2v2 Team Attack Question

So I've been looking around at tourneys in my area, and one thing that seems strange to me is that team attack is generally on in 2v2 tourneys. I hate to sound like a complete noob, but why is this a standard rule? It seems like having team attack on would take away much of the use of doing team battles, as the match devolves into two separate 1v1's on the same map. It doesn't seem to emphasize teamwork very much at all.

If someone could let me know what the reasoning is for this, I'd really appreciate it.

See, two Falco's spamming Double Lazer, or two Zelda's standing in one spot alternating Neutral B, or two of any of the ******** strategies in this game without team attack. It becomes more of a game of, "Who can think up the most broken and unstoppable strategy" and less about fighting, and strategies that actually take skill and execution, with a chance of failure.

yea Pierce7d is completely right about "why team attack is on". I won't lie when team attack is not on Me and who ever is on my team can spam basically anything. I prefer team attack on it's a back fire to all those smash happy fighters (Snake) .

In addition to being unable to spam as much with team attack on, you also become capable of saving your partner. For example peach can float out under a falling captain falcon and use her parasol to get them both back to the stage. Team attack also allows you to "wake up" your team mate's jigglypuff after a rest with a jab. Sure, she still gets damaged, but it's way better than what your opponents are going to do.

Can you imagine having to fight crap like double spammers, or a spammer with someone strong like Ganondorf or Ike to get free kills while you're being spammed? Many of these are strong teams with team attack on too, but at least it's fair if there's a chance of them screwing it up by accidentally hitting each other.

Being able to pull off team combos is much more skillful with team attack on. You have to space correctly to make sure that you don't kill your partner, and anticipate things such as when your partner will roll so they don't roll in front of your opponent and take the hit.

Many team strategies become possible and lead to a better game with team attack on. Things like spammers to fill G+W's bucket or heal Ness or Lucas, waking up a sleeping Jigglypuff before your opponents get to her, saving your partner with a weak attack so they get their jumps back or don't get knocked as far, etc.

IC's grab, MK holds A-button.

And in Melee, anyone grab, Mewtwo charges shadowball on top of them.

It's really funny, but it's not worth playing that way in a tourney. 2v1 is based around getting them to hit each other.

Another cool strategy when Team Attack/Friendly Fire is on:

Lucario uses Aura Sphere on a Falco/Fox/Wolf when they're using reflect, that'll hurt Lucario, making his attacks do more damage as he's on higher HP, but I can see why you think it's a strange rule....

Basically, what everyone else said. Honestly, I can't find a reason to put TA off anymore, it is a more balanced game with it on and requires true teamwork and skill to have victory, while still being fair to all competitors.
