Steve has a mining equipment so I’ve heard thoughts that this was rework was to assign different materials that Steve can mine on each stage.

Steve appears to have a crafting mechanic, where they can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade their weapons by planting a Crafting Table.
Available weapons and equipment include Swords, Fishing Rods, Axes, Pickaxes, Lava Buckets (seemingly as a down smash), and Flint & Steel. Weapons can be made of Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond.
