Trash talk. But it's all recreational. Don't let it get to you. Make sure to go with friends that'll hype you up when you play. Because if it's your first tourney most likely no one will know you so no one is gonna be on your side when you fight someone except your friends. Keep doing good and people will be on YOUR side cheering you on when you fight people when everyone's watching.

Show'em what zss can do.

I still pick ZSS against falco.... granted there isn't a true falco main in my area, but I have more trouble with wolf

Expect to get nervous when the pressure is on. Try to keep a cool head and you should do fine. Try and introduce yourself to others and forge friendships at tournies, they can go a long way.

Expect to have LOTS of fun.

EDIT: Also, expect to encounter play styles you've never seen before. Being able to stay calm and think about what's going on and adapt during the match is what distinguishes the great players from everyone else.

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty nervous about this tourny because I don't know anyone.

I'd say you should definatly bring a friend with you, specially if you don't know anyone. I've never participated in one, but I sure as hell wouldn't go alone. A friend will probably get you much more motivated, and it would surely help you relieve a bit of the stress.

I think it would also be good to not take it too seriously, since it's your first tourney. You should take the opportunity to get the feeling of what a tourney is. Also, expect it to be a growing experience, rather then a chance to win. If you go with this mindset, you'll most likely end up gaining much more from it.

This is all theories from someone who never attended a tourney, but I think this would apply to pretty much anything similar.

In conclusion, just don't take it too at much heart. If you're going with a positive outlook and the hope of getting better(rather then winning), you will obviously gain much more.

It will help relieve the stress, but you'll find yourself closed off from everyone, as most likely you will cling to that person and ignore everyone else. I went to my first tourney alone. I didn't know anyone, and yeah, I was scared ****less. But I showed up early, got to know the few people that were already there, and had a great time. Being alone forces you to mingle with the other players there, and you'll make a few friends pretty quickly.

Would you recommend going alone?
Yes, as a matter of fact I would. Just for your first tournament, so that you can get the feel of how the scene is and how thing's are run.

If you feel like you wouldn't be safe, on the other hand, then I would recommend bringing someone.

That all depends on what kind of person you are. Personnaly as a shy person, I'd like to have a friend with me. That doesn't mean it would make me closed off from others. In fact, it would just help me. I'm personnally someone who, when alone, tends to "close" on myself. Being with a friend usually helps me get rid of some of my shyness.

In a lot of cases when I'm with strangers, having a friend with me helps me talk to strangers(even if they are strangers to that friend). Personnally I can tell you from experience, being alone makes it MUCH worst for me(in terms of being closed off from the others). At least in my case, being with someone I know gives me the confidence I often lack to talk to strangers.

Of course, that applies to me, so it might not to him. I think jibby should interrogate himself a bit and find out whether or not it'd help him socialise if he's with a friend. If he goes with a friend and keep in mind to make new ones, there probably won't be any problem with it.

Well, I generally hear that in first tournies, expect to get destroyed by some really, really good players. I've also heard that the main focus shouldn't even be placing in the tourney, it should be about playing as many friendlies and/or MM's that will help you get matchup experience.

I have to agree with both Cake and Spike. The first tournament I went to, I went pretty much alone. In fact, I got a ride with a total stranger to the tournament back when I was in high school. The thing is, I knew a bunch of the people that were going there through the forums, and was looking forward to meeting them in person. It really helps to get to know some of the other people attending.

My experience was probably a little bit different than a standard first-timer, though. Still, if you have online friends that you know are going, you don't need to bring anyone. It definitely helps not being entirely alone, and I highly recommend getting there early and getting friendlies in and mingling with the people at the tournament, especially if it's somewhat local. Making new friends that share a common interest is a great experience.

At every tournament/meetup I've been to (only been to Melee tournies), I've gotten a chance to play some great players, like Eddie, GERM, Zelgadis, Wes, MikeG, etc. I had a great time just talking and playing friendlies, but I had been talked most of them online before meeting them.

If your tourney has got a thread, I recommend getting to know the people attending it so you can make plans to hang out with some people.

Here's their thread: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=218811

Maybe you should post and let them know that you're going. It's always better for the people running it to get as close to the actual head count as possible. The thread isn't very active, unfortunately. I guess it's a small tourney, but there are some really good players in that area, like the DBR crew.

I went to my first tourney a few months ago. I personally think I have the skill to compete, but in my first pool I was set to fight a few people that I had seen on the forums.

I was shaking during matches, I couldn't get over the fact that I was playing against (Insert username here). I was extremely scared and got knocked out in the first round. My best friend however, who's never been on the forums made through both rounds of pools and into the brackets.

If its possible, try not to get all nervous because of the name of the guy you're facing. That's half the mindgames right there

Yea it's pretty small. I don't know much crews there so I don't think I will know too much people.
