I think Goomba would've been a smarter addition than Piranha Plant. There'd be the same "are we really doing this?" reaction, but he also wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb in the long run and still feel like a fitting "gaming all-star".

Goomba was already taken for Super Mario Party, so I can guess that the game of the long straw was played for the selection process of armless playable enemies in Mario-related games that year.
