I saw some video of this yesterday, didn't flock of geese fly in front of the plane get caught in the engine and force the plane to go down? The pilot has some insane emergency landing skills that's for sure.

Yeah I saw this on the news yesterday too. It's a refreshing glimmer of light in a world that's filled with too much bad news.

Definitely an amazing pilot. Lost both engines, turned around to line the plane up with the Hudson River, and avoids hitting the George Washington Bridge by just 900 feet. A tip of the hat to pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger.

mmm birds take revenge to pwn the skies and kill hundreds of people :(
So, somehow you managed to skip past the title of this topic yet you read something about the birds...

Also, I know it's awful, but I giggled when I heard about this.

What the hell? Would you have giggled if everyone on the plane had DIED?
Anyways, it's good to hear. Amazing that the plane didn't break up as it landed.

Birds break planes all the time! I worked at an airline, and had to file reports about it like, 4 times a day. We call them Birdstrikes.

♣ Did I just read something that was supposed to be funny? I can't tell whether it's that or just offensive, mindless, idiotic babbling...

Anyway, this is really good news. Glad to know everything went well. ♣

I know it's bad, but every time I think about this story my mind goes to the flight attendant scene from Tommy Boy.

Its good that they all survived though.

I don't know why everyone is calling him a hero. He did a good job, but that was it. He did his job.
He's a hero because he stayed calm and saved lives. He thought of the passengers instead of himself.

You don't have to have utility belt and a cape to be called a hero. I'd like to hear your definition of what makes a hero, because it sure as heck isn't superpowers.

Because I'm sure there are a lot of pilots that could have botched it up. This guy really had a handle on it. There are a lot of plane crashes where everybody dies. He managed to crash land and save everyone on board. If you were on that plane, wouldn't you want to thank the pilot? What if somebody you knew were on that plane? Or would you do the usual that goes on when deboarding a plane? You know, where the captain and crew stand at the exit and say "thanks" or "have a good day" to everyone as they exit the plane, and you just walk by and maybe say "you too" or nod and smile or do nothing.

I'm just saying, what he did merits more than just acknowledgment.

Well, the weird thing is:

Why is it a MIRACLE that everything went as planned? I mean, each of the people who contributed to the success was TRAINED in doing so. So, they did their job. It isn't a MIRACLE that a bag of chips falls out of a vending machine, that is what it is SUPPOSED to do.

A lot of things could have gone wrong in bringing a plane down in a river, close to a bridge, without engines, facing the wrong direction relative to the river.

All pilots are "trained" to deal with such things. How many of them successfully pull it off? How many things could have (and did) go wrong? Now I wouldn't use the word "miracle", but I would attribute this success to the ability of the pilot. This is not a bag of chips falling out of a vending machine.

Besides, I'm not sure why some people seem to think "heroic" and "it was their job" are mutually exclusive. Just because something is your "job", does not mean you cannot be praised as a hero for doing it.

Firefighters? It's their job. But are you honestly going to say they don't deserve recognition as heroes for what they do? Not all "jobs" are created equal, and the nature of some jobs or aspects of some jobs is such that those who do them deserve recognition for it.

I didnt say i wouldnt be thankful or be grateful to the guy. But he's not a hero. He was trained to do that, if he didnt do it, he would have failed his job. He did a better job than most pilots would have, but to me a hero is someone who does a self-sacrificing act to help others. It didnt cost him anything to do his job...correctly.

Silly cynical Peeze! He so cra-zay!

Pretty sweet landing for a plane with 2 ****ed engines. I bet the pilot feels proud.
