As far as I know, almost no one uses Sheik in top level play for some reason. Which is odd, considering that she is one of the better characters to use. Much more so than say Captain Falcon.

RIGHT.

how can this have escaped people's

eyes? that IS very weird.

i remember merek saying once something about sheik

being hard to play at high levels of play, but who knows

what that was about.

sheik IS hard to play at high levels

shes easy to be good at though, and just get by

same goes for marth imo

I'd say the best characters in the game if used to their fullest potential are Falco, Jiggs and Fox

jason: james and mike told me you had that copy for some reason
james and mike: where is the melee that you took from my house

drephen is a good sheik

Unless someone left it at my house, then no, I do not have your copy of melee.

I think I left my controller at Kira's last weekend. It should have a sticker on it that says Matt Plus.

Also I spent a good 45 minutes today practicing ATs in Melee, and I'm getting better at them.

hey guys, what does it take to be amazing?

also @kira, its great that you're improving and listening to what we say and all that. but i feel that you can also take it up a notch by watching combo videos and matches. like watching armada, or other pro peach players. you can get ideas and inspiration from them. if you see something that you like, and think its really cool, try it out the next time you play.

i guess the same advice can go for matt+

it helped me improve cuz at the end of It takes guts to be amazing, that fox lived FOREVER. also i kinda know how to DI now so my link's been living up to like 200% ("JUST DIE ALREADY!" - james, lol)

alternatively, watch caleb, jason and Ean, they are really flashy players and pull off some really cool ****.

regardless there are somethings that you just have to learn on your own such as lcanceling. which im still having problems with... w/e, ill get it down eventually

this is also a habit i notice in a few people, including myself and i need to work on. adrian, kira, and matt+. lets say u and other player are at 130% and the other guy gets the 1st killing blow on you, and you come back and ALL you focus on is getting that kill on him. its bad because the other person is going to be playing ALOT more defensively and you're less likely to be able to get ur normal killing move on him. instead, take ur time, try and get him in a combo and end it with a killing blow rather than just spam it for the next 2 mins and constantly get punished for it. ur already a stock behind and thats the last thing you need. something i notice and i need to work on it myself. anyways, moral of the story, patience is key.

for those who've been wondering and like wanna learn edge teching. it helps to see things in frames, and know your opponents characters, theres only so many things he can do to edgeguard you, most poeple go for spikes and those are really easy to predict. different moves have different frame window oppurtunity to tech. IE its easier to tech falcon's Dair than it is to tech roy's NeutralB lurking. in addition theres 2 different options that you can do while teching. theres neutral where u just tech off the wall and drop, or if you DI towards the stage while doing so you tech and do a wall hop. i find it easiest to tech with falco and fox, but thats just me, i see jason and caleb tech some cool stuff with CF as well. basically anything that hits the edge in order to prevent you from grabbing it is techable. however, you have to beware of certain moves IE fox/falco's Dsmash which hits just slightly further than the stage and is untechable, so even if you try and sweet spot it, it will still hit you. however thats the only move i know of thatdoes it. on that note, sweet spotting is something you should always try and go for if you cannot make it back directly on the stage IMO.

while on the subject of recovering, i need to learn how to avoid getting gimped while falco, DI and teching can only get me so far. what more is there i can do to improve my recovery game with falco? and of course ill also take advise on link recovery too... although i think i got his down, with link i can do so much, bomb trick, chain, regular, i can throw gadgets to keep my opponent clear...
i dont see anyone posting advice to my various questions here...

the power strip is mine, you guys can use it for the time being though

i have a solution to this whole, everyone having everyones ****.

next smashfest, everyone, being EVERYTHING smash related you have ever own, that means, controllers, games. w/e. and we'll divvy it up fairly! yea!

also, Matt, thanks for the stoneblood flasks, when i got those i was like OMFGNOWAITHISISSOCOOL!!!!!!

mike: i didnt see the 2nd part of your post till now
like what you were saying about being patient when trying to get a kill
yeah a lot of people fall for that, for instance whenever i get a kill off you, whenever you come back you always either seem to do a forward smash or a backair or something, so I always sheild, and you never seem to grab me. i think you need to utilize falcos grab more, both when aiming to get a kill and when comboing. like if i was fox and at 100% and I just killed you you could easily grab me out of my sheild and either downthrow (because fox can't tech falcos downthrow) to down/forwardsmash (depending on how i DI) or do an upthrow to a downair/backair/neutral air.
also about the being way too aggressive after a death
a lot of people have that problem i wasnt singling you out or anything

yeah those flasks were amazing mattS
they were like 700g total or something on Tich

ya i know, i noticed that in myself and other people like i said. and ill try the grabs... i guess its just a link player mindset that grabs = punishment, gotta get rid of that when mi playing falco.

also 700 GOLD??!??!?!? inflation much? jesus christ...

like whats cool about falcos grabs, especially against fast fallers and ESPECIALLY fox is that you can alternate grabs based on what you think that they think you will do.

like if u downthrow fox, regrab and downthrow again he will probably DI for another downthrow, in which case you could do a backthrow and his DI wont be for a backthrow and you can combo off of that

same for upthrow

the video meant for james was actually pretty informative i never knew to do that lol

@Mike Yeah I agree, I'll try to work on that. I get all this anxiety when I fall a stock behind but I guess that makes it even worse to try to even it out so quickly.

