I live in France so I usually play on PAL Melee on my GameCube. That being said, I want to try to play in 480p on my LCD with my Wii. The only way to play 480p is to play NTSC Melee.

So here is my problem: which version of NTSC Melee is the most common in the US? Is there an official tournament version? I'm guessing it's either 1.1 or 1.2, but I seem to remember m2k using the superjump glitch with Link at a tournament, so it may not be the latest.

Does somebody know for sure?

Gameplay

Version 1.0

All glitches exist, including one that can overwrite Multi-Man Melee scores.
If you play one of the clone characters, lower scores can overwrite higher ones, and if you play a clone then a regular character, the score can duplicate itself on other characters.
Bowser can Flame Cancel by landing during the ending animation of the Fire Breath
In HRC, the track ends at 4990.0 ft., and if the bag isn’t already on the track when you strike it with the final attack and it goes over 4556.9 ft., it will say No Distance. In Japanese language it will start to say No Distance from about 890 m.

Version 1.1

Bowser can’t Flame Cancel and it is easier to DI out of rapid hit attacks such as Pichu’s forward-smash.
Home Run Contest track was changed to 4990 m. long, but the bag can’t land anywhere past 11347.2 ft or 3458.5 m.
The Shadow Glitch was removed.

Version 1.2

The MMM glitch was fixed, the Superjump Glitch was removed, and many other glitches were corrected.
The announcer now says “A New Record” in Multi-Man Melee

PAL - All changes in 1.2 are present, but there are many more changes.

Bowser, Kirby, and Yoshi are each heavier.
Marth, Fox, and Mario are each lighter. This puts Marth below the weight threshold of standing up during Fox's shine.
Falco's down aerial only spikes for the first half of the animation. The rest sends the opponent slightly up.
Sheik's up aerial isn't as strong. In addition, it has one less frame of hitbox lag.
Marth's down aerial is a Meteor smash and in Home Run Contest it sends the sandbag straight down with the bat drops.
Fox's down and forward smashes are less powerful.
Fox's up smash weakened, damage dropped from 18% in NTSC to 17% in PAL, knockback dramatically weakened, for example, in PAL-version Peach would die to Fox's Usmash at as high of a % as 83%, whereas in the NTSC version Peach only needs to be at 70% for her to Blast away as a screaming star.
Yoshi's forward smash is more powerful.
Peach's dash attack is less powerful.
Luigi's neutral aerial is less powerful.
Ganondorf's down aerial inflicts less damage, from 22% in NTSC to 21% in PAL.
Ganondorf's forward aerial has dramatically decreased in terms of knockback, in PAL his back aerial is more powerful.
Yoshi's down aerial inflicts less damage, from 44% in NTSC to 36% in PAL.
Fox's forward aerial has more range on its hitbox.
DI on Sheik's down throw has been changed so that it can no longer chain throw consistently.
Fox can tech out of Falco's down throw in PAL.
Link's spin attack is no longer a semi-spike.
Bowser's down throw can hit Mr. Game & Watch.
Link's super jump glitch was removed.
Samus's extended grapple beam was removed.
The Ice Climbers glitch was removed.
Lag and loading times have been reduced.
The 'Special Movie' was removed.
In Home-Run Contest mode, the platform is longer and the invisible backwall is a bit farther.
Language

PAL
The NTSC version allows changing between English and Japanese, while the PAL covers 5 languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
Names can now include upper and lower case letters but no Japanese character set.
The Motion Sensor-Bomb is called Proximity Mine.
In the English language setting, distances are measured in meters.

Character names

All the characters' names are the same in English, Italian and Spanish. Characters not mentioned are the same in English. English French German
Young Link Link Enfant Junger Link
Mewtwo MEWTWO Mewtu
Jigglypuff RONDOUDOU Pummeluff
Pikachu PIKACHU Pikachu
Pichu PICHU Pichu

Notes
In the French versions of both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pokemon names are in ALL CAPS, as well as being changed. In the German version of SSBB, the names are in ALL CAPS as well.

does it matter which one is used more in the US? both look like they hardly effect gameplay but 1.0 for haarder SDI and flame cancel would change a few things I guess

This, it makes very little difference unless Bowser or Zelda is on the screen lol

In my quote on version 1.2, it says that "many other glitches were corrected. "

I guess it's kind of important to know if you are playing a version where the physics are a little different. But the reactions so far make me think that nobody cares or knows. So I'll go with version 1.2.

If you play Bowser or Zelda, get 1.0.

Otherwise, it seriously doesn't matter. SDI is the same except for extremely weak hitting moves, as ShootingStar said.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think playing any version of NTSC is going to make it possible to play Melee on an LCD tv without lag.

As far as I know, it doesn't change anything to the fact that the game will lag anyway. It won't change anything to the way you have to play.
I'd actually advise you to play PAL, as it is the version which is used during French tournaments.

BTW, where are you from ? Are you registered on the French Melee boards ?

I've always wanted to know, in what situations is flame canceling actually useful?

I could've sworn that in both versions 1.0 and 1.1, you can Flame cancel, and you cannot SDI attacks that do less than 1% (Ylink and Samus up-b's, etc.). Have I been wrong this whole time?

@Bones0: I finished my setup, and as I was expecting, it doesn't lag at all. Lagging is the result of people not understanding the many technologies/variables involved (wii or GC?, which console region?, which game region?, progressive or interlaced?, if GC: digital out?, digital or analog?, which analog?, which cables?, adapter?, which display?). You can pretty much make any combination, and that makes it real hard to understand what you are talking about. I had to document myself to an incredible extent to understand some of it.

@Slhoka: again, it doesn't lag. Also, I don't play NTSC because I want to, I play it because I need to. PAL Melee can't output a progressive signal, and my LCD will not work with interlaced. So I thought while I'm at it I would choose the most recognize version.

And actually, I'm from Toulouse, but living around Paris at the moment as I study at the UTC (Compiègne). I don't understand your question concerning my being registered on the French boards. Isn't my account the same on all smashboards.com sub-boards? I've been to one tournament so far by the way, in the South. I looked for players in my school, but it seems that nobody likes it that much </3

Interesting. I'll try to document myself to see to what extent we can make use of it.
Oh and in my previous post I forgot to say that you would have a lot of trouble finding an 1.0 NTSC version in France. I had to go though 10-15 stores in Paris and ask to see their Melee discs to finally find a 1.0 one.

As far as I know, there are no players at the UTC.
Regarding the french boards, I was refering to www.cubeforum.fr. That's where you can find the French Melee community.
Which tournament did you attend ?

1.2 is the most common version. But people bring different versions to the tournament. It doesn't really matter. If you are playing on an old version and can perform a trick, then do it.
