As people in the Fort Worth thread already know, I am in the running to become the Arcade manager for the AnimeFEST anime convention in 2011 and, possibly, beyond.

Keep in mind that I am building the room "from scratch", but I think that I can use convention money to make it the best it can be.

The purpose of this thread, however, is to help craft the rules for the tournaments that will be offered at the convention.

SECTION 1: What will be offered as tournament games?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Super Street Fighter IV
Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 [On PS3 due to convention policy. Will tell if asked.]
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
Tekken 6
A Naruto game [console to be decided by you]
Dragon Ball Z Raging Blast 2
Dance Dance Revolution
Guitar Hero/Rock Band [version(s) TBD]

Finally, there will be speed run challenges with non-fighters throughout the weekend.

SECTION 2: What are the rules?

This is what I will need help on. I will list the games as they stand, and the items for debate in the form in a question. Current Fort Worth Classic[My tournament banner] rules will be stated after the question. You are free to debate, cleanly of course, any question that you like as long as you quote the question that you are talking about. Cut off date for all debate is July 31st, 2011 at noon Central time, as the final rule set will be formed then.

NOTE: All comments are to be taken as an advisory role ONLY! I will make the final decision based on comments received.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

- SBR rule set version 3.1 will provide the framework for the rules

Question 1: Should Metaknight be banned in BOTH singles and doubles? Current Fort Worth Classic rules state that he is banned for doubles only.

Question 2: I am thinking about changing the starter to counter pick stage ratio from 9/7 (MLG Ruleset) to something a little more manageable like 5/7. Good Idea?

NOTE: This shouldn't be a debate as to what stages should be on the list. I will make the call on the subject.

Super Street Fighter IV

- Using EVO Rules 2010. RULESET SET!

Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Unknown due to non-release. Will discuss after the game releases.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2

NOTE: Do NOT discuss the console debate! Convention policy has made my decision for me.

Using EVO Rules 2010. RULESET Set!

Street Fighter 3: Third Stike

RULESET SET!

Fort Worth Classic? I didn't know Fort Worth even had an active tournament scene. Where do you get Fort Worth Classic from?

If Metaknight isn't banned on a national level he shouldn't be banned in either singles or doubles. He's not even the best character in doubles; 3rd best tops.

So, you haven't hosted a tournament since 2007?
Yes and no. I ran a tournament in Phoenix last year. Granted, I piggy backed off Devastation that year. I haven't ran anything Smash related since 2007 due to a lack of venue.

Lack of melee makes this entire thing fail.
I'm going to be honest with you, Melee isn't a priority this year. I am building an arcade from scratch this year, and I have to make sure that consoles and lag free monitors are bought first before I start thinking about the games. The list of games in the OP is the games that I have taken a priority on offering at the arcade this year.

I think the entire gaming event will run fine without Super smash Bros. Melee being an event.

Sanji: There are several tournament directors that host each event that you're holding for Afest here in Dallas, TX. I'm sure several people here would guide you in their direction for help.

Shut your married mouth breeder

You keep saying that while our scene is still alive, two years after the fact. Third strike was released 13 years ago and is still viable

Actually, HDR and Third Strike will only have one event each, teams. Both are equally dead games, and I have to think about what brings numbers in a convention setting, HDR, Third Strike and Melee certainly do not fit the bill at the present time.

AnimeFEST status UPDATE: I talked to Robert about the arcade last week. Touched on a lot of different subjects that concerns the arcade. It was a fruitful meeting. Now it goes before the convention board to even have the department, which they should meet this week.

Here is what the con has as far as items are concerned, so that I can have a base to work with:
ITEM - AnimeFEST has - NEEDED
Monitors (in particular ASUS VH242H) - 0* - >16
Playstation 3 - 1 - 8
Nintendo Wii - 1 - 8
Xbox 360 - 6 - 8**
Playstation 2 - 1 - 5
Laptop - ? - 1
Mario Kart Wii - 0 - 5
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 0 - 8
Super Street Fighter 4 - 0 - 8
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 0 - 8
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (PS3) - 0 - 8
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection - 0 - 5
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix - 0 - 8
BlazBlue Continuum Shift w/DLC - 0 - 8
Tekken 6 - 0 - 5
Naruto Game (Game to be voted on in the AF "Back Room") - 0 - 8
Assortment of Dance Dance Revolution games - 0 - ?
Guitar Hero and or Rock Band - 0 - ?
Dance Dance Revolution Dance Pads - 2? - (at least 2 per PS2 console)
Wii/PS3 VGA cable - 0 - 16
Dragon Ball Z Raging Blast 2 - 0 - 5
Xbox 360 VGA cable or HDMI cable*** - 0 - 8

* AnimeFEST has other monitors available, but they haven't been tested for lag, so I don't trust them.

** I honestly didn't think that there would be 360s available for use by the arcade department. I guesstimated 8 because of 4v4 events that could be happening with FPS such as Halo Reach and Medal of Honor. Vote on which FPS that you would like to see at AnimeFEST this year in the "back room" (Thread link below)

*** This is in case that the monitors do not support HDMI. I know that the ASUS monitors that I requested do, but I doubt that I will get a hold of enough of them for a true lag free arcade this next year.

Okay, I thought about it and came up with this compromise as far as Melee goes. I realized that it was hypocritical to neccessarly call Melee a dead game, however the numbers have taken a sharp decline since Brawl came on the MLG circuit this year. Compare it to what Street Fighter IV did to Third Strike and what Marvel vs Capcom 3 will do to Marvel 2 once it comes out in March. The old will give way to the young as the saying goes.

However I run into a problem. I lack any Gamecube/Wii titles that will justify buying 8 ASUS monitors exclusively for 8 Wiis.

I am willing to add Melee to the tournament list(I have a memory card that I think has all of the characters unlocked so we don't need to worry about that), however the trade off is that I am unwilling to work the tournament into a Daytime schedule.

So your choice is this, either have the game at the convention to play it at night, or not have the game at all.

By night I mean that tournament start time will be about 11 PM, I think that will be one hour before the rave.

Other tournaments that will be during night time hours will be HDR, Marvel 2 Low Tier, a game mode of Medal of Honor, Halo Reach and duplicate tournaments of Super Street Fighter IV and others.

Think carefully now...

It will be held on Labor Day weekend on 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas(most likely, according to AnimeFest.org) at 300 Reunion Blvd in Dallas(near the corner of I-35E and I-30). The convention floor plans have not been finalized yet, so beyond the location of the hotel, I know next to nothing, and it will be likely next year when the convention has signed a contract with the hotel for 2011 that I will know anything.
