Being able to play Smash anywhere is pretty awesome. I usually play Smash Bros. in a large group of friends and the first person defeated has to switch out. Thanks to the 3DS version, even if I have to switch out, I can still play and practice Smash Bros. to my heart's content.

Should be noted that the 3DS version is BASICALLY going to look like it's running at a HD resolution.

People think higher resolution is basically everything, when in reality, size of a screen effects how well a resolution looks on it. Running 1080p on a screen the size of a 3DS would look INCREDIBLY jagged. The 3DS's top screen looks crystal clear, because the resolution games are displayed in is designed for that size of screen. Vita is a similar case.
The FEEL of HD...seriously. 3DS screen is too small, and the 3DS XL screen which is 90 percent bigger looks pixelated because it renders the same total number of pixels.

Everybody already knew all that, but no other mobile device renders in nearly as low a resolution in 2014, screens have to be tiny to look good, especially on a system that has some deficiencies compared to even the Gamecube. It's not the primary version, but it's a good cash flow, however it diverts resources from the Wii U version.
It's not about resolution, it's about pixel density. If the 3DS was 1080p it would be pushing an unreasonable amount of pixels for little-to-no visual improvement and would likely cost like 10x as much.

The 3DS already has a SIGNIFICANTLY higher pixel density than a 50 inch 1080p TV. How many people do you see complaining about the quality of their 1080p 50-inch TV? Zero. Yet our little handheld here has 3x as many pixels per inch and people are calling it low-res. What? Even the 3DS XL still has twice the PPI of that same TV.

Obviously in a world full of "Retina Displays" it's not going to hold up, my Droid DNA has 5x the pixel density of the 3DS... But how much does a Droid DNA cost? Like $600 dollars. For a device I can pick up for $150-200 dollars that Nintendo wants to pull some kind of profit from, this is no slacker.

Being able to take it and play it anywhere is a pretty solid advantage over the console version, it will be a great game to take to tournaments, meetups, conventions and whatnot.

Here's 1: controls aren't wireless. In theory the 3DS version would have less input lag than the Wii U version.

There's gonna be 2 major problems for me on the 3DS version: The Circle Pad and the L/R buttons.

When I play console Smash, I tend to use the side of the joystick rather than the top of it for tilts and Smash attacks. Because the Circle Pad severely limits side-pushing, my thumb's gonna be slipping all over the place. Yes the circle pad has a gel grip, but it's not ridged like the GC controller is and you'd be surprised how much that extra grip helps when you're in tourney place and your hands are getting sweaty.

The placement of the L and R buttons are a problem as well. Because the 3DS has such a slim build, my index fingers have to be awkwardly placed on top. It's okay for short periods of time, but not in a game like Smash where my fingers are gonna be sitting up there the entire time and using those buttons constantly. When I play Mario Kart 7 for example (a game that heavily relies on the shoulder buttons), my hands start to cramp up after awhile, and the more I use the shoulder buttons, the faster my hands start getting uncomfortable. The XL may help alleviate the problem a bit, but the XL isn't that much thicker in build if at all.

I'm very certain that we will be seeing more stages from non-3DS games. Earthbound for example will likely get a stage based on Mother 3 which was a GBA game. F-Zero also had that one GBA game that they will probably use. We might see a Metroid Prime Hunters stage too and maybe even a stage based on Pokemon Black and White or Heart Gold and Soul Silver etc.

I do hope we get to see some more non-3DS game based stages sometime soon though.

We still need to see a 3DS version stage for a few characters - Sonic, Mega Man (he might not get one though, at least not based on a handheld game, as there are not many Classic Mega Man handheld games), Donkey Kong, Samus, Kirby, and Fox. So there is still a lot of potential for stages, not to mention there are characters we've not seen yet. I wonder what would make for a good Layton stage, if he made it in. There's a lot of potential there.

There's a sort of sub-franchise of the NES games on the gameboy, actually, up to Mega Man V, they could take some things from those.

I really want to see some handheld Metroid stages, they should totally show Metroid Fusion some love!

I kinda thought that Adventure Mode tease from one of the Pics of the Day looked like it was kinda-sorta from Metroid Fusion.

Portability. That's enough for me.

These seem to be a common "advantage" that people say, but...

...this is a really interesting one. Now, I haven't laid hands on the WiiU pro controller yet (since, odds are, this is what we'll be using for competing) does anybody know if there is input lag with it?

