Yeah, Demi-Fiend is canonically a magic brawler with a focus on fire and almighty, according to Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. He's rad as hell.

I don't know much about SMT, but that one dude with the Glowing Tattoos looks kind of neat. And I think he's mostly hand to hand, so that could be cool.
Oh yeah, he's got a ton of animations to draw from. He's practically the... only SMT character to ever get any animations tied to him, including punches, kicks, shoves, summoned swords, katanas, energy balls, whatever demon stuff you can think of. Most everyone else gets are Pokemon-esque sprite effects for their moves.

Thankfully, the new game looks like we're gonna be seeing actual animations this time instead of budget 3DS effects, thank God.

Anyways if you're at all interested in seeing a revised moveset for him that I whipped up, check it out below. I've organized it into different subsections so you're not overwhelmed with gifs.
The Demi-fiend has access to a limitless supply unnatural demonic power, and with that, a huge variety of abilities that one wouldn't expect from a shirtless brawler, such as summoned swords and energy shots. Unlike the other protagonists, he is neither defensive nor elegant. His strength lies in keeping that same momentum through his brutality and aggressiveness and killing the opponent before he himself gets killed.

His entire kit revolves around picking up around picking up momentum and keeping it through a series of aggressive plays. His focus move leaves him open, but makes his advantage state much more powerful, increasing the killing power of his strongest attacks, his smashes and grabs. Defend all you want, but the Demi-fiend specializes in piercing through those defenses. The key to his defeat is outlasting him and turning that momentum against him. If he can continually achieve stage-control and keep himself focused, victory will come easy. However, a single mistake and he's left wide open in the wake of missing his focused attacks, and with a recovery as sub-par as his, this could spell his doom. Similar to his own games, being an effective fighter relies on making the difficult battle decisions between attacking, defending, counter-attacking, and preparing, but with his myriad combat options, he's extremely versatile and a force to be reckoned with.
Voice:
As that voice actor is unknown and possibly not in work anymore I feel like Johnny Yong Bosch with the "Devil filter" would be a suitable replacement.
Miscellaneous animations
Stance:
Both hands are down balled in fists while Demi-fiend is slightly hunched over. His chest rises and falls with every breath.
(Normal battle stance in Nocturne)
Intro animation: Challenged to a Duel
A red portal opens up in the sky with the Demi-fiend falling through it. He lands hard in the superhero landing pose, punching the ground and cracking the earth before yanking it out and resuming his battle position.
(First time encountering a Fiend)
Idle:
Takes a deep breath, puts his right arm on his neck and cracks it.
Walk:
Sidesteps forward cautiously.
Run:
A quick sprint low to the ground.
(His standard run animation in the games)
Double Jump: Sigil
Creates a sigil in the shape of the Shin Megami Tensei logo to leap off of before it fades away. Similar to how Bayonetta performs her double jump.
(Tokyo Mirage Sessions platforms)
Wall Jump:
Leaps from the wall
Shield:
Crosses his arms in an X shaped form.
(his most iconic pose and the one that gets featured in promotional material often)
Parry: Repel
Pushes palms forward as the "void" sound effect plays.
(Unused animation. Sound effect is from when a move is nullified)
Shield Broken: Dizzy
Clutches his arm while crouched over. A special effect is over his head
(Dizzy animation from SMT3)
Face Down animation: Game Over
Lays down body outstretched
(Game Over screen from SMT3)
Victory: Leitmotif
0:10-0:18
(From SMT3 Title Loop 2)
Dodges
Back Roll: Fog Breath
Ducks backwards leaving a faint afterimage of mist behind
Front Roll: Evade
Dodge rolls through the enemy circling around the enemy.
Spot Dodge: Miss!
Dodges into the background before phasing right back in.
(His dodge animation from SMT3)
Air Dodge: Press Turn Remover
Disappears for a faint second before reappearing.
Get-up Moves
Ledge Attack:
Flips up and lets out a war cry blowing away the enemy.
(War Cry skill in SMT3)
Face Down Attack:
Punches the ground, creating a shockwave to get up.
Face Up Attack:
Lets out a shockwave from his body while levitating to his feet
Normal Get Up:
Rises to his normally, his tattoos aglow for a second.
Dodge Get Up:
Dives either forward or backward to get up.
Kirby Copy Ability: Divine Shot.
Holds one of his stubs out while light gathers around it before launching it. Due to its power, if used without footing, it will launch Kirby in the opposite direction from which it was fired. Can be aimed in 8 directions. On the ground, it can also be aimed downwards to launch Kirby up and in the air can be aimed up to launch Kirby down.
Neutral Aerial: High King
Extends both his palms out with the leading hand being slightly angled downward and the back hand upward. Lighting courses through both hands dealing multi-hitting damage and knocking the opponent back slightly. It's a deceptively powerful move and comes out extremely quickly while also being a potent combo option. Similar to Roy's Nair, it's sure to see use at both low and high percentages.
(Lucifer's lightning attack in SMT3)
Forward Aerial: Prominence
A three part forward air in the similar vein to Bayonetta's. Ignites his fists with black-blue flames and punches the opponent three times with the last hit dealing the most knockback. First with his back hand he will do a right straight, then with his leading hand he will do an uppercut, before finally using the back hand again to do an overhead.
