Even with that exploit, it seems pretty damn hard to get all of the custom moves. Even on classic, wich keeps throwing equipment my way.

It's not too bad. Takes a bit of patience but shouldn't take more than a week if you're persistent and/or have a lot of time.

What's really stupid is Mii Headgear. I still have 2 left to get... :<

It's not too bad. Takes a bit of patience but shouldn't take more than a week if you're persistent and/or have a lot of time.

What's really stupid is Mii Headgear. I still have 2 left to get... :<
And remember that getting headgear from challenges will add to the amount of duplicates that you're bound to pick up. If you hate to deal with headgear grinding, try to get all the random headgear, before going after the headgear that can only be acquired through challenges.

Soooo I'm not sure if this has been noted or not, but I got 11 hit combo on falcon on training, and nothing has happened.

I'm not sure its been mentioned, as I've only read a bit of the first and last couple pages, but when doing classic on the 3ds version, the custom moves you get tend to be more so based on who it is you're fighting. And at the end after beating master hand/core, it seems to give you a higher chance of getting a move for the character you are using.

So it might help, by looking at the character symbol on the paths, to choose one that you know you dont have all the custom unlocked for.

I've finished a few characters by simply choosing to fight them on the classic path.

Anyone notice how when playing target blast sometimes you get customs for one character a bunch of times in a row? Thought it was random at first, but it appears not.

I have found that if you go play a multi-man smash or two (could be any other 'mini-games' for that matter) with a character you want customs for, then go play target blast with that character, 90% or so of the customs you get are for that character.

Might not be as fast as in classic using ninjalink's trick, but I find it less painful, both because you can pay way less attention while grinding target blast (i.e do something else like read or watch a video), and because you can focus on one character at a time.

Just found this last night, and got all the customs for meta knight, marth, and pit --three characters I had only 2-3 of 9 customs for-- in 30-40 minutes :)
You still get repeats, and lots of equipment, but very few customs for other characters.

Just wanted to share the find, let me know if this works for you too!

This seems to be a recent thing, maybe from the last update? I stopped bothering to unlock moves for a while, and now that I'm attempting it again I'm getting a lot less of the moves for the character I'm playing, and a lot more for the characters I'm fighting. You seem to still have a chance of getting moves for the character you're playing when fighting Master Hand.

I don't like it...

Even if you're doing a Smash Run match with as many as four Greninjas though, you're not guaranteed to get any of Greninja's custom specials during the match.

The title is a lie. There is no easy way to unlock customs. Unlocking customs is a method of torture that is banned in many countries.

Are you guys sure the character you're playing Classic with has a higher chance of getting his own custom moves? Because I've been playing Classic, and only got 1 Ike move. As for other characters, I once ran 3 Classic runs in a row, unlocking 4 moves each, all of them for Duck Hunt Duo. Ike is the character I've got the least custom moves for, and he's my main :(

I found another way to get customs. Use glitched custom Mewtwo in Crazy Orders. I've past 25 matches with him.

You do realize that this thread is for Smash 3DS, right? What you've stated is only valid for Smash Wii U.
Oh, Sorry, didn't notice this was just the 3ds. even then, using this Mewtwo in Smash Run is also good if you need some invincibility frames/go though classic a lot.

Edit: The way you can use the Mewtwo customs, you can do for the other characters. So if i have a mii fighter with the 3rd down B and not for Dark Pit, you can use the 3rd Down B without having the custom.

A Bruser Mewtwo in smash run with evershield, healing shield and auto heal is ridiculous and pretty much guarantees desturction against the stronger enemys

I've never had any luck with this. I've only gotten a few custom moves, and that was only by completing classic mode normally. And none of them were for Robin, which is who I want customs for the most. Any other tips for doing this? Or are you supposed to get more equipment than customs. Maybe I'm just too impatient.

The "glitch" can totally be patched.

They can have the spinner slow down instead of stop on your A press.
They can hide what the spinner is on.
Remove the spinner all together and just give you something random for each match.
Or they could just make the home screen unaccessable when the spinner is spinning.

I've been using smash run for this. And the highest I seem to get is 5 or so every run. 3 in bad runs.

I've managed to play it right up the final two characters.

Dark pit needs up special.

And Dr mario need 2.

Just spent 3 hours on dark pit alone and nothing. Does the likelihood go down wit every completed character or something or am I just slowly going insane?

This information may be all well and good, but considering how difficult the AI will end up being for the higher intensities, your attempts to quickly gain equipment could crumble to pieces when you realize that the defense drops will make you even more vulnerable to being KO'd quickly.