Just so you guys know adrian hid another tourney from us. Whatever, I had a great time this weekend anyways, I'm just mad because apparently there were other people interested in playing there that aren't in the community.

From now on hiding a tournament so you can win it is called "pulling an Adrian" btw.

I'm looking into rentals for a legit venue. It MAY be possible, but the costs would be considerable.

Hotels are almost completely out of the question, so I received word to look into recreation centers. The cheapest one I could find was in Fairview. To rent the large cafeteria-style room (would have sound, a projector, etc. although we'd still need to bring our own TVs), it would cost $50 an hour. I'm estimating the tournament would run about 4 hours if we can really move things fast, hence... $200 rental overall. (There is also a cleaning deposit you have to pay but that is refundable if everyone takes care of their crap.)

So, here's the math:
$50/hr x 4 hrs = $200
$5 venue fee per person
x estimated 15 attendees = $75

...wouldn't really begin to cover it. But I don't think people would pay more than $5 for a venue fee, as we'd be having a cash-pot fee of $5 or so too. So here are the options.

Run multiple events at the same time, like Brawl and Street Fighter. (we'd have to have brawl to get more scrubs to come and help cover the rental fees, lawl.) Charge a $5 venue fee PER EVENT or else charge a flat fee of $10 just to get in the door. But I don't know if people would pay that.

Let's say we could double our attendance by having Street Fighter, since that might bring in another 15. That would mean we make $150 towards rental fees, but we'd still be losing $50 out of someone's pocket.

I don't want to do a tournament at someone's house. I want to do something big enough that we can actually get other people to come, and they will only come if it's in a legit facility.

Maybe we could fundraise in order to get a venue. Bake sale, car washes, hmm.

What to do?

i can hook us up with UAA venues, 35 bucks or so... or we can use kinkaid park chalet

http://www.muni.org/Departments/parks/Pages/ParkDistrictSW.aspx

http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/studentunion/reservations/upload/SURentalRates09.pdf

or we can use my ****ing garage.

anyways, i think its ridiculously small with the numbers we have now we shouldnt be doing anything big and costly. rather we should focus on events that are already happening such as arctic attack, agc, and senshicon to attract people into our community. perhaps start a video game club at UAA, and then work our way up from there. boosting numbers 1st should be our priority, also lets get some asian chicks up here. thats my opinion.

that 200+ dollars could be used to better the melee community at another one of the cons you know?

i dont mean to rain on your parade here, but thats just my opinion...

But it's not the same; it would feel more like a smashfest than a legit tournament. I want to do something kind of big.

I think that you are confused on the actual definition of troll there adrian, because as a matter of fact it does NOT apply to each and every thing someone says against you.

kira, we cant do something big right off the bat. baby steps. lets plan this out, if we can make money doing garage tournaments, we can slowly expand and get larger and larger venues. things dont happen overnight.

but as of right now 15 people just isnt enough. we need fresh blood

alternatively, you can suck my **** and ill pay for venues.

This is not welcome in the thread, please. I'd advise both of you to keep personal issues out of the community.

Hiding a tournament isn't a personal issue. I was defending myself from him calling me a troll as a result of reporting something that should be known. That post was unneeded.

Also I don't see why we can't find a happy medium mike. Nothing is black or white, it's all just shades of gray.

also, james leave matt alone, adrians just as much at fault, and i dont see you yapping at him

@Fangie

if you're talking about Malco, I don't think he has anything garenteed from any throws on sheik or marth.

you have to just pressure them and see what you can do. The cool (or not cool) thing about Falco is that

he doesn't have any chaingrabs. No garenteed kill setups. You always have to use pressure to get your

stock.

And about recovering with Falco, just look at it this way. At high levels of play, if your opponent gets you off the stage,

in most cases, you are DEAD, no matter WHAT you do. So the only way to prevent that is not getting offstage. Knowing

how to tech and stuff is cool, but knowing better spacing and just generally knowing how to play is more important.

And you will only really make it back to the stage alive as link if your opponent doesn't know the matchup. Just one of

the reasons he's not good. Recovery tends to matter little in how good a character is.