(Lucifer's fire attack in SMT3 where he causes an explosion of black-blue fire)
Back Aerial: Glacial Blast
Freezes his own right foot and does a flipkick, doing a large amount of damage and knockback while if timed and spaced correctly spiking the enemy at the tip of the kick. A risky, but decisive move with a large amount of range, but a larger than average startup, similar to Wolf's Back Air.
(Ice Skill Lucifer uses in SMT3.)
Up Aerial: Hamaon
Gathers energy around his feet as he does two quick roundhouse overhead kicks that drag all enemies in front into the second kick. Very powerful and very fast making it a go to combo and kill option.
(Demi-fiend can learn the hamaon skill in SMT3)
Down Aerial: Mudoon
Dark energy gathers around his fists as he performs a diving punch below. The move is unlike most stall-then-falls in that it has far less startup meaning that it comes out much faster and that the distance that he goes down is a set short distance. Demi-fiend can angle it slightly making the dive punch go straight below or slightly forward. If it connects with the ground, there is also a shockwave on landing. If the move is sweet-spotted the enemy is hit with a devestating spike that launches the enemy in the direction of the punch. Otherwise, they are knocked up and away.
(Demi-fiend can learn the mudoon skill in SMT3. The animation is taken from the diving minigame within the Amala Network)
Neutral Special: Divine Shot
Reaches left hand out, bracing it with his right hand, charging it up and then firing a blast of pure light. Can be aimed downwards to launch the Demi-fiend off the ground, the first few frames turning his body into a weak hitbox that knocks away enemies nearby. This move can be used in the air, but its sheer strength will launch Demi-fiend in the opposite direction of the direction of the blast. In a way, it could function as a recovery mixup.
(Skill in SMT3 where Demi-fiend fires a blast of light from his arm)
(Air version/launch off ground version)
Side Special: Deadly Fury
Charges an energy blade before he rushes forward and slices with a purple energy sword. In the air, the swing gives him a small amount of height for recovery.
(Move where Demi-fiend charges a katana with his right hand before gripping it with his left and slicing in an iai style)
Up Special: Xeros Beat
Spin Kick that unleashes explosive balls. Similar to Roy's Flare Blade, can be angled to move in a more horizontal or vertical motion. When used on the ground, Demi-fiend does not move.
(Magical attack where Demi-fiend does a spin kick launching several explosive balls from his feet)
Down Special: Focus
Charges up and changes the animation of the next Smash attack or grab. This can only be used on the floor and has a long start-up time, limiting its spammability. Smash attacks that are "Focused" will gain a huge 1.5x damage and knockback multiplier on top of doing a large amount of shield break.
(Skill that doubles the damage of the next attack. Shield breaking capability comes from the fact Demi-fiend can pierce opponents)
Down Special (when in Focus): Gaea Rage
Due to already being focused, a grounded down b activates his strongest attack: The Gaea Rage. Here, the ground cracks underneath him and a giant blast of light explodes from underneath with him at the epicenter. It's similar to Cloud's Finishing Touch, but has a bigger vertical hitbox and deals more damage in exchange for less early killing power. Instead of a faux-down smash, it is more of a faux-up smash.
(Skill where Demi-fiend cracks the earth and OHKOs everyone with little exception)
Down Special (Aerial): Deathbound
Due to focus being a ground only move, doing a down b in the air summons a blue energy sword midair and comes crashing down, spiking anyone caught within its length to the ground. Similar to Bayonetta's down air, but disjointed. Despite its power, range, and disjoint, it's also got a long cooldown time due to an added animation of him releasing the energy blade.
(Skill that creates blue energy blade)
Jab: Attack
Jab 1: A left jab that comes out extremely fast and very safe. Doesn't lead to much, but leads to many more options than usual
Jab 2: A quick right hook that knocks the opponent away. Unsafe on shield, however.
Jab 2 Charged: A stronger right hook that can be delayed charging the fist with power. While it leaves Demi-fiend open, it could lead to a very potent mixup and game of chicken where whoever acts incorrectly loses hard. The more it's charged, the more shield damage it does, making it extremely intimidating to shields.
Jab Infinite: If 2 inputs are made before jab 2 comes out, a relatively standard jab flurry will happen, finishing with a mediocre overhead punch.
(Default attack from SMT3)
Forward Tilt: Iron Claw
Does a small leap forward and scratches the area in front, a quick disjointed punishing move with little startup or lag. Kills fairly late, but is useful for getting the enemy offstage and has a decent overhead hitbox as well.
(Iron Claw skill from SMT3)
Up Tilt: Fire Breath
Breathes a stream of fire all around his body in an arcing motion above him. Covers a large portion above him, and knocks the enemy up for further aerial pressure.
(Fire Breath skill from SMT3)
Down Tilt: Hades Blast
Stomps the earth, letting out a shockwave at the epicenter of the kick that travels low to the ground and could easily go through depleted shields that don't cover the enemy's feet. If the foot attacks the shield directly, a large amount of shield damage is done. Knocks them directly upward for a followup. Spikes the enemy if they're hanging from the ledge.
(Hades Blast skill from SMT3)
Dash Attack: Berserk
Rushes into the enemy arms crossed. Does weak damage and knockback, but launches at a shallow angle putting the enemy in an awkward recovering position.