Gosh I'm glad somebody else is speaking out about this. I actually wear a bike glove to play Mario Kart 7. I'm 100% serious. When holding an item behind me, my hand really cramps up and I accidentally release the item. Not sure why Nintendo went for this. The 3DS has so many design flaws. Does anybody know if the circle pad pro alleviates this? Because I am under the impression that is makes the system slightly thicker. (never used it before)

Being a fan of Nintendo's handheld games the most, I'd like to see stages from Yoshi's Island DS, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Party (not exactly handheld-exclusive :p), Pokemon Red, Mario Kart Super Circuit, F-Zero GP Legend (Red Canyon?) and the NES/SNES ports from GBA. So glad we're getting a Mario 3D Land, Spirit Tracks and Mario Kart 7 (Rainbow Road) stage.

To me, only portability. I'm a sucker for aesthetics, so I'm picking up the Wii U one First.

Technically, Wii U is a little bit portable, I bring mine to school once a week during downtime to play on just the GamePad screen. Also, while I don't think this will happen, it would be cool to have the 3DS version also play on the Z axis. Not totally 3D, like Mario or Zelda games, but like you can move between two or three "layers" of the stage. Kind of like in Kirby: Triple Deluxe or A Link Between Worlds. And to keep it still mostly the same as Wii U gameplay-wise, maybe just limit that mechanic to a couple stages, likely based off K:TD, or ALBW.

How is this possible? When I get 10 feet from my WiiU, I can't do anything. Are you saying that you bring the entire console?

Probably.

I've contemplated bringing my Wii U into college. It's smaller than my laptop.

But I probably won't ever bring it to a public place.

I've thought about bringing my Wii U into a McDonalds or something just long enough to download something big. My connection at home is not fast enough to download anything past about 1GB feasibly, plus I have a limited amount of data each month.

I don't really think portability is an advantage since the Wii U itself can technically be portable, especially when Smash will feature Off-TV Play. StreetPass, customization, and other content are probably the only advantages when done right.

Wii U is not portable in the sense that I can't play it at the bus stop or whatever. And I don't think I'm going to carry it into public places either.

Pretty much. Basically, the 3DS is "more" portable than the Wii U in a way. Still, it's not much of a full advantage over the other.

It is, because I can easily take it out of the house.

Granted, this only matters if you do go out of your house often. I could use the 3DS version right now though. I play Melee, Brawl, and Project M in college via Dolphin on my laptop when I have nothing else to do, but I'm generally just fighting random CPUs for no reason (as I have no need to re-unlock stuff). It'd be great to have a brand new game to play and progress in, though. Hopefully the game is out not too long into my second year.

Actually, the 3DS is much more portable than the Wii U, since you need a power outlet for the Wii U to play on.
Yeah you can fit the 3DS in your pocket whereas you need to bring a bag or aomething just for your WiiU.

As for tournaments, the 3ds can make things more enjoyable by doing a swiss styled tourney and everyone gets to play lots of games

What does "Swiss styled" mean? Does it mean that people can play friendlies on 3DS while others play actual matches on the WiiU? If so, that's what I was thinking of.

Seeing that more people own 3DS than Wii U, that means more people to find matches with.

As for the controller, it's gonna be hard to adjust to. IMO fighting games aren't as fun on portable consoles as they are on home consoles, to me at least. I tried playing Street Fighter IV on the 3DS and it felt awkward to play.

It's pretty much people get to play matches the entire tournament. First round, everyone plays someone, then all the winners get 1 point. At the beginning of every round you play someone who has the same amount of points as you do, so players with 1 point play each other while players with 0 points play each other. Then, the winners get 1 point. So now you have players with 0, 1, or 2 points. This process continues until one play has the most points and does not tie with anyone

For me the advantages are the portability but also the different stages. And I do have the feeling that Smash Bros 3DS will have tons of singleplayer missions, modes, probably minigames (though I don't know how they would look, just think of something like the trophy game from melee or brawl) and Smash Bros Wii U have a big online mode, very good graphics, multiplayer fun but less of the singleplayer things.

Like somebody said before, I think both versions will make you buy the other one to have the complete experience. And I really love that.

Too bad we don't get cross play or different characters on each system. This would have been fantastic!

Portability and 3D depth.

The 3DS has three advantages:

1) It is portable.

2) It is coming out sooner than the Wii U version.

3) It has Smash Run.