@Maleb

and I've been thinking that about Falco, too. I'm likely missing something but it seems to me that a

character that forces the enemy to do what they want must be alongside with Fox. That tier list is old

stuff anyway. Like I dunno. I've been watching Falco videos and it just seems that he is about as good as

Fox if you space right. His laser is just sooooo good.

Like this match.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7bE9ll9Xg4

Like I said. I find it hard to believe that a character that has that much control isn't among the VERY best.

Like, Mango only died when he ****ed up and got overly aggressive.

Maybe I don't know enough about the game. That was FD, after all.

@Numbers

Christ. The man is playing to win.

@Orry Watts

oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU I THINK ORRRYYYYY WWAAAAATTTTSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

alright guys,, there are 4 events that are coming up in the next 6 months that we as smashers should prepare for. by prepare i mean, organizing in a way that can bolster our numbers. First and foremost is the all day smash that me, james and ean were suppose to be planning. second would be Alaska Gaming Convention, third would be arctic attack, and fourth would be senshicon. These events are crucial because they are basically a huge gathering of nerds.

First is the smash community's tournament day. Do we have a name for this yet? if its gonna be an entire day dedicated to smash, i think it should get a name, that way it will hopefully become tradition and we can do this annually, and keep the community alive, you know what i mean? it seems that we already have a date set, which is the 1st saturday of the new years. now we need a venue, which was suppose to be at wayne's world? James and Ean didnt really get back to me on that, so i will talk it out with them later. As smashers, we need to advertise this like ****ing 2012 and swine flu COMBINED, to gather people in. if new people show up, introduce them, im thinking like cards or little advertisement cards that show off like a youtube/combo video of us playing (cold finger johns?) and a link info to this site.

Second will be the Alaska Gaming Convention. this convention will be showcasing basicaly... everything. heres a copy pasta of an email braxton send me of the latest updates about it.

Admissions will be $5 dollars. That includes playing the tournaments too.
Events: Cos-Play, Name that Character and Name that Tune. Video Game Quiz is a possibility.
Tournaments: Golden Eye and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

As of right now, its just Smash brothers brawl because it seems to be the most popular, however im sure if me, kira and Ian were to talk to braxton we can throw in a melee event in there somewhere... again, we need to be there to advertise, word of mouth, spam email, w/e, you know the more poeple the better, plus if the smashers were more willing to help out with this convention we would most certainly gain our own little "division" of the convention as time goes by.

Third order of the srsbizniz is Arctic Attack. http://forums.alaskagamers.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2087&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=arctic+attack that is the link to it. Arctic Attack is a little thing that is being planned by AGC, and they plan on including smash. I personally would LOVE to step in and just run the smash department, but thats what we have kira for. however at this point in time i dont know much about it so anyone on good terms with banky, im guessing Ean, talk to him about this, and get us in there!

Fourth would be senshicon. Now this is a huge wildcard. The con might go for 2 days, it might not. However if it does go on for 2 days, it might profit for us, because then we'd be able to have a melee as well as a brawl tournament. Again, being there not only for competing, but bolstering our numbers and advertising our community. Also, maybe have a set up showcasing Cold Finger Johns.

Now, i think as winter vacation goes on, we need to get a combo video up and done before the new year. i say this is a good and accomplishable goal, dont yall think? At major smashfests we should start bringing recording equipment, doesnt have to be eans fancy stuf, although its preferred, even digital cameras will do i guess. start recording, because ive notice a huge influx of skill recently and i think its a great time to capture our matches. I think if we divvy up the work between Ean, James, Me and Caleb we should be able to handle this project fine.

In addition, Swamp has basically given up on the smash documentary. i have a camera and im willing to pick up where he left off. I believe it should be part of cold finger johns, but some people think it should be a separate thing. its a work in progress, as soon as ill write a screenplay and put it up on here soon.

Anyways, these are all just sugestions on what we can do to improve this community with what we have. if anyone else has any ideas, questions, comments, disagreements, PLEEEEEASE dont hesitate to post it on here but dont be a troll about it. I think its time we start having some constructive criticism. I hope everyone takes the time to read this post as well :p

Getting more people is going to be harder than you think. people wont play melee because of brawl,in there eyes its a newer updated smashbrothers game. the problem with brawl/brawl tournies is the large group of players that wont play brawl unless its any stage+ items. none of you saw the dissapointment in these people at friendly fire and mountain view tournaments, they all complained about how there wasnt any items or smash ball and how they where only allowed to play on 4 stages. expect alot of these people to show up after you advertise to the whole universe.

new melee players will be rare and trying to get new brawl players to accept competitve brawl wont be easy. we can only hope that a handful of players with an open competitive mind show up.