Basically, every method for collecting equipment has a double-edged sword attached, especially in Smash Run, where you do not have the option of adjusting the difficulty.

do note the game kind of locks you out of getting new stuff if you don't occasionally change method.

e.g. I needed the last 10 custom moves but after 3 days straight of smash run I got nothing.

a few goes on trophy rush and I got them all within a few tries with a new one practically every time.

Imo, it's just better if you unlock all the relevant customs and the customs of your main. It's less tedious and there are less chances that you want to rip your hair out.

Also, am I the only one who was able to unlock all of the hats before even unlocking the relevant customs? :/

nope I got every hat first and costume too.

I manually unlocked all customs on wii u through a tough grind. After that I kinda gave up on 3DS with the 200 I had.

Very recently I found of a way to unlock them all instantly.

following those steps, youll be able to access homebrew.(make sure to select the correct system version. 9.9 new is for new 3ds 9.9 old for regular ones)

that is the save data manager. put that in your SD card and run it. press A to backup your save. on your pc, dow.load the smash save editor and open up your save file, there is a button to unlock custom moves. After that, hit save, place the sd card on the 3ds, boot up, go to save data manager and press B(import save). after that reboot and you have them all.

If this is too vague, I apologize but I am on my phone.

Quick Note: The purpose of this thread is to (hopefully) provide a definitive guide to quickly obtaining custom moves. Various strategies for doing so have popped up all over the internet in the wake of the game's release. Given their massive quantity and the extent of grinding necessary to obtain them all, a primer is essential. If you're just interested in seeing the proposed method for this, skip to the list in part two. That part's very simple, but I'm going to try to be very detailed here, because I'm creating this with the hope that relatively new players will not have to struggle as much as I did at first in the collection process. As such any alternate methods that prove faster will be welcomed and this post will be updated accordingly. I'm no authority and I'm perfectly willing to change this and properly credit it if feedback indicates I should.

This thread is not intended for debate about the value, purpose, use, or competitive viability of custom moves. I would ask that if you are a cool, classy customer you will refrain from posts of that nature and seek out a more appropriate thread.

PART ONE: Basic Notes About Customization

Here is a breakdown of all custom moves by character. I'm not sure where it came from, so for now at least, thanks to some mystery person.
  • To customize any character, simply access the "Custom" menu from the "Games & More" screen OR turn customization (the wrench) on from the Character Select Screen and choose any character.
  • When all is said and done, every single character will have two alternate choices (for a total of three options) available for any given Special move.
  • For an example of all this, create a Mii character, which will guide you through the basics.
  • Aside from the Miis, Palutena comes pre-loaded with all of her custom moves already available. Keep in mind that she is a unique case within the regular roster in the sense that all of her alternate moves offer incredible variety. For most characters, custom moves will essentially take the chosen special and alter it in some way, as opposed to changing it to an entirely different move.
  • Remember that you can store up to ten variations of any custom move set and that you can test the set by pressing R from its menu before saving it.
  • Also, you can give the set a nickname. Your opponents will not see this nickname, it is just to assist your memory. I would personally suggest something simple; I give them a 4-digit code listing the moves picked (ex. 1323).
  • Custom moves can be used online against friends, but not against strangers.
  • There are 376 custom moves that can be unlocked. Maybe it's just me, but for me, that's a pretty big number. Listen, I can't pretend that I know or understand anything about you, you might even be a terrible monster and, just guessing, you probably are, but I'm hard pressed to believe that you would consider it editorializing if I told you that having to unlock that many of a thing sure seems like a lot of work.
I should obviously also mention equipment. It is unlocked in the same way that custom moves are, and is also represented by the wrench. The circle that appears on your character when customs are enabled will present what kind of equipment you're wearing. I am not as acquainted with it in practice, but you will need to use it within this strategy, so just make a mental note that it is there.

PART TWO: How to Unlock Custom Moves FAST
First things first, watch this video (which I did not make, kudos to its creators):

This is just part of the strategy, but it is the key component. It is essential that you understand exactly how this works. If you can see any of the red wrench icon you want above the icon showing when you do the Home Button trick, hold A and hit Resume to land there. If you can only see the icon you want with none of the previous one showing below, or if you see a sliver of the icon above it, you will pick the icon above it, so hit Resume without pressing A and try again. If you let the roulette keep going for too long, it will eventually stop, so try repeatedly if you are failing so that you don't risk being stuck with something else. You'll get it, it's very easy to learn. Sometimes the game will lag a bit in doing this. Don't worry about it.

Now, let's go through the steps to quickly collecting.

