I feel you should take from the source material, but not be faithful to it if that makes sense. You want to design a kit that can fit in the powers and personality that character is known for, but more specific things like game mechanics or a specific fighting style should be deprioritised if not outright avoided, and original concepts or animations should be emphasised when possible.
