Why would that be a bad thing? Surely representing Sonic's most beloved and iconic games would be a good thing for a celebration of gaming?

No. This entire decade, Sega has been on a Classic hype train. Great for you, bad for just about everyone else. So much hype, they've forgotten how to make good Modern games without nostalgia pandering-and as Forces proves, sometimes even that doesn't work. Classic in Smash would just cement the possibility that Sega just doesn't care what half-no, more than half-of what the fans want.
Plus, he's still Sonic, just a different design. Who we already have in Smash. It would be much better to represent one of the many other beloved characters in the series.
