The Pokemon Company International released a trailer for the 2014 Pokemon World Championships early this week. The Pokemon World Championships will feature over 500 players from over 30 countries competing in Pokemon Trading Card Game and video game competitions. Pokemon, unlike most other competitive gaming events, divides the player base into three age divisions - Junior, Senior, and Masters. As such, the Pokemon World Championships actually features 6 tournaments and will crown 6 World Champions (VG and TCG). Between all of the events players will be competing for over $100,000 in scholarships. If this were a Smash tournament, the prize support would be about 3 times the highest ever recorded ($35,000 at MLG Dallas 2010).

Pokemon players compete in a year-long Championship Series that includes City, State, Regional, and National Championships. The Pokemon Company International operates the Championship Series and provides flight and hotel to hundreds of players at the US National Championships and the World Championships annually. Following recent interest in the Smash Brothers community, many have wondered just what a deeper developer involvement may look like - Pokemon could offer that example. The 2014 Pokemon World Championships are the 11th TCG World Championships and the 6th video game World Championships. Check out the trailer below to get a sense of the event and make sure to tune in this weekend on twitch.tv/pokemon to catch the action. You can also check out the specially built event portal at pokemon.com/worlds.
