Can't "Google translate" the images of Japanese characters but I don't think the website says anything special about Smash Bros 3ds considering the numbers between the characters.

Until someone more qualified than me shows up:

From what I can read, the new Smash Bros. is being exhibited for the first time in Japan on the 28th and 29th at some sort of event, the "Next Generation World Hobby Fair". The link is just meant to give more details. There's going to be a NIntendo booth where players can personally experience Smash Bros. 3DS (and possibly preorder?).

EDIT: The "preorder" bit could be referring to the fact that Smash Bros. 3DS goes on launch first. My mistake.

Basically, you can play the 3DS version at the Nintendo Booth on Saturday and Mario Kart 8 using the Wii wheel on Saturday and Sunday. The 3DS can be preordered there (though pre-orders started over a week ago...)The Mushroom and Flower Cup will be available to play. And while it was just a quick glance, you can get the vehicle for the Fossil Fighters racing game by bringing in your copy and 3DS? Not 100% sure.

According to translators, it's more of a reminder that this isn't the final roster than it is a tease at a reveal.

Why not? Neither Smash 64 nor Melee had a random slot. They could just want to confirm it's in in the magazine. More likely than randomly showcasing a character at an event. Especially one he only announced smash would be at the day before it was happening.

You know, I personally think it might really be a character reveal. I'm not trying to disprove you or anything, jigglover, but think about it, why would Nintendo need to go out of their way to show us the random button/icon on a poster, anyway? Maybe if it was being shown on the actual character select screen, then I'd also say "random button", but I think Nintendo is basically trying to show/hint to us that a character may get revealed very soon.

I don't think it is a character reveal coming up, nor is it a random icon. Like others have said, I'm pretty sure that this question mark slot is them saying "And there's more to come" or something like that. I wouldn't mind a character reveal, but I think it is too soon for that.

Why would it be the random button, you think people who look at the flier will be like OMG YES THEY HAVE THE RANDOM BUTTON AGAIN!? ... no. It probably is just a way to show the roster isn't final, or it COULD be a new character coming. We will see.

While I would love for a Chrom reveal, I'm pretty sure it's just Nintendo reminding us the roster isn't complete, like what Hippopotasauce said.

I don't think its just a random button, you can see a shape of someone or something in grey, but can't quite tell what it is.

Apparently someone found out it's just a flyer that comes with when you preorder the game, someone on the Bandana Dee Support thread said so.
So I guess it has nothing to do with the event.
...Darn.

I'm betting my money on Chrom to be revealed next. Not sure if this event guarantees a new reveal ,but it might since this is a large fair event and may want to push the Amiibo figures at the event. A new character reveal along with the Amiibo figurine would generate a generous amount of HYPE.

Melee didn't have a random character slot. It would just give you a random character if you selected off the corners. The picture probably just has the ? to pad out the rows because there weren't enough characters to evenly distribute.

New character or not we might be able to see if there have been any changes to the game since the demo or if any other new playable characters like Pacman, Palutena, ect are going to be there.

Also that is clearly NOT a random slot because it doesn't actually say "Random" on it pretty sure it would say random on it as all SSB random slots have

guys of you looked really close at that question mark thing there is a character out line IM NOT kidding this is a new character
Edit: the out line is really weird but I know its not folds in the flier its a character I just know this is a newcomer

The event has already started, so I'm guessing if we're to get any info, it will be at the end of the event, like Pac Man. No word if Sakurai will be there, if he was there then it's almost a shoe-in a character will be revealed at that time. I've determined that the time the event ends, at 2 AM American central time, any time around then would be the best time to check for updates, from an hour before to an hour after.

It might be nothing but it is suspiciously going to end right about when we usually get our updates.