(Lunge skill in SMT3)
Forward Smash: Freikugel
Crosses his arms in front of his face while energy gathers. When released, he fires a laser beam of pure energy from his eyes. This move can be angled up or down. Focus boosts its damage, knockback, and shield damage by 1.5x. Activates fast and is extremely powerful.
(Freikugel Skill in SMT3)
Up Smash: Megidolaon
While charging he gathers energy into his fist. Releasing it makes him punch into the sky causing the energy gathered in his fist to explode in a purple-blue almighty blast doing critical damage to anyone caught above him. It also has a hitbox at the beginning near his feet that launch the opponent up into the explosion similar to Marth's Up-Smash. Focus boosts its damage, knockback, and shield damage by 1.5x. It's fast, but has a very linear hitbox.
(Megidolaon skill in SMT3)
Down Smash: Javelin Rain
Launches explosive micro-missiles from his back that travel a short distance up before coming back down and exploding all around him. Hitting the missile while it's mid-air will have a small amount of stun but won't hurt significantly.
(Javelin Rain Skill in SMT3)
Grab: Might
Reaches over with his left hand and holds the enemy up in a choke. The grab itself does a small amount of damage over time due to the Demi-fiend's fists being set aflame.
(Skill that increases Demi-fiend's attack)
Pummel: Tempest
Pummels the enemy with his right fist that is set aflame. Very slow for a pummel, but does a greater than average amount of damage for a pummel.
(Tempest skill Demi-fiend learns in SMT3)
Throws:
Forward Throw: Magma Axis
Grasps the enemy before rearing back and chucking the enemy as far as possible.
FOCUSED:
Forms a fiery circle with his hands lifting the enemy far into the air and damaging them all the while. Then chucks the enemy full force while they're set ablaze.
(Magma Axis skill Demi-fiend learns in SMT3)
Back Throw: Spiral Viper.
Slams the enemy over and behind him, bouncing them off the ground, before kicking them away. Doesn't kill, but good for re positioning the target.
FOCUSED:
Slams the enemy over and behind him, where he then follows up with a beam that explodes on impact, killing the enemy at higher percent ranges.
(Spiral Viper skill in SMT3)
Down Throw: Oni-Kagura
Slams the enemy into the floor with both arms being used to hold the enemy, bouncing them off the floor. While there are few, if any true combos that come from this move, it sets the enemy up in a mixup position where the Demi-fiend can choose to pressure or to charge a focus.
FOCUSED:
Charges up an energy ball around the enemy's head before Demi-fiend headbutts the enemy and the ball causing an explosion and burying the opponent into the ground, setting up for any killing blow. While the headbutt itself deals a small amount of damage, it also launches several small explosive balls around the enemy which explode dealing damage, but not knocking the enemy out of the bury.
(Oni-Kagura skill Demi-fiend learns in SMT3)
Up Throw: Apocalyptic Deadly Fury
Rears his right fist back before the flames on his fist flare up. Then uppercuts the opponent with all his might. This is by no means a kill-throw, but it sets the enemy up in an uncomfortable position above demi-fiend where they can be pressured with nair and uair.
FOCUSED:
Lets out a flurry of clawed strikes before rearing back and letting loose with a brutal jumping kick, one that is dangerously lethal in power. This is a throw made explicitly for killing enemies at higher percents that are not close to a blastzone in front or behind.
(Deadly Fury skill Demi-fiend learns in SMT3. However in SMT4: Apocalypse, the animation changed from a single clash to a series of claw strikes)
Final Smash: Morning Star
Lets out a War Cry that stuns the area in a sphere around him (think Mewtwo Final Smash) and vacuuming enemies towards himself. He then teleports into the sky before a cinematic displays him crashing down from the atmosphere while engulfed in an almighty purple-blue flame exploding on impact and dealing an extreme amount of damage. Past a certain percentage, anyone caught inside the blast is outright deleted.
(Lucifer's strongest attack, one that only gets put into the game past SMT3. Animation taken from Demi-fiend's strike when he dives in the Amala Labyrinth)
Taunt 1: Dia
Summons Pixie who will circle Demi-fiend sprinkling sparkling dust on him as the healing sound effect plays, blows him a kiss, and then teleports back into his COMP.
(Trademark healing skill of Pixie)
Taunt 1: Provoke
Crosses his arms, staring directly forward with his eyes closed. Then, opens his eyes, lets out a loud "Hmph!" and releases a large amount of electric energy around him.
(Animation from Raidou Kuzunoha's boss fight in SMT3 where he uses "Provoke")
Taunt 3: Wild Dance
Sarcastically claps in a mocking manner.
Victory 1: Mind's Eye
Falling from the sky, Demi-fiend cracks the earth on impact before looking up at the camera, whereby the screen will flash.
(Mind's Eye is a skill learnt in SMT3 that prevents Demi-fiend from being ambushed. Dante can leap off of an extremely tall building early on in the game)
Victory 2: Jive Talk
Summons Pixie on his shoulder and walks away before Pixie beckons towards the camera and they both look at it.
(Pixie is Demi-fiend's trademark partner demon. Jive Talk is a skill learned in SMT3 that allows Demi-fiend to more easily converse with demons)
Victory 3: True Demon Ending
Walks toward the camera slowly as it slowly zooms up to reveal his face. The victory screen splashes and for a second as Demi-fiend's eyes glow red. For a split second during the flash the silhouette of an entire hoard of demons can be seen.
(The final and most difficult ending in SMT3 to achieve)

