I was just wondering about smashboards' opinion on joining the military. Should I....

Join the military as soon as I graduate from highschool?

Join the military after I finish 2 years of community college?

Or join the military after 4-5 years of college.

Dude if you join military soon just hope you don't get deployed in the middle east, might be pulling out of Iraq but the whole region is volatile and we all know how much America loves to save the world.

Military is cool and all until until you see your friends and comrades get their guts strewn over the dirt and you getting a potential bullet in your face.

Or if you're looking to save the world apply as soon as you feel ready, although I would say that getting a degree first is much more wise, just in case you get a nasty disability when on duty and come back a cripple with low level education.

...Well... for me personally, "there are no atheists in foxholes", haha.

This applies to everyone from my point of view. Nobody should join the military because they could get deployed and get killed. That's not fun no matter what...

So if I were you, I wouldn't join the military at all. ^^;

I had two friends who did the marine corps. One started school and is going to finish a little late, but with his government clearance, getting a job isn't going to be too hard. The other friend got messed up in a bar fight after his tour, and I haven't heard too much from him, but I know he wasn't well.

Well, it depends...

do you want to enlist or get a commission as an officer?

Also, don't forget the GI bill... military can pay for your school after your minimum enlistment period.

And then, there's also ROTC.

Military will pay for your school.

But there's a 99% chance of going to Iraq, what with being new and all.

My brother was in the airforce and eventually got to live in Okinawa for three years. But he also quit because he didn't like what the military was doing and had had enough of serving.

Does the military retro-actively pay for college? Like if you go to college first? If not then I'd join the military first. If they do, I'd go to college first. It's nice to have an extra 4 years to live life.

ha.

You never answered my questions!
Ummm, I plan to join the NAVY, stay in for a minimum enlistment period, and then join the reserves for however long I feel like it. Not sure if I could get the GI bill if I were to start college before enlisting, but I dont see why not since 2 years of community college would be free for me in my situation anyways. Idk, i'll look it up tomorrow. I guess that would pretty much answer my own question...

Educate yourself a bit 1st then if you still feel like serving in the Navy, go for it.

You should talk to GHNeko about it as he has recently started in the navy.

How do you think you'd do on the ASVAB (sp?)? I think if you score high enough in the right area (i.e., linguistic ability or something), you can get a job that'll probably guarantee you're safe from most danger.

A friend of a friend of mine is an air traffic controller in the navy, seems like a great gig, and he'll be set to make a ton of money when he gets out, since civilian air traffic controllers make a ton of money.

Another friend of mine is training to be an Arabic translator (not sure if he's technically navy), and it's a great job.

So you don't necessarily have to worry about dying like everyone says. If you're SURE you want to join the military, you should do it before college, since you get your college paid for, and you can even take classes for credit while you're serving. I know a guy who earned his bachelors in management information systems while serving (relatively safely) as a computer technician in a base in Iraq. That's a pretty sweet deal - make about 40,000 a year WHILE getting a bachelors degree.

There's all sorts of ways to make the military work for you.

Definitely NOT for me, though. I think I would hate the military culture.

Honestly, it is clearly up to you. I can't really give you the type of answer you're looking for, as only you can do that. That being said, there are pros and cons to joining the military, and it also depends on what branch you join too. If you pass the ASVAB test well, you'll have a wide option of jobs, some of which will prevent you from seeing actual combat (if combat isn't your thing). If you feel you want to join the military, then go for it. Also, as stated before, they will pay for your college tuition for you, so the military does have its perks.

There are always other ways you can contribute. That's how I think it.
