Probably because SMG4 uses Steve in his SM64 meme videos and SMG4 get's million of views on his videos.

Waluigi and Sans are in SMG4's videos too. But nether Steve, Waluigi, or Sans are main cast characters of the show. But they all pop up quite often in his videos.

I don't think that's connected... in the slightest. I don't think there's that much overlap between "Smash newcomer speculators" and "people who find the "get in my belly" soundclip funny" - and plus if people were using random YouTubers as a basis for what is and isn't a "meme pick" Bowser Jr. would've been considered a "meme pick" before 3DS/Wii U thanks to SuperMarioLogan.