Cool. Not one of my most wanted, but I sure as hell won't complain if it ever happens. Good luck to you guys!
Thanks dude, at this point, we're gonna need all the luck we can get if we're going to see this game release before the end of this decade, haha.

Yeah, Demi-Fiend is canonically a magic brawler with a focus on fire and almighty, according to Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. He's rad as hell.
Hell yeah he's cool. What I love about him is that he perfectly represents the series' demons while also being his own unique thing.

Demi-Feind does look sick. Now I'm hoping even more!

Though I guess it helps using DMC and Tekken gifs for some of the moves, to translate them a bit more properly into a fighting game.

He seems like a mix of a mage and a fighter from typical RPGs.

Yeaaaaaaah, I was wondering if it was a bit too much when I realized...
"Well ****, I'm not gonna hand animate all of these."
and any more words and this may as well be a damn Make Your Moves submission.

Besides, if I ever need to make a Dante or Nero moveset, I got the gifs, right there.

Nice dude, really like the expanded set! One thing worth noting though is that Demi-fiend has a confirmed voice actor due to the Japanese drama CD, Susumu Chiba. And the English voice actor from IV Apocalypse sounds like Bryce Papenbrook, though that's unconfirmed. He played Issachar in the original IV though, so it's not out of the question that he could have done a lot of miscellaneous voices for IV Apocalypse, or if they could have even reused stuff from IV.

Yoooo, thank you so much for this.

I literally looked everywhere and started up multiple threads on various sites asking for this question and I couldn't find anyone. Props dude.

Well... at least Joker looks cool.
A tiny bit disappointed we didn't get any mention though...

Fellas, Joker dropped and his set is entirely Persona-specific, no Megami Tensei demons whatsoever. That makes me think there's still a possibility of SMT.

Yeah that was weird. I'm not surprised we didn't get any mainline content, but Jack Frost seems like he'd be the most obvious candidate for being a spirit or a background stage element.

At least to a greater extent than Morgana being in all of Joker's taunts, lmao.

Not to mention, and I had this thought looking at his moveset because it was something I was desperately hoping for:

It looks like it's real, REAL easy to make an Echo Fighter of Joker based on a mainline SMT protagonist.

Think about it. Joker's long knife can be replaced with a short sword, since SMT protagonists use those alongside, you guessed it, guns. And my hope that Arsene didn't physically interact with anyone else in the battle came true: this means that, for an SMT protagonist Echo Fighter, you can replace Arsene with a significant demon like, say, Cerberus (for an SMT1 protagonist) and it wouldn't conflict with anything despite looking completely different from Arsene. Change Eiga to something like Agi or Bufu or whatever, and we're good.