  1. Go to Classic and choose the character who you most want to obtain custom moves for. They will be more likely to receive them, although you will also occasionally receive moves for random characters.
  2. Turn on Customs and equip anything that increases your attack power. Along the way you will unlock more powerful equipment, so adjust after every match. Focus solely on the attack stat, and, if available, choose equipment that offers critical hits or hyper smash attacks.
  3. Start Classic at the highest intensity you feel comfortable with, and use the Home Button trick before every stage to hit the red wrench.
  4. Well, now you beat the stage. The reason I specify what equipment to choose is that it makes this a relatively brainless process. With a good boost to your attack power, it'll only take a few smash attacks to win any given match.
  5. Once you are comfortable enough to increase the difficulty to a higher setting, do so. The more you do this, the faster it will go. With a handful of powerful pieces of equipment, I was able to take down every Classic stage in under 30 seconds, and even Master Core at 9.0 in under a minute - and this is not me bragging; I'm certain I'm not a great player by any means. This is just how much power the equipment offers.
  6. Again, not all drops will be moves. Many will be equipment. Some will be repeats. There does not seem to be a way to effect what drops.
  7. Rinse and repeat. All told, with practice this process will take 5-10 minutes and net you 15+ drops every time. When you've obtained all custom moves for any given character, the game will let you know.
That's all there is to it.
A handful of custom moves can (only?) be gained through Challenges. They are:
Captain Falcon - Lightning Falcon Kick: Land a 10 hit combo in Training Mode
Diddy Kong - Pop Gun Explosion: Clear 3,000 blocks in Trophy Rush
Ike - Muscle Bomb: Clear 1,000 blocks in Trophy Rush
Link - Giant Bomb: Clear 300 blocks in Trophy Rush
Mario - Explosion Punch: Score 200,000 in Target Blast
Marth - Easy Combination: Complete 100 Man Battle in less than 3 minutes
Meta Knight - Speed Drill: Win 5 matches as Meta Knight
Villager - Lloid Climb: Fight a match on Tortimer Island
Wii Fit Trainer - Big Ball: Land a 10 hit combo in Training Mode

PART THREE: Alternate Methods

Smash Run - Smash Run is fun, and if you're looking for everything, including gold and trophies, it's worth going through a handful of times. The problem is that drops are inconsistent and that some characters simply have a harder time faring well in this environment. It's up to you to decide how well this works, but it's essentially a gamble.

Trophy Rush - This one... Okay, I'll be honest. Some people have sworn by this, but I frankly find it to be the worst method available. I'll admit to this being a personal frustration, and I would recommend putting the effort in to see if you can find success with it. A two and a half minute rush will cost you 900 coins, and your skill level will determine how many customs you obtain. For me personally, a good run nets four if I'm lucky, but I've seen others claim to do well at it and snag eight or so every time.

I chose to recommend the Classic method because anyone can more than double their attack power and blitz through vs. matches, but ultimately all of these are worth trying, and you may find that one of these other ways fits you best. In the end the best way is probably just going to be whatever you have the most fun with, and obtaining every single move in the game is only really worth it for the completionists out there. Smash run worked like a charm on 3ds. Though some characters I had to play a ton more than others. I think I did about 2 rounds total with Luigi and 30 or so rounds with Greninja.
As for Smash Wii U, I just let 8 amiibos do the work. I dunno what would work without em.

Amiibo farming is an okay method to unlocking custom moves as well. My amiibo were able to unlock around 30 custom moves when i pitted them against each other on the 3ds version.

I'm just trying to figure out even after the latest patches.....why we can still get duplicate customs, get them taken from us if the CPUs cheat and destroy us, and we can't get them from standard Smash VS matches playing with our friends :l

Has anyone had trouble trying to get Duck Hunt's Super Duck Jump at least on the 3DS? There shouldn't be anything too notable about it, but I've had a period of trying to unlock all customs for each character by playing them in Smash Run nonstop until they come across it. So there's something wrong about my files or it's just extremely skewed RNG?

i don't see this suggested very often and think it works pretty well so I'll give it a go. A great method for smash run is to pick a speed character and get the best speed you can in 2 equip slots and the sprinter badge in the third slot. The sonic I'm using with 133 spd and a sprinter badge goes fast enough to finish the final straightaway in the run challenge in under a second literally. The problem is, at least with sonic, you can only win a couple of the final battles, due to the loss in atk. The one's I've been able to win consistently are run, climb, and the Kirby version of vs. enemy team. The advantage to this is you can easily get all the treasure chests once you get used to their locations. The disadvantage is that you risk losing them if you get ko'ed due to your low attack. Also I'd suggest pushing enemies off stage if you can. Cause that will kill some of them. For the Goombas just jump on their heads maybe it's just me but a quick drop seems to work better on the big ones since it takes more than 1 hit. I think 2-3 rather than 3-4 is about right.

The trick is a bit luck based but it helped me get a marth custom I was grinding all morning for.
