Mario Universe An original game idea for once (not a remake idea)

Nintendo is soon to release the 3DS. And obviously, one of the launch titles is going to be a Mario game.

For several years, I've had the notion that there needs to be a sequel to the story of the American Super Mario Bros. 2 (what the Japanese call Super Mario USA).

While a number of elements introduced in SMB2USA have featured in later Mario games (such as the Shy Guys in the various Yoshi games), the story itself has not been followed upon.

Here are some features I would like to see:
Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, and Yoshi would be the starting characters for this game. As you progress further, you can rescue, and then play as, further characters, such as Pink Birdo (who betrays Wart in order to be with Yoshi), Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, and Donkey Kong.

All 10 characters would now have some special abilities, in addition to maintaining the basic gameplay of SMB2. For example, Donkey Kong can pound the ground and send shockwaves that kill incoming enemies, in addition to revealing secret locations. Rescuing the 5 latter characters I mentioned would be required to complete the game 100%.

Birdos now come in several new colors as end-of-stage bosses:
Light Blue and Dark Blue: Both would shoot balls of ice that would freeze Mario and the gang. In addition, the former would shoot eggs, while the latter wouldn't (Mushroom Blocks would be needed to defeat them instead).

Yellow and Gold: Same as above, but shooting balls of electricity that temporarily paralyze players instead.

Pink Birdo, once rescued, would learn to shoot fire, ice, and electricity balls in addition to her eggs.

Of course, this title might be big enough to be on the Wii as well. In any event, discuss.

I think having so many characters wouldn't be such a great idea. The more characters you have, the less refined each one will be. Plus, they would have to make each level so boring and homogeneous to make sure that each character can get through with their abilities.

plus, it's just wrong to play as Birdo.

Birdo does need to come back, though. She was the cutest villian I had ever seen. I think the idea isn't bad, but too many characters will make it ..complicated.

Even though Birdo has had her direction changed in recent years (if you've played some of the recent Mario spin-offs, you'll get what I am saying)...

Yeah I agree with the too many characters wouldn't be a good idea myself.

Also, Birdo was a man, then they turned it into a woman...then I don't know if it was in SSBM or SSBB but the description says it's "undeterminable" or something like that. So honestly, no one knows at this point, but if they say "she" it recent games then I guess it's a she.

Nintendo tries to ignore SMB2 because it's not a real Mario game. Music from the game never gets remade into new games, Shy Guys seem to be suck in Yoshi's Island and Mario party exclusively, Birdo barely gets more attention than Waluigi. You get the idea.

If it were not for SMB2, we wouldn't have certain aspects of Mario games. Like a life meter, being able to take your time in the 3D platformers (like in SMB2), Peach being able to float in Smash Bros., you get the idea.

Bob-Ombs originated from Super Mario Bros 2 (as did Shy Guys and Snifits, but we've pretty much said that already).

And yes, having that many characters would kill level design potential.