The only caveat seems to be that a "limit break" fighting style like Joker currently has with down-B may not work well with an SMT protagonist. I'm okay with having the grappling hook for an SMT protag Echo Fighter, it was invented just for Joker and we can pretend that SMT protagonists have to climb all those ruined buildings somehow and a grappling hook seems okay.

Edit: Ooh, I came up with another idea. The protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei 1 wears his COMP on his head, via an eyepiece. He can summon demons by removing it the same way Joker takes off his mask / glasses to summon Arsene.

Not even a single SMT nod, even Jack Frost, is a real kick in the ****. But Sakurai does what he pleases - legacy only matters when he feels like it.

Yeahhh... *thinks back wistfully to my days of playing Wario Land 1-4 and Shake It!!, as well as Wario World*

But I'll still hold out hope. While Sakurai said Echo Fighters won't be part of the Fighter's Pass, maybe he can make a separate DLC pack for them, and perhaps we can get some mainline SMT recognition that way. Joker's current moveset gives me hope.

Edit: People pointed out that Joker's alts reference every Persona game, rather than his party members. The default outfit is self-explanatory, the purple outfit is Revelations: Persona, the red outfit is both Persona 2 games as well as Persona 5, the blue outfit is Persona 3, and the yellow outfit is Persona 4. This just leaves the Crow outfit, then the two Shujin Academy alternate costumes.

Wow, I gotta thank Joker for bringing all this traffic here suddenly!

Anyway, while the servers are screwed and no one can download I guess I'll reply to some comments.

Yes, I've been advocating a Megaten echo of Joker for the longest while, and I'm certain that if there were to be one, it should definitely be Raidou Kuzunoha.

They're both young teenagers highly skilled at acrobatics, wielding both a gun and a blade while fighting with their ethereal beings, dressed all in black and quiet yet cunning. The parallels are obvious here.
joker raidou.jpg

For his persona, I imagine a good substitute for Arsene would be Yo****sune who he can summon with his vials. Instead of the persona-specific eiha, he could instead use the zio-line of spells Yo****sune occassionally learns!
Raidou Yo****sune 2.jpg

Heck, you could even go ahead and keep the All out Attack but use Raidou, Raido, Geirin, and Nagi! Instead of "The Show's Over," he could have a line that references how he's a detective that solves crimes instead of vigilante justice.

A great one would be:
Raidou Case Closed.jpg

The pieces would fit together so nicely, and it'd be a great way to draw interest for another Devil Summoner game, especially one made by a competent battle designer like say Platinum Games.

Not even a single SMT nod, even Jack Frost, is a real kick in the ****. But Sakurai does what he pleases - legacy only matters when he feels like it.
Yeah...

It's unfortunate, but both Atlus, Nintendo, and Sakurai care far more about the Persona franchise, and Persona 5 specifically, than SMT, their "flagship." It's not hard to see why one would be more popular than the other, but it seems like Atlus always seem to find a way to make Persona 5 more relevant while providing nothing for the rest of the Megaten franchise.

I don't want to blame Atlus for "ignoring" us, but there's probably a good reason why you can make a Persona-centric website and have it update every single week with new content, merchandise, and rumors while a Megaten one would be dead on arrival.

Well, stay positive. Short of them cancelling SMTV, we'll get our day in the sun someday. I will admit though, these past 5 months have made by heart feel, a little heavier than normal. That same sensation of ennui PSIGuy PSIGuy described as having once Joker was revealed...

Yeah those are really cool references, even if the colors themselves are kinda underwhelming. I wish I had a Maya costume though, lol.

Anyway folks, don't give up hope! In the words of Maya Amano,
lets positive thinking.jpg

I hope one day the Persona 5 people would show interest with the rest of the series and fill this place up a bit more, y'know?
It's better than this outcome:

Man, so many SMT games could use re-releases and ports to reach a wider audience.

Just think of all the people who'd love Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne if it got a Switch port, or hell even a PC port. That game has no equipment to worry about besides the Magatama system, and has a very beautiful cel-shaded dark atmosphere to it that still holds up. Lots of people would love it! But instead they have to contend with hunting down an old PS2 copy. Same with the Digital Devil Saga and Raidou Kuzunoha games.

To be fair, a not insignificant portion of SMT games are on 3DS. But I'd hesitate to say any of the games on that system are good entry points into the series. And whatever you think of the system, people at this point prefer playing portable games on the Switch far more than the 3DS at this point even with the 3DS' two screens.

