I've noticed that sometimes when you do it on an opponent with one stock each, you will win the game. But sometimes it will go into sudden death. What determines this?

It has to do with controller ports. If you are in the port closest to port 1, you will get the win. If you are in the port closest to port 4, you will usually get sudden death, although sometimes i've seen port 4 go either way inexplicably.

The backroom is working on a ruling in this situation to clear up the confusion.

If you read the post above yours, you'll find it isn't an unknown reason.
