppose this thread will gain traction once we get near the date of Apex.

We're kind of at the mercy of Alex Strife when it comes to Apex, but thankfully he really likes our community. The best thing the community can do to make Apex bigger is to simply register as soon as possible. Otherwise time and resources will have to be allocated for games with more participants.

Not for a long time. People really shouldn't be worrying about Apex right now to be honest. Just keep MLK weekend open on your schedule.

Talk to OoC people to see who might want to come and keep in contact with them. Alvin seems to have been trying to contact us via the Facebook group, and Banze is doing that big tourny down in Brazil trying to get the other SA players to join.

Exposure, mostly from streaming. Haven't seen much streaming around here in a while cept for the tourny. People needa know we're around!

Okay, so I have this idea of creating a small documentary/promo vid for 64 in general and online play using footage from Apex when I go. Does this sound like a good idea? I can work out the details later, but I was wondering if it's something that sounds good to people.

Can we try for pools? I'll show up regardless but pools would be ****in sick and if we're bringing 128 people we're like bigger than almost every melee major so we freaking deserve them.

Yes, but we'll be using bracket pools rather than round robin pools. This is consistent with what every other game with pools is doing. Basically, every pool is a mini-tournament where 1st and 2nd place (and maybe 3rd/4th) advance to the final bracket.

Do up to 4th, especially if it is 128 people

If they are all 16 man bracket, it would make 32 people, perfection

Aren't bracket pools essentially identical to early rounds of a tournament? Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I don't really see the point of pools unless they're round robin.

I'm totally up for round robin pools though, I like the idea of getting more games in and avoiding the whole win the first round and then wait hours for winners round two to start (etc) problem.

for RR pools this is from alex's mouth MORE OR LESS what he said IN PERSON at ZENITH 2013:
"If I were to give you guys(speaking to us 64 guys at the time) RR pools I wouldn't hear the end of it from the other games' communities. I can't give one games' group special treatment. Everyone gets bracket pools next Apex."

EDIT:we might get RR pools if there are both adequate setups and a low attendance. but both of those things happening seems quite unlikely imo

With a bracket pool system it's possible to lose twice and still be in the tournament (ironically this is something that the rest of the FGC thinks is bogus). This is the main difference.

i think this is a great idea. i've always wanted to see an interview with isai for one thing, and there are alot of other players id like to hear from. also i think this could create outside interest for people to see THE SCENE rather than just gameplay videos that you typically see online.

p.s. i'm like 80% sure that i will be attending apex 2014!

Mr marbles has improved a lot since he started, and he's a pika main so you know. I think he'll do well at apex if he comes is all.

i hope that's a nickname for me

also i wasn't insulting him, clubdawg, i meant that it's 1-2-3-4-55-77-9999-12121212-1717171717171717-242424242424242424-33333333333333333 etc. there is no 18th. so unless we're doing a...50 elimination bracket...he cannot get 18th.

sure. however, it appears that only 6/8 get tiebreakers, and really, i guess that's all it should be. you'd have to wind up playing two more people (for 9th place, for instance), and then the two losers would need to play for 12th and 13th. and on and on down the line. and since time constraints are what all to's need to worry about, i don't see that ever really happening. it'd be wonderful, though.

my man mr marbles is gonna make them make and 18th place

I guess there's really nothing stopping all the 17th place players from doing their own little bracket/pool to determine tiebreakers. There is always TONS of downtime for stuff like that if people really wanted to.

I was definitely not serious. No point in tiebreaking past the payout slots. There is no upside to doing that.. Everyone already has '17th' place.. The best they could do is stay at 17, so why tiebreak and likely finish worse?

Dude, you've inspired me to pick up Samus as a counter to Pika. Beating Greginator and Valoem are no easy tasks.

wait cobr did that

re ****in spect

someone link me

Also bracket pools are good.

Basically the point of pools is just to play a bunch of matches in a ROUGHLY seeded setting so that you can proceed to real bracket with better seeding. Personally I prefer RR but honestly I'm not bothered about it either way; no pools at all is unacceptable though.