While SMTV has been announced for Switch, there currently aren't any SMT games on it at all. The closest we get is BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle with, well, Persona 4 content, and now Joker in Smash. I really hope the SMT team is working on some ports.

What would be a good SMT-themed stage for Stage Builder? I'm thinking an incarnation of the Cathedral of Shadows, a bombed wasteland based on when you first emerge from the diamond realm in SMT1, maybe the Diamond Realm itself. The tower connecting Mikado to Tokyo (that you can enter and emerge into Mikado, while the lower half is ruined Tokyo) might work too. There's not a whole lot of SMT material for stages off the top of my head without resorting to spritework but I'd like to make something anyways.

I don't know what you could do with Stage Builder in terms of representing SMT very well...

Hmm, I suppose you could attempt to make a Vortex World Stage where the ground curves inwards towards the center around the edges, sort of like an inverse Mario Galaxy.

Or perhaps the inside of the tower of kagatsuchi with its blocks that move back and forward.

It's quite difficult thinking due to this being a dungeon crawling game after all.

lmao they're adding meme skeleton to dx2.

From SMT1, the Great Cathedral, the final dungeon in the game. It can be a very big stage, with a solid middle section and pathways that lead up and down, representing the lairs of Archangel Michael and Asura Lord. You can color code the Law and Chaos sections.

I saw a neat Tartarus stage online, it's the top of the tower set against the Luigi's Mansion background. The Grand Cathedral's background can be an indoor stage, like the middle section of Castle Siege if possible. If not, then Temple could work.

I hope that's a decent suggestion. I also like the Tower of Kagatsuchi idea Idon put forth, you can just make blocks that move back and forth in neat patterns.

So guys, there's a mobile game called Sega Heroes, which is one of those puzzle crossover games, and they have a voting thing going on for characters to add. The good news is that this includes Atlus characters, even Catherine and Snowboard Kids. The bad news is that there's only one Shin Megami Tensei character on the vote (I think their name was Raidou, but I don't remember exactly). That being said, it is possiblr to type out any characters you want, but aren't in the vote, so you can ask for someone like Demi-fiend, if you want.

SMT didn't get any references in the Joker pack, not even Jack Frost. Man I remember the days when Persona was just a spin off and didn't eclipse the mainline games. If there's anything to look forward to it will be this E3, perhaps we might finally get a glimpse on SMT V which Atlus kept silent about for two years.

Oh man Raidou is so cool. Wish Persona didn't have to kill off every single Megami Tensei spinoff franchise.

Yo guys, C chocolatejr9 said this before, but check out the Sega Heroes poll. They're looking for new characters to add to the mobile game and in the the Shin Megami Tensei category, there's Raidou Kuzunoha! While it's a game that's not to my taste, any publicity would be super nice.

Unfortunately, Demi-fiend, Flynn, and everyone else aren't exactly... an option so you're going to have to put him in the "other" category and hope Sega notices.
Hopefully, SMT becomes something more to Sega and Atlus than "That dead franchise that spawned Persona"
Fingers crossed yall.

In the meanwhile, hey, at least Joker's fun!

I listed SMT as the game and instead of selecting Raidou (I haven't played his games yet), I skipped straight to the bottom and manually typed Demi-fiend. Here's hoping it does something.

Double post but it's been 2 days so it's fine.

I remember someone in this thread saying it wasn't cool that some people here were saying Persona and SMT were completely separate series even though the former was a spin-off of the latter. Their concern was that people shouldn't think Persona isn't a TRUE Shin Megami Tensei series because it came off as elitist or something like that.

Well, here we are, months later, and there's quite a bit of Persona 3-5 content in Smash Ultimate, and nothing from the main series Shin Megami Tensei games (the only spell Joker uses is Persona-exclusive, though upon further research I appreciate it as a reference to its effect in Persona 1). So despite that press release that Nintendo put out acknowledging that Persona was a spin-off of the Nintendo-affiliated SMT games, maybe not even Nintendo / Sakurai thinks Persona is an SMT game.

Just a sobering thought I had. Not that I think Persona games aren't true SMT games or anything like that.

Honestly, I want to go back there and give that person a piece of my mind on how ignorant that comment is,
but I neither want to hear from them again, nor do I believe they even care at this point, nor do I care to bring up dead conversations that have already been put to rest months ago.

Personally, I think it's just a simple matter of damn logistics. Persona, in Japan, is considered its own thing with the overlap being reused demon designs.

See, it's similar to Drakengard and Nier.
If I google Drakengard, I'll get Drakengard content.
If I google Nier, I'll get Nier content.

However, if I google Persona, I'll get Persona content
If I google Shin Megami Tensei, I'll get some Shin Megami Tensei content with a lot of Persona content I have to sift through.

