Im new here but not new to marth. I've been using him since melee and i've found F smash an important weapon to marth's arsenal. However i've been reading a lot of threads about marths strategy and metagame and there have been a lot of talk about how good DB is and d-tilt however there is nothing about his f smash...

All along i thought this was a good killer move but also a good punisher and also for racking up some good damage but there has been no compliments on this move as i've seen so far...:ohwell:

Maybe i have just missed it these threads about the f smash but could you fellow experienced and knowledgeable marthers please enlighten me about the pros and cons about the f smash? :chuckle:

Well it's weaker than in melee and knockback isn't worth it unless you tip it, and it's range seems to be shorter than that of melee. Because of this it's easy to punish and so isn't used until there is an opening.

Because Marth is all about safety, and your opponent has to be wide open for the move to be worthwhile.

Dtilt is a far superior move for poking. So is ftilt. Unless you know that you have enough vulnerability frames on a punish, dancing blade is a far superior punishing tool.

But, when you have to finish, it's good to have it fresh... just remember TIP IT! (tip it good)

Oh yeah, and off fthrow at low percentages it's nice.

What is F-Smash? Could anyone give me some Tutorials about all those Fair-Smash and F-smash meanings?
There's no fair-smash, fair is forward air.

F-smash is forward smash.

ftilt is forward tilt (aka, have the joystick forward, but don't be dashing, and use the a button).

Suggestion: lurk a bit, most of the terminology is easy to get from context.

FSmash is good for some tippers/extra damage depending on di out of dthrow and fthrow on certain characters (like MK and Falco).

It's a good finisher still, you just NEED to be sure it'll hit, because it leaves you open enough to get hit with someone else's strong attack. It kills/sets up for kill decently at around 110-120% depending on the character, and a tipper will kill most if you hit at around 70%. But it became a lot harder to tipper.

Hm, this reminds me of a match i had another day against my friend in melee.
*Breaks friend's shield*
*charges up full fsmash*
*tipper misses by a tiny amount*
*partially charges up another*
*tipper misses again*
*fires a third without charging*
*hits with middle of blade*

right, right, with the tip, a fully charged F-smash kills at the center of FD at.....wow! 44%

Uncharged tip...74%.

however, without the tip...

Fully charged - 93%

Not charged - 132%

I tested on Mario. Those are the percents for F smash killings. Of course like everyone says it's important to use these well timed, or else it's too easy to punish.

Adumbrodeus said that DB is a "far superior" punishing tool compared to f smash...is this true? Although it may deal more damage i find it's better to f smash, knocking them off the stage so i can gimp them offstage and edgeguard...

Or i guess this all matters on the situation...high percent f smash, low percentages DB? or DB all the way?

And yeah a tipped f smash can do wonders.

Thanks for the responses so far. :chuckle:

Everything is situational, by far superior, I mean useful in many MANY more situations.

Fsmash is you can tip, your opponent is lagging for 10 or more frames (because it comes out at frame 10), and your opponent is at around 70 or above (or around 132 if you can't tip it), or your opponent is at low enough percents that you can reliably renew fsmash before you get to killing percents (0 percent grab combo to tippered fsmash for example).

Otherwise, go for dancing blades, especially if you don't have the frames for fsmash. Fsmash is really useful once you get to killing percents as a punisher, so reserving it until the optimal time to use it helps your game immensely.

Ultimately, dancing blades is always the safer choice, therefore useful in more situations, but f-smash is very useful in the right situation.

It also makes anyone who has ever done actual sword fighting come down with a case of chronic bleeding of the cornea...

A DB can set up for gimps just as well as an fsmash can once they're at high enough damage. its not going to kill them off the side from center stage but it works just as well near the edge, if not better because of its speed.

Simply put, DB hits twice as fast as an fsmash.
