I'd love to see a Sprite based Pokemon Game again.

If we're talking about Sword and Shield itself then yes, but talking about future installments then that really dosen't seem true. Assets can quite easly be reused, and games like Sun and Moon have come out on time, with a development time on the shorter side.
Sure the new game probably wouldn't be very good given the state of Gamefreak, but its still national dex. It absolutely could happen

I should note I'm not just talking about a National Dex here, but a National Dex including variants (Megas, Galarian, Alolan, Gigantamax e.t.c.), new Pokemon and a relatively good balance for competitive play. (not a perfect balance per say, because that'd be impossible even in Gen 1)