And this is all due to the fact that Atlus USA in their infinite wisdom decided to slap Shin Megami Tensei on every title Atlus relased to the West, a naming convention that they haven't even used in over a decade yet still clings on despite so many people telling them otherwise.

Anyway, you heard what osby said, no double posting.
If you want to make a post here and actually have someone read it, feel free to DM me or shoot me a message at any of the threads I hang out on.
I'll make a post here which will clear up the double post rule.

I've never played a SMT game, but it kind of bothers me that ATLUS milks the heck out of Persona 3, 4, and 5 but gives very little love towards SMT. I mean, it's the series that made them successful in the first place. After all, before Megami Tensei, they were making crappy movie-games for the NES. I think they should show more appreciation towards the parent of Persona. Apparently some people don't even know that Persona is a spin-off of SMT, and that kind of blows me mind. Anyway, I feel like SMT should've been represented in Smash's DLC pack one in some fashion, and it's a shame that it's not.

Haha, yeah I know the feeling.

But, y'know... it makes complete sense why they'd push those Persona games so hard.

Still waiting to see when it will be SMTV's release date to find out when it will be time to start pulling my hairs in frustration.

Fingers crossed for E3, because if not then... we're gonna be praying for a long while that a random Ninty Direct has news.

Aaaaaanyway...

I'm hoping we hear something about the game soon. Maybe Nintendo will give it a spot at E3.

The real problem with SMT representation in Smash is how the Persona characters have become the selected ATLUS ambassadors for every type of collaboration: Persona 5 Scramble would make much more sense if it was a Raidou game and Aleph/Flynn would be a better, more gimmicky rep for Megaten and ATLUS in general than Joker, but DS and SMT are less popular series so Persona gets all the cameos, dancing-fighting spin-offs and etc.

It is actually pretty sad looking back on the legacy and trajectory of Shin Megami Tensei in Nintendo consoles, but ATLUS has made clear that a future with a more mainstream-recognizable SMT is not the future that they want, even if the Persona collaborations they agree to develop look only like blatant advertisement.

Man, it's almost like P-Team is independent from SMT developers and doesn't ask for their opinion each time they want to make a spin-off or collaboration.

Anyway, I love Megami Tensei but there is a reason I never got into SMT fandom. Their victim complex regarding Persona is ridiculous. What's so weird about a more popular series getting more attention?

Actually, I'd be super down with that!

In fact, this thread was a general megaten thread before I changed the title to just focus on one character. ThatShadowLink ThatShadowLink wrote up a pretty cool moveset for him that you should check out. He has it linked on sourcegaming.com, but I also added it to the OP. He's in the "Demon Summoners->Movesets->Flynn" section.

I think he'd be a great choice. He's the most recent protagonist, SMT IV has a healthy fanbase and he can learn spells via demon whisper.

Not as visually unique as Demi-fiend, but we don't have a playable samurai yet. I support.

Honestly I didn't know that at all but I've seen the source gaming vid just bummed cuz I don't think he has a shot

Essentially this comic:

SMT magic.jpg

Flynn's design is really cool and I don't think it gets enough credit. It combines the flowyness of Eastern Samurai garb with the more sturdy Western Knight attire while also adding some signature cyberpunk elements. It's pretty rad.

Honestly I didn't know that at all but I've seen the source gaming vid just bummed cuz I don't think he has a shot
He honestly doesn't have a lot going for him, nor does most any other SMT character. I'd honestly peg another Persona 5 character as an echo as far more likely than us ever seeing SMT in Smash. Well, there's Jack Frost, but... he's definitely not as cool, lol.

Still though, we can dream:

Flynn is a rogue Samurai from the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. After embarking his own path, he decided to side with the people of Tokyo, and protect them from the demons and angels.

Flynn will probably be very similar to Robin in concept, in that he uses various magic spells to his advantage. Flynn has access to nearly every demon techniques in his game via the Demon Whisper mechanic, where demons who have unlocked all of their skills can pass them on to Flynn. The game only lets him carry 8 skills maximum, but for the sake of this moveset that will be ignored. Besides, when is Smash ever true to game limitations?

While Flynn carries a sword in its sheath in his artwork, he will not be using it for the majority of my moveset, instead it will stay sheathed while he walks around. Flynn has a Gauntlet on his arm which allows him to summon up to 3 demons as well, I will be staying true to this limitation. For added flair Flynn will be using this Gauntlet for all of his attacks involving demon skills and not his own.

MOVESET -

STANDARDS -
Neutral Attack – Godslayer Sword
Flynn slashes Masakado's Katana in a diagonal overhand arc, similar to his starting overworld attack in Shin Megami Tensei IV.
Dash Attack – Lunge
Flynn lunges forward, punching with his Gauntlet arm.

