Aside from maybe the first Minions they have never made anything nearly as bad as the Lorax so that is something.

There are a lot of reasons to believe the mario movie would be really good and despicable me is still a genuinely very good film, and Nintendo clearly has a lot of control over it. I don't think it's fair to say it being "decent" was inevitable. That said, I feel like some people thought it was gonna be a really good, **** in boots 2 style animated movie given how animated movies (and especially non-Disney ones) are on a rise now and I think its silly to think like that.