TILT ATTACKS -
Forward Tilt – Poison Claw
With a quick flick of the wrist, Flynn slashes his opponent with his Gaunlet hand in a claw. This will add a poison effect on his foe which will last for a few seconds.
Up Tilt – Tathlum Shot
Flynn holds his Gauntlet arm upward and it quickly shoots needles from each finger, mimicking machine gun fire.
Down Tilt – Oni-Kagura
Flynn smashes his opponent, performing a sweeping punch down with his Gauntlet arm.

SMASH ATTACKS -
Forward Smash – Nihil Claw
Flynn takes his Gauntlet hand into a claw and slashes at his foe with it, which can be chained three times with extra button presses.
Up Smash – Grand Tack
Flynn will launch a massive tack from his Gauntlet arm upward, which will hit anyone in its path. It quickly dissipates after getting a short distance away.
Down Smash – Berseker God
Flynn quickly does a one-two punch with his Gauntlet arm; one left, one right. It has a very short range, but on contact it is Flynn's most powerful attack.

AERIAL ATTACKS -
Neutral Aerial – Megidolaon
Flynn unleashes a burst of energy around him.
Forward Aerial – Agidyne
A blast of fire explodes from his Gauntlet as Flynn holds it in front of him.
Back Aerial – Zandyne
Flynn unleashes immense force behind him, which will propel him forward and anyone behind him away.
Up Aerial – Ziodyne
Flynn shoots a bolt of lightning above him.
Down Aerial – Bufudyne
Flynn launches an icicle beneath him, which quickly falls to the ground and shatters.

THROWS -
Grab – “This is a Samurai's Skill!”
Flynn pulls his enemy close to him, which he grips with his Gauntlet arm.
Pummel – Masakado's Fury
Flynn hits his opponent with the hilt of Masakado's Katana.
Forward Throw – Agilao
Flynn throws him opponent forward and throws a fireball at them.
Back Throw – Zanma
Flynn throws his opponent behind with great force, pushing them away.
Up Throw – Zionga
Flynn electrocutes his foe with his Gauntlet arm and throws them upward.
Down Throw – Bufula
Flynn throws his enemy against the ground, hitting them with a strong ice attack, and they launch away, frozen.

GET-UP ATTACKS -
Floor Attack – Hama
Flynn lets out a blinding light from his Gauntlet which gives him the chance to return to his feet.
Edge Attack – Mudo
Flynn unleashes a void of darkness from his Gauntlet upon climbing back up from the ledge.

SPECIALS -
Neutral Special – Smile Charge
Flynn will charge up and acquire Smirk status. The charging animation leaves Flynn vulnerable, and it takes two seconds to activate. This will strengthen his next attack, depending on the strength of said attack. If used with a Smash attack, the benefit will be minimal, but with any other move, it will essentially double the damage output.

Side Special – Jack Frost
Flynn summons Jack Frost, which will perform Bufula. Bufula is a medium sized ice projectile. It will hit any enemy it collides with, in a short, straight launch.

Up Special – Pyro Jack
Flynn summons Pyro Jack, who, because he floats, will carry him up for a short time.

Down Special – Jack Skelton*
Flynn summons Jack Skelton, who will use Tetanus Cut. Flynn and Jack will attack both sides with a quick slash, Flynn left and Jack right.

FINAL SMASH – Jack Bros
Flynn will trap anyone near him in a battle arena. Then, in a short cutscene, he summons all three Jacks who unleash attacks in succession. Bufula, Agilao, Tetanus Cut, and then finally Flynn finishes with Antichthon, a severe Almighty attack that will send the opponent flying.

*I don't think Nintendo would want to bring light to that fact that this Jack is based on a notorious serial murderer, so instead I've opted to use the name he went by in his Jack Bros appearance.
Final Smash: Jack Bros: Using his Gauntlet to launch a VR program, Flynn will trap anyone near him in a virtual battle arena. Then, in a short cutscene, he summons all three Jacks who unleash attacks in succession. Bufula, Agilao, Tetanus Cut, and then finally Flynn finishes with Antichthon, a severe Almighty attack that will send his opponent(s) flying.

Idle Animation: Menu Check. Aleph checks his comp for data. Similar to what Idon Idon Idon Idon purposed for Kazuya.
Taunt #1: "Dancing Furiously!" Aleph breaks out into a dance. A referance to an event, and meme, from SMT II.
Tanut #2: Aleph simply spins one of his pistols around in his hand.
Tanun #3: Intimidate. Aleph summons one of his summon-able demons to intimidate the enemy.
